      For the price of $1,500 I wish it wouldn’t be so plasticky and cheap looking and feeling. It would have been nice if it was a nice premium metal feel like an iPhone considering the device costs as much and more than a premium phone but this does a whole lot less which makes me feel their price is taking advantage of the blind community who really need something like this.

      If you never seem to finish a book. Maybe reading isn’t your thing and you shouldn’t spend so much money on such a device. Like you say audio books are expensive, ok but they ain’t on the level of this product, that’s for sure. Let’s say the average price for an audiobook is £10 (dunno what currency you use but I cba to convert things, the same principles apply), and that’s being pretty generous - plus on stuff like audible there is subscription services and frequent sales. An orcam read smart costs like £2200 here in the UK, and that’s not even accounting for the costs of physical books you have to purchase. For that price you can buy like 220 audio books, enough to cover you for over 4 years if you’re committed to that one book a week thing. Plus you don’t have that laborious process of scanning every single page and it being read to you in a monotone voice - audiobooks can give you proper voice acting. Like seriously for the purpose you described this product is not worth it for that price, great for visually impaired people but for struggling leisure readers like yourself - audiobooks are a far better and affordable medium.

    I am so fortunate that I just so happen to find this online. I suffered a near fatal car accident in 1994 when I was in college. It took me almost 2 decades to finish my bachelors degree but I did! Something like this device will be PERFECT for me once I can afford $72.46 a month For two years, which I will begin in September, 2021. I am currently watching this video at 3:40 5 AM because we do not have as many students taking classes during the summer. This allows me to have a lot more free time to stay up till almost 4 AM, but I am so happy that I found this; I can read but reading anything longer than a menu (and I still have trouble reading a menu)- still remains tough for me with the closed head injury TBI of 1994.🤠🤠🤠

    Nice! I hadn't realised the OR Cam Read cost so much less than the OR Cam that affixes to glasses. I do love the time feature it has, though, and how it is hands-free aside from having a free hand to point at the tings you want it to read. I'm still getting used to incorporating the OR Cam into my routine, but I'm so glad this company exists and is making more accessibility devices so it will hopefully be around for many more years to come!

It looks so beautiful and I could hear a train horn in the background. I've just kind of curious. I've been there a million times and where you're at. I don't have a clue. The last place I was was Somerset Kentucky and so that was why I was just curious. That's all well. But this product will be a interesting reversal I think he did not point it out a computer screen and have it read. He also did not convey if the camera function saves the pictures... apps.apple.com/gb/app/seeing-ai/id999062298
      And Supersense is one that you pay for £5 a month, £50 for a year, or £100 for a lifetime. The demo I saw for this seemed to work well. I’m considering getting a lifetime subscription
      apps.apple.com/gb/app/supersense-ai-for-blind/id1484547836
      I just think the Orcam is more discrete especially if you are wearing it on your sunglasses. And you don’t always want to be waving your phone in the air.
      Also an app that works pretty well for catching buses and trains is Moovit. It works really well so long as the bus has its tracker switched on. It’s a case of sit back until it sends a message to get ready to get off.

      Zoe Gascoigne Seeing AI has improved since I first downloaded just after it first came out. It used to be mostly gibberish, now it’s occasionally gibberish mostly pretty good. It doesn’t like mixed font styles (which is where the Orcam also slipped up on this video). I regularly pop in my App Store and have a look to see what else is available, simply because I have had apps crash or suddenly decide to update in the middle of using them so I like to have others ready to use. I think my worst trip out was one where as I went to catch the bus home all 3 of my travel apps decided to update at the same time (Moovit, Soundscape, and Lazarillo). I was so glad it was a familiar route and there were a few people at the bus stop to help me catch the correct bus... one person offered to miss his bus to wait for mine. People can be really nice

      Thank you so much, it’s my pleasure! For me personally and what I would be using it for, the read would be better than the glasses. You’re absolutely right though, hands-free with the glasses is great. For me, having it in a pocket and simply pulling it out and using it real quick is more appealing. Snap a quick picture and then put it away again. Once again though, that’s just how I would use it.

