That is so unfair that you guys talked about 3D Marios without me! Just kidding, I actually I loved all your points. My only defensive comment is that Super Mario 3D World is so high on my list *because* I also pair that with Bowser's Fury as being the "same game" since they are bundled together on Switch. I love that it's a mix of 2D and 3D Mario games.
18:02 Regarding the TSA and batteries… I regularly fly for work and I always fly with 3 large battery banks with 70wh each. Plus my steam deck, 2-3 other small handhelds, laptop with a 50wh battery, phone, 2 iPads, and other miscellaneous devices. I have never been stopped or questioned.
I heard what was said about the usb c portable monitors and just want to explain my use case. I am an HVAC detailer, and sometimes i work on a laptop on the field. Having a portable monitor with my laptop is almost required as the software I use demands a second screen. As i listened to this podcast episode, I am sitting in the mechanical penthouse of a hospital utilizing the Asus Zenscreen and absolutely love it for productivity. Love the show guys.
I'm not saying they are bad, they just aren't something I have a use for most of the time. That said when I had my old layout here in the Studio, I kept a portable monitor on the shelf just to have some gameplay behind me.

If they get better, then that will help handhelds out with DLSS and FSR. Better performance and graphics for less processing power, less battery use, and less heat. All of which are important for handhelds. AI will be necessary, there's only so much more power we can get out of these chips without getting out of control thermals and your devices burn your hands or destroy themselves with the heat.
I think that we'll see more A.I every year until we get sentient cyborgs. There's no stopping it at this point, and hobestly it'll nost likely help improve performance, battery life and processing management as it evolves. I could be completely wrong though! @@seeibe
It's just like anything else that gets added to a CPU, MMX, 3DNow!, etc.... What matters is how it's leveraged. I think it would be pretty neat to have an AI second player for multi-player games that don't already have one, especially classics. I think it would be killer to see it for emulators. That's pie-in-the-sky right now, but not impossible.
Phawx going in on Mario Odyssey while giving Starfield the time of day. The movement in SMO is incredible. The Moons make it more accessible than SM64 because a lower still player can get through the game on easy moons and buying moons while a skilled player can find the challenge they want. They even design moons where you can avoid Cappy transformations and used high skill platforming instead. The cap jump combos are so damn good. It definitely comes down to SM64 and SMO for the top Mario game. If we are talking about the original SM64 and not the PC port I would have SMO as the best. With the improvements the PC port brings to SM64 I would probably have that as my favorite for the reasons Bob articulated. So easy to jump into.
Great show again, and nice to see Cary and Bob back. Question for you and the guys that you might be able to answer. Can you add tags to a game in your steam library on the Steam Deck that you can see when you select a game? I'm hoping to use it as a way to manage games installed on MicroSD cards. I currently can't upgrade my SSD, but I have a few large capacity MicroSD cards. If I were to label each of these with a number, then install games to them in turn, I was hoping I could add a tag with the relevant SD card number that it was installed on. Then when I want to play a game from my library that's not installed on the internal SSD or SDcard that is currently in the Steam Deck, I could see the tag which tells me which SDcard to fit back in the deck to play. Any ideas appreciated. Looking forward to next week's show
Flowstone Saga is a loose sequel to Tangledeep which is a mystery dungeon indie game that I also wanna mention! Really cool game, great music. We don't get enough mystery dungeon games anymore. I don't know if you have seen the Super Blood Hockey/Terror of Hemasaurus developer situation (they where scammed by their publisher) Maybe something to talk about in a future episode cause that whole situation is really sad :(
BTW Phawx, in the AMD Q&A their guy says that the Z2E will have direct driver support from AMD instead of per OEM request of Z1/Z1E, presumably to get boutique OEMs aboard the Z train. They also talked about AI-enabled features on it (offloading upscaling to the the NPU maybe?), so the NPU may not be disabled, which makes one wonder how it's different from the 370 HX.
If that's the case it seems like we can expect a pretty sizable jump in performance. 370 is already a big leap from 780m. I'm amazed how much more energy efficient the 370 is. 20w for 60 fps in Hogwarts Legacy is pretty top tier.
