In 1986, when RAP was still not catching on in the US, the Beasties came along (with Run DMC) in 1986 with the first platinum selling rap album, License to Ill. Although Fight for your right, was the big MTV hit, everyone in my rural farmland Pennsylvania high school knew, if you could not recite this song, you just were not cool. The Beasties were to rap what Elvis was to rhythm and blues. The took it from the streets of Brooklyn and launched it into radio and television worldwide.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the beat for this song was created by Adam Yauch, MCA. He took the drum beat from the 808 drum machine and recorded it, then flipped it around backyards, and recorded it back to the multi-track to get the backwards drum beat you hear in the song. He had to do it old school because digital recording didn't exist yet.
Also, the story goes that Run from RUN DMC, gave them the opening line for the song - "Now, here's a little story I got to tell . . .". It's the fictional tale of how the 3 members of the Beastie Boys met.

I'm still amazed how many rappers just don't realize the genius of the Beastie Boys. I'm old, grew up in the projects and heard all the early stuff - but they were one of the early hip hop artists that was accepted in the scene in the 80's and were rejected later on. They came up with so many innovations for the genre. Most OG know the Beastie Boys are HoF for a reason.

Lots of junk to sift through, but at the same time there is a lot of buried treasure if you have the patience.

The beasties are so iconic, what you’ll really be blown away from is if you listen to the complete album of Paul’s boutique, there is not a bad song on that entire album. One of the most influential albums of all time, it wasn’t very popular back then they were way ahead of their time. They really brought sampling to the next level they sampled so many songs with it ridiculous. High Plains drifter, shake your rump are some of my favorites of the album. But the whole thing is fire.

I had this single on vinyl which has the instrumental on side b. I used my finger to spin it in reverse and what played was a typical early 80,s beat that was obviously intended to be heard that way. Basically Mike D made a beat and MCA had a thought of reversing it, all while Run of "Run DMC was witnessing and enjoying. The intro "Here's a little story I got to tell" was what Run announced arriving at the studio which began to evolve into this hyperbolic western in which Joe "Run" Simmons has a co writing credit. Although Rick Rubin production was crucial to the album, this iconic track was organically created by the Beasties.

Now Hollywood, I was similarly narrow minded as a young'un. MCA did the reverse beat. He said in interviews he got the idea from Led Zeppelin. Adrock said he walked into MCA's apartment and dude had 4 track tape stretched out and wrapped around some furniture, feeding it backwards into the Ampex.

They were the first to do the beat. MCA created it. They pretty much always made their own beat and usually had a coproducer listed on the album.

When I was a kid I grew up with my dad listening to classic rock and country. My older brother listened to metal and rap. My grandfather listened to opera and symphonic orchestra. My first two CDs when they finally became affordable were a Garth Brooks album, from my dad, and a Bone Thugs album, from my brother. Also taking a field trips in Florida to watch orchestras perform I was the only student in my class to actually be excited. I think I was brought up to enjoy most genres of music and I wouldn't have it any other way. The only downside is I listen to my music on shuffle, so there will be a time when something plays that someone will not like at all.

Fun fact: BB were originally a punk group with a female drummer. When they started their hip-hop career, they still wanted to play their instruments, so recording this album, specifically this song, they recorded the instruments then back tracked them to get this "reverse" style beat

Technically, two former members of Alice in Chains died from ODs. Layne is the one everybody remembers, but Mike Starr also did a few years back.

I was in the 6th grade in 1988. For our talent show, 2 different groups of kids lip synced to this song. Not sure how the teachers allowed them to do it but it was different times then. No way that would be allowed today.

Guys who were in high school at this time - this was a gateway & to be honest white boys could be cool & listen to this. What I appreciate about this one is I get that it’s a heroes journey for guys. Like a western. They’re antiheroes in this song. They aren’t villains but they aren’t innocent either. Now that I have a lifetime of hearing music - and having been a singer - under my belt I am so much more in awe of how great these guys truly were.

Bangers and Mash are freaking amazing. It's sausages and mashed potatoes with onion gravy. We have an Irish place called Brazenhead in my town, and it is my favorite thing on their generally awesome menu
