Home security system? I have a system where I can log in and talk to people at the door, to find out if I need to go to the door immediately or not. I also have the garage door and the front door set up to open with my phone or with a raised button number combo. Bump dots on the remote controls is nice too. Having the smart TV have the screen reader enabled is a must. Tactile lock for the shed door. Door mats at the entryways help to find the doors. Floor mats on in front of the sinks and stove help to find those places fast and easy. Curtains/ drapes/ area rugs/ paintings and wall decorations help to limit echos and manage sound in the house. Microsoft soundscape pin drop on the dock to mark the house location from the water.
As far as the TV, speaking for myself, I love the screen reading technology. I have at the moment a Samsung 50 inch TV. But, I love the screen reader telling me menu options, as well as channels, even things that is playing on television. I also believe, that the Amazon, fire stick, will do the same thing! 21:39

It's ALLLL about the light! for us Too bright, too dark to leave me a seat with my back to window, wrong place etc. I always try to sit with the light at my back and my family is well trained 😅. Our nemesis is flat screen.s UGH! Bump dots to the rescue. Only I use puff paint instead. I can make those any size and shape. LED lights are our best friend! I never go out without my little ultra bright flash light. Helps me find things in the pantry and the eggs in the chicken coop nests.
Hi sam, I am legally blind as well and have thrown Alexa everywhere! She controls my house completely. One of the best things ever is the control of the air conditioning. My wife can no longer keep it on a high temperature. It is the greatest freedom of cooling

As usual, you did a great job. I just have one minor comment. When talking TVs, monitors, etc, bigger is not always better, if you have narrow fields, like from RP. Love your TV chair though! A light source that I've used for years is a tall free standing light where you don't see the light source at all and the light is directed toward the ceiling. I love this light because it lights up the whole room without blinding me with the bright bulb. Maybe that kind of light will be useful to someone as well. I appreciate all your great video's and idea's.
Great video again. I have been dreaming abou a robot vacuum for a while now. For your pepper and paprika containers: you can have a rubber band around one of them to distinguish between the two. Rubber bands are great in the bathroom to know which one is a shampoo and which one is shower gel etc.
Such a simple thing but I’m like, BAM! Thanks so much! I have used a sharpie to mark my bath products with huge letter S for shampoo etc but rubber bands would be lots better. Definitely worth a try!
My husband actually put our couches on wheels and has the tv at an eye level in the living room so I can get as close as I want. I just found your channel and I’m really stoked. Oh yeah, TV chair is key! My VI sweet spot, at least for gaming, is at least a 43 inch TV, probably 55 is the biggest I'll go because sometimes things are just TOO big for gaming and I'm hopping up and down to view/read corners of the screen. I am all right on 27 or 32 inches too, but prefer 43-ish overall. However, if TV watching is all you do, I can definitely see the advantage to bigger is better. In any case, my TV has gaming chairs in front of it with adjustable height, one for me, one for my sighted niece.

I use and love motion lights and have them in my pantry, in the hallway and by my linen closet. For watching tv, I use screen reading settings since I can't read the screen from the sofa, and depend on audio description to help with what I don't see well. We keep everything's organized. In my kitchen, my pull down spice rack is a lifesaver along with bump dots. Great video. Love all the home automation tips.
Great video Sam. Important to keep floors uncluttered and clean as you said. I like some of the lighting products. You can save a lot of people money if you tell them they can just use illumination strips instead of expensive under cabinet lighting.. I am glad to see your family is so understandign of this.
This was a very informative video and has helped give me some ideas for my home never thought of using motion lights inside the house but I do have several outside definitely gonna get some for inside now.
Sam, another useful video from you. In my dem/office where I have a TV I also have a good egonomic office chair that's easy to move to any dististance from the TV that I need which I find useful.
My husband has installed motion light switches in the kitchen, living room and bathrooms. Our bedrooms and family room have lights I can turn on and off with my phone (we haven't gotten a echo cause my husband isn't thrilled about it always recording etc). Our bedroom light also turns on at a specific time in the morning. I've only been legally blind a short while and definitely still learning a lot.
Believe it or not I like an extremely small screen, when I watch a 70 inch like in my living room for some reason I can’t get the whole picture in or keep up with it, but when I use like a 13 inch screen I can see everything perfectly, well as perfect as someone with retinitis pigmentosa can
As always Sam your videos are very instructive. You probably get this question 1000 times but you have a lot experience with both, which is better for a very low vision android or iPhone. Thanks in advance
LOL, I’ve gotten that question so many times that I’ve probably made six or seven videos on that very topic! My opinion is that if someone is low vision and still relies mostly on large print and magnification, then android is a better option because of its customizable features. I also think it has a better screen magnifier. But, if someone is profoundly visually impaired and going to be relying mostly on a screen reader, the iPhone is the way to go because voiceover is still the superior screen reader that’s the quick version, if you would like more detail, I recommend checking out my dedicated videos on that topic.
Great video Sam. I could share so many ideas on accessible tech. I’ve gone with adaptive lighting with my motion sensors in the kitchen so that when it’s bright enough outside, the Iights don’t come on. I’ve adjusted the light temperature in most rooms to find my sweet spot too. I have echo devices all over the house with routines set & even use them for making lists. I have so many gadgets in the kitchen. I just got a talking microwave oven and my talking kitchen scales and temperature probe get used a lot. With all of that said, you can’t beat a bump on for simplicity. I’ve got them dotted everywhere.
Have you thought of getting a projector and projector screen? It’s totally changed my TV watching experience as a VIP. We keep it really dark with black out curtains unless I need light for something in the living room