Insurance pays for diabetes equipment, canes, etc. in the field of low vision and blindness we have limited assistance in purchasing these items. Some states purchase them and some do not. Though it sounds as if it is very smart. I have poor vision, for seeing text or small type. I can see to drive and walk around. I use a magnifying glass or squint in some cases. Great, comprehensive video, Sam. We seem to see similarly. The biggest question I have about something like this is what advantages does this (and other devices for that matter) have over a decent Iphone with Something like Envision AI? (I pick that example because between it and Voice dream scanner seem to be the best OCR apps I've come across. Don't get me wrong, it's fast, the smart reading is actually really cool and I love that it's offline. And that lazer pointer idea is super cool. Another couple questions. First, how precise do you need to be with that pointer? Do you need to go line by line or is it just in the general vacinity of the paragraph? And finally have you tried this to read screens? It seems like apps are getting better at that. I play video games and while I CAN read text, it's a lot of extra work and very slow. So being able to point it at a block of text and take a snapshot would be amazing. Not that I can aford this thing, but it's good info.

    • @OrCam
      @OrCam 4 роки тому +1

      The benefit of OrCam Read is that (unlike with other solutions in the market) you don't have to go line by line to read a specific paragraph. You can just place the pointer at some point within the paragraph, and OrCam Read will read it to you from the beginning of the paragraph.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 роки тому +2

      I would also add that the benefit is convenience and accuracy. I didn’t show it in the video because of time but I compared it to using an application on a phone and the whole process was much faster and more accurate. That may be a follow up video idea. Yes, I did test it on a computer screen and it worked perfectly. One night I was talking with my wife while she was doing some banking on her computer. I leaned over and snapped a quick picture with the Read. It started reading out all the banking information without any problems. Also, there’s no worry in that situation because the information is off-line. So no chance of banking information getting sent out to the Internet somewhere.

      The Blind Life Thank you for the reply. That does indeed sound good. I notice at least with Envision AI the retrieval time especially with quick text is pretty fast. Though Orcam also seems quite quick. I do like many of the features of the read. You have only scratched the surface of possible uses. Combine that with Google Translate and you just taught someone to speak English. For someone who never learned to read, now they can. Every library should have an OrCam room, nursing homes , too. Bible study would be more open. Menus ? Prisoner reform programs ? Contracts and mortgages ? And on & on.

    This looks great, thank you! The only feature it needs is speech feedback when the user is changing operational modes. Is there a reliable method for orienting yourself to the mode of operation without sight? Also, can this read digital displays like clocks and radios? Can it read projector screens?

      It does have voice controls that you can use to change a lot of settings. Not sure if there is a voice command to switch between the modes, there probably is. Yes, it can read digital screens. In fact, I was messing around one night talking to my wife while she was on her computer and I quickly reached over and snapped a picture of her screen. The thing started to read out all of our banking information!

      fart dad this video has an in-depth look at the my eye apparently the only difference between it and the read are the extra functions like facial recognition it may hold the answers you need especially on using it by speaking to it and orientation of the camera

      The Blind Life do you know if OrCam sells a protective case for it? Unlikely I’ll have that kind of money any time soon but with little kids around that device will draw lots of interest.

    Brilliant review, thank you. You have a new subscriber!
    One question - how does it deal with columns of writing on the same page, such as a TV Guide, or newspaper columns? Does it read the whole page, left to right, or does it stay within columns?

      It handles them pretty well. In fact, in my other OrCam video, I demonstrate by reading some menus.

      It’s really going to depend on your goals and what extra features you want. They will both do the OCR text to speech so that is canceled out. One is hands-free that sits on a pair of glasses while the other one you will need to hold in point. Also, the my eye has extra features like money identification, barcode scanning, facial recognition. It’s also more expensive. All of these things need to be considered.

    Wow. That is an impressive tool. Thanks for a great, comprehensive review. One question - does it store information which then has to be manually deleted or does it automatically clear the info after reading it? Thanks. While this is probably out of my price range, it’s good to know about. Like you, if I can magnify something or get it up close to my face I can usually read it but anything up high or down low can be a bear. I usually try to take a picture with my phone. But with its small size, I can see how super handy something like this would be.

    I'm interested to know if it will read very small print, such as washing instructions on clothing or food ingredient labels. Is it multi lingual?

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  4 роки тому +1

      Not sure about the language, I should have gotten that information. I do know that the device is available in several different languages. Are used it to scan the back of several types of products and it worked great on everyone. One of the products was a container of superglue which probably had very tiny writing.