@@JamieR AMD just released a Radeon Software update enabling a test version of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2. According to the specs, AFMF2 is an AI-based frame generation feature that works with Radeon graphics cards and Ryzen AI series APUs. All the AI talk at the Z2 Extreme Q&A aside, seeing as how AFMF2 may very well be the first ever actually useful thing ever created in the entire hype history of NPUs, I just can't see how AMD can possibly disable NPUs in the Z2 Extreme now.
I cant stand when people say the CPU on the z1 is overpowered. Some of us need that cpu grunt, and it would be a huge step back for handhelds if they went back on it. The difference between the steam deck and z1 in cpu heavy games is night and day. MMO gamers rise up
They didn't say that Z2 extreme would give you crazy battery life on the high end, they said they are targeting controls to be able to frame limit AFMF to something like 30 fps to achieve better battery life. (So a frame limiter that works with frame gen). We create the narrative that the new processor will somehow have 3x the battery life without compromise we will be very disappointed when it releases and does not achieve that.
Here's hoping AMD or Intel make a really good low watt APU with actual on chip VRAM, this alone would offer double the performance, an internal FPGA for hardware subfield rendering would be amazing too.
There is a way to run mesa drivers with Windows. There were some works to allow that, so in the future Valve and others might just provide the same drivers for both systems
That's funny, I'm playing Castlevania Dominus Collection while watching this, lol..I'm stuck on a couple of bosses on Wukong, and desperately had to switch up games
I hope Valve just throws down the gauntlet with the SteamDeck2, and sticks a 100wh battery in it. Then anyone that wants to beat it at battery life, has to reduce their power load, or make their system more efficient, or give up on their handheld being FAA legal. Also, i think the biggest way to improve battery life on handhelds right now, would be to make a handheld without a screen, and ship it with Xreal, or Virture AR glasses. Then you have no more screen replacement needs, there's more space and weight allowance for a bigger battery, and better cooling. I actually think that's an entirely untapped segment of the market. A handheld with no battery or screen, and is clocked to the moon, with really good cooling, that you either plug into the wall or a battery bank, and use AR glasses.
Sheot maximizing value would be to not leave your money dormant on PlayStation from 15 years ago lol. Inflation! But a dedicated PlayStation fan for sure ❤
I think the Z2 comment is simply Strix 370 can play at 15W what Z1E would do at 30W (double) and the battery in Ally X is double (as a typical new platform. So it’s 45mins x 2 x 2 = 3 hours. He’s talking about a typical Z1 device (ally) vs a Z2 (ally 2 with battery from the X). That’s my hunch anyway…
Bill, have played Moss yet? It's basically the hypothetical Astrobot psvr game you were talking about. Just with a different main character and a bit more story to it.
@@NerdNest fair enough! I don't actually own a Playstation, so I have not played Astrobot, but I do think Moss is both a masterpiece and the closest thing there is to more VR Astrobot. But I guess it's not for everyone...
Is NMS a bit like Terraria or Core Keeper? Where you just got to explore to keep progressing? I got stuck early on back when it released and fell off. Every time I come back I stop before progressing, because I don't know if there's an actual game in there.
@JamieR Yeah it really does lack game in single player IMO. Not a bad game, but just feels incomplete. And I'm the kind of person who enjoys Dwarf Fortress lol
I liked Starfield. Wish I waited for the rover update but it was a solid game with good characters. I think CP2077 is better but would say both games are extremely underrated.
Great show guys, miss Russ because he's the contrarian uncle who knows more about retro games and has no problem correcting you. When you started talking Mario64 I wanted him to correct you all.

Saw a video of AMD 370 AI iGPU on laptops. 60w and 20w performed the same. Incredible performance. Wu-Kong 1080p low-mid mixed at 45-60 fps depending on upscaling and FG. I think Z2E will be huge if it's similar or more efficient. Exciting times!

What concerns me alot is the increasing emphasis on AI parts within these new CPUs. Strix Point and the new Intel Lunar Lake chip.
It can help optimise battery for laptops and handhelds. I think it's inevitable it will go that direction

Hmm, Fallout 4 has elevators that function without loading screens - so it is possible to do in Bethesda games.
I wonder if it's just they didn't model the inside of the elevators? Or if the inside of the elevators ARE visible, I'm all out of theories.