Hi Melissa, I am in the same boat. I lost my left eye when I was 13 from a pellet gun and now at 50 I have a bright spot in my field fo vision. No diagnosis yet and not seeing a specialist for 2 weeks. I had a major panic attack yesterday. Going blind is the scariest thing for me. With the help of channels like Sam's, we can transition a little easier. Still not going to be easy but we can do it. Stay safe and keep your head up.
There are resources that have people come to your home and help you get acclimated in your home. Your eye dr probably knows them. You get a resource advocate. She came to my home, accessed the things I needed help with, and she put the dots on my appliances. Please look into that. Hope that helps.
Yes, it’s definitely scary, in fact, many people say it’s the scariest thing that can happen to someone. But I know you can do it, I’m confident you will be able to handle it. Definitely take the advice given here and I would also recommend getting connected with some support organizations. There are also lots of helpful groups on Facebook that can also add some emotional support.
Hi Melissa, give yourself time and take things step by step. Perhaps prioritize things that are most important to you for example if you love cooking start with making your kitchen more accessible, or if reading for pleasure is important look into audiobooks being read by Amazon Echo etc.All the best to you🧡

@@theblindlife I have a question Sam. What if we are completely blind, should we still have some lights on while someone is asleep? I can see little light, but most of the time I forget to turn on the lights just to make sure someone knows I'm in the bathroom or tthing. And I really don't think about it, since I'm so used to the dark.
That’s a great question and I don’t think there is necessarily a right or wrong answer. I would assume that anyone walking around in your house already knows about your vision impairment and would understand if you didn’t have the lights on. I would think that they would just take it upon themselves to turn the lights on if they needed them. That being said, I could see how it would be a bit of a surprise if they walked into a dark bathroom and you were sitting on the toilet, LOL!
Sam, one comment I have for you is sitting too close to the TV can cause further blindness, if you are blind or it makes no sense to actually sit that close to a TV in general for us blind people try using audio described things like audio description on your t.v that way you won’t have any worries about trying to look at a TV screen
You dont know how many times i have tripped over shoes that are left by the door. Its sooooo annoying. I even fallen a couple times cuz of shoes. The cabinet lighting would help me out a lot. There are so many shadows in my kitchen and having lighting over the stove would be amazing.

Hey Sam Great video as usual. In the video you mentioned smart outlets. Is there any that you recommend? Ones that are easy to use/install using voiceover/talkback? My dad got some for Christmas and they weren’t accessible for him to set them up using his talkback. Also maybe you could do a video on setting up smart devices like that using a screen reader device.
That’s a great idea! You’re right, the smart plugs and smart bulbs seem to be all over the board as far as how difficult they are to set up. I don’t have any to recommend right now but we just got some new ones in at work so this might be the perfect time to compare them.
@@theblindlife I learn a lots for your videos! Yesterday I downloaded the zoom app you recommended and it is so good! I also installed a big clock on my phone that cab show the battery aswell. I also discovered that in the latest update from Samsung you can activate the speaking keyboard that reads the letters on the keyboard without the full blown screen reader. I am a big Samsung fan. In my opinion Samsung is androids bstter version of iPhone. They have the same things but Samsung is working best for me with the contrast and colour. I also have a Samsung tab and it works amazing with my phone. I can have the exact layout and settings on my tab and that is not really possible with apple.
A bigger TV is really bad if you have glaucoma like me 😂 I own a TV but I actually never use it, because it is just too big. My field of vision is so narrow, that I need a screen as small as a smartphone to be able to see something full screen. If I watch TV, I only can see a very small section of the screen, which is really bad if I want to play a video game where you have to see the whole screen at once. If I want to watch a movie, I need to use my smartphone or tablet if I want to see what is happening.
Where do you get these rubber bumpers stick on Amazon has them I don't know what to look for want quantities some were only a few in a pack I need them all over the house thank you so much in bless you
You can search for bump dots on Amazon to find an assortment of sizes and colors. You can also look for rubber drawer or cabinet door stops and if you get the small ones, they will work also. You can usually find them in large quantities to.
Having a flashlight in the living room to get your attention when you have headphones on. Deaf people use flashing lights on telephones and door bells. Similar idea.
I am going to correct you, as far as the TV goes, bigger is not always better. I only have somewhere around the neighborhood of a 5° visual field, if you have a huge TV, you cut off even more of what I can see. I don’t literally watch TV, because that is pointless, I listen to it. You can learn just as much by using audio description and dialogue.
I have discovered that if I get up at 4 am, I have an hour and a half when I can see better. As soon as the sun comes up, my sight is very limited. Are you able to participate in the chats during live broadcasts on UA-cam with a screen reader? Thank you!!!!
I know what you mean, the room that has my computer in it gets flooded with sunlight around 10 AM and it’s impossible to do any work in there! Yes, you should be able to use a screen reader with the lifestream chats no problem
What type of things do you have on the outside of your home for accessibility? "Convenience doesn't equal Accessibility, Accessibility equals Convenience". I personally hate the word convenient. The reason I do hate that word is that there are people who think that PWD is only looking for convenience as if we are lazy? I know that is not true. I am legally blind and I use a power chair. There are people who can use the stairs but they love to use the elevator but that elevator is my only way to get around?
I'm curious about something. I thought you had an irisvision headset. If so, why do you sit close to your tv. If you don't have it, why not? I'm just curious. I've been thinking about trying to get one, but can't seem to find anyone that uses it consistently. Please reply to this question as I feel like it would help me. I stopped trying to watch tv about a year ago.
Yes, I have an Iris vision as well as some of the other wearable devices. None of them work well for me for watching television. The problem is that for me to see the TV, I need to be zoomed in so far that I’m only seeing a small section of the television screen. This makes it difficult to watch TV when I need to constantly scan around the TV screen. It’s just like when you use magnification on a computer. You need to zoom in big enough to see the words but when you do that, you’re only looking at one word at a time. This is why it just works better for me to simply sit closer to the TV. That way I can see everything normally.
@@theblindlife That you for that. For me to see our big screen TV, I also need to sit right on top of it, but don't get the full picture because I have to be so close. I gave up on tv about a year ago. It's audio books for me now.

I don’t use one myself because I don’t think it would help me personally. However, I’ve made a couple videos about using a projector.

There are resources that have people come to your home and help you get acclimated in your home. Your eye dr probably knows them. You get a resource advocate. She came to my home, accessed the things I needed help with, and she put the dots on my appliances. Please look into that. Hope that helps.
Yes, it’s definitely scary, in fact, many people say it’s the scariest thing that can happen to someone. But I know you can do it, I’m confident you will be able to handle it. Definitely take the advice given here and I would also recommend getting connected with some support organizations. There are also lots of helpful groups on Facebook that can also add some emotional support.
Hi Melissa, give yourself time and take things step by step. Perhaps prioritize things that are most important to you for example if you love cooking start with making your kitchen more accessible, or if reading for pleasure is important look into audiobooks being read by Amazon Echo etc.All the best to you🧡

@@theblindlife I have a question Sam. What if we are completely blind, should we still have some lights on while someone is asleep? I can see little light, but most of the time I forget to turn on the lights just to make sure someone knows I'm in the bathroom or tthing. And I really don't think about it, since I'm so used to the dark.
That’s a great question and I don’t think there is necessarily a right or wrong answer. I would assume that anyone walking around in your house already knows about your vision impairment and would understand if you didn’t have the lights on. I would think that they would just take it upon themselves to turn the lights on if they needed them. That being said, I could see how it would be a bit of a surprise if they walked into a dark bathroom and you were sitting on the toilet, LOL!

Sam, one comment I have for you is sitting too close to the TV can cause further blindness, if you are blind or it makes no sense to actually sit that close to a TV in general for us blind people try using audio described things like audio description on your t.v that way you won’t have any worries about trying to look at a TV screen
The chair by the TV looks like it's from the 70's.
You dont know how many times i have tripped over shoes that are left by the door. Its sooooo annoying. I even fallen a couple times cuz of shoes. The cabinet lighting would help me out a lot. There are so many shadows in my kitchen and having lighting over the stove would be amazing.
So frustrating, I know!

Great video as usual. In the video you mentioned smart outlets. Is there any that you recommend? Ones that are easy to use/install using voiceover/talkback? My dad got some for Christmas and they weren’t accessible for him to set them up using his talkback. Also maybe you could do a video on setting up smart devices like that using a screen reader device.
That’s a great idea! You’re right, the smart plugs and smart bulbs seem to be all over the board as far as how difficult they are to set up. I don’t have any to recommend right now but we just got some new ones in at work so this might be the perfect time to compare them.

@@theblindlife I learn a lots for your videos! Yesterday I downloaded the zoom app you recommended and it is so good! I also installed a big clock on my phone that cab show the battery aswell. I also discovered that in the latest update from Samsung you can activate the speaking keyboard that reads the letters on the keyboard without the full blown screen reader. I am a big Samsung fan. In my opinion Samsung is androids bstter version of iPhone. They have the same things but Samsung is working best for me with the contrast and colour. I also have a Samsung tab and it works amazing with my phone. I can have the exact layout and settings on my tab and that is not really possible with apple.
A bigger TV is really bad if you have glaucoma like me 😂 I own a TV but I actually never use it, because it is just too big. My field of vision is so narrow, that I need a screen as small as a smartphone to be able to see something full screen. If I watch TV, I only can see a very small section of the screen, which is really bad if I want to play a video game where you have to see the whole screen at once. If I want to watch a movie, I need to use my smartphone or tablet if I want to see what is happening.

you can get them from lsands or maxie aids
You can search for bump dots on Amazon to find an assortment of sizes and colors. You can also look for rubber drawer or cabinet door stops and if you get the small ones, they will work also. You can usually find them in large quantities to.

I am going to correct you, as far as the TV goes, bigger is not always better. I only have somewhere around the neighborhood of a 5° visual field, if you have a huge TV, you cut off even more of what I can see. I don’t literally watch TV, because that is pointless, I listen to it. You can learn just as much by using audio description and dialogue.

I know what you mean, the room that has my computer in it gets flooded with sunlight around 10 AM and it’s impossible to do any work in there! Yes, you should be able to use a screen reader with the lifestream chats no problem

What type of things do you have on the outside of your home for accessibility? "Convenience doesn't equal Accessibility, Accessibility equals Convenience". I personally hate the word convenient. The reason I do hate that word is that there are people who think that PWD is only looking for convenience as if we are lazy? I know that is not true. I am legally blind and I use a power chair. There are people who can use the stairs but they love to use the elevator but that elevator is my only way to get around?

I'm curious about something. I thought you had an irisvision headset. If so, why do you sit close to your tv. If you don't have it, why not? I'm just curious. I've been thinking about trying to get one, but can't seem to find anyone that uses it consistently. Please reply to this question as I feel like it would help me. I stopped trying to watch tv about a year ago.
Yes, I have an Iris vision as well as some of the other wearable devices. None of them work well for me for watching television. The problem is that for me to see the TV, I need to be zoomed in so far that I’m only seeing a small section of the television screen. This makes it difficult to watch TV when I need to constantly scan around the TV screen. It’s just like when you use magnification on a computer. You need to zoom in big enough to see the words but when you do that, you’re only looking at one word at a time. This is why it just works better for me to simply sit closer to the TV. That way I can see everything normally.
@@theblindlife That you for that. For me to see our big screen TV, I also need to sit right on top of it, but don't get the full picture because I have to be so close. I gave up on tv about a year ago. It's audio books for me now.
I use my Iris Vision to watch TV, have you tried doing that on the TV setting?
Yes, it doesn’t work well for me. For me, I need to zoom in so close that I’m not looking at the whole screen which means I need to move it around. Just not very practical. Sitting in my chair up close works better for me. Definitely glad it works for you though!
