It would be very useful if you could make a video on career progression of a UX designer, specially in terms of skills and knowledge enhancement. Most of us are actually confused about going ahead after completing basic course or certification on UX designing and keep adding value in a planned way over a period of time.
I wish I had this video guidance when I started my career 2 years back. Did some pretty weird mistakes, as I can see, conveyed through this video. 😅 Hopefully, the upcoming designers won't have to face the interpretations anymore. Really love the way you explain things, the contexts put forward are amazing!

It’s been overemphasized that recruiters spend less than a minute or two while looking at a portfolio. Most folios have same structure and Infact I am one of those persons who finds following this long structure overwhelming, so my question is do we have to show all process while writing our case study knowing full well recruiters 90% of the time won’t have the patience to read all through? Instead of following this structure (overview, problem statement, solution, research, user surveys, mind mapping and all those bla bla bla before arriving at the final designs) why not this? (Overview, problem statement, solution, KPIs and impact on users and business and then display of final designs, key takeaways and nexts steps) So please I am really curious as to the best way to present a case study that will get any recruiter hooked and also raise the chances of being invited for an interview.

Chetan, as you transitioned from CA to product designer can you tell me how to set a solid goal be it 1 year goal to transition from any other profession to being a product designer how should I prep depending on current market, is it even possible to get a decently paying full time job in about 1 year. Keeping in mind when transitioning we are having a day/night job. So how to lay out time effectively, how not to loose motivation. It'll really helpful if you share some of your insights, regards.
1 year is very much enough. Even 4-6 months is enough. Well motivation comes from within. As long as you like and love product design you will be equally motivated.
I would like to add here that Product based companies usually hire people who are either from a Tier 1 design schools or have several internships during their education time, which simply means that those people knew they wanted to go in the field of Design. However if you are starting out as a fresher or switching your profile, Design agencies are a really good option to explore which industry you are interested in as you get more project flexibility compared to a Tier 1 MNC. Now the person in this video is assuming that designers in Product MNCs are better than those in design agencies, but it might just mean that they have more experience doing design work (which companies value). Remember that you are coming from a different background which might seem unrelated (like business, research, marketing, cs, anthropology) but it is your edge and you have to bank on that. Explore your options in a design agency if you have to and gain domain experience, which you will probably not get in other companies. And you can always switch from a Design agency to Product company, but you will face a big pay cut vice versa. So explore initially if you have to, and make your way up.
I would strongly disagree on a few points here. If you look at the top 30 starts ups today, 90% of the designer/ never went to design school nor had internships. They all came from different backgrounds. I would also strongly say that designers in product companies have a lot more responsibilities and are required to perform tasks at every stage of shipping a product or feature. But in agencies it’s very likely that you will be performing only 1 or 2 tasks. You may not collaborate with engineers, you may not AB test, you may not measure the performance, you may not get to make product decisions as the client forces you to follow their ideas and a lot many disadvantages. In a product company, a designer acts like the parent of a child, but in an agency the designer acts more like the baby sitter of the child. And yes, most product companies pay more than design agencies since it’s 1 designer who is given more roles and responsibilities rather than an agency where many designers are working on a project of the same scale.

Oh yes. Not saying that design agencies aren’t a good place to start. Aim for product always. If things don’t work out, join an agency. But the longer you’re in an agency, the harder it gets to move into a product company so make sure you get out of the agency in 2-3 years max! Design agencies are not the best places for career growth especially in India. To everyone reading this comment. Of all the best designers you know and look upto ‘how many of them work in a design agency?’

I'm currently in my 4th year of Btech in CSE (Tier 3). And I have been working in a small startup company for around 1.5 year as an UI/UX design intern and when I joined I was the sole designer. And a month back, they have said that they want to hire me as full time designer when I graduate (haven't disclosed the salary yet). I'm currently feeling paranoid should I stay in this company or try to look for a higher level company as I feel my skill are getting stagnant and as I don't have any mentors/guidance, and also in my startup we don't do user research and we mainly rely on feedback when the feature is launched which is very limited. And sometimes the feature take few months to launch and by that time I have already completed the next iterations which are mainly based mine or our teams assumptions. Despite these issues, I feel the product has the potential and also the everyone of the team are such great people and so much dedicated to their craft. I don't know what to do!! So feedback/perspectives/opinions would help me a lot!

How can one assess if a company's design team is of high quality, and what criteria should we use to determine the right individual or team to join for a rewarding experience? 3.What should I focus on practicing outside of office hours to boost my confidence and attract more recruiter calls?
1. If a company prefers candidates with degrees rather than skills, then you’re targeting the wrong companies! Even if it’s a good company, there are tons of other good companies that will value skills over degrees. If you don’t have a degree, there is nothing you do can other than proving to them that you have rock solid skills. 2. The biggest way to know if a company has a good team is to judge the quality of the Designers and Product Managers by talking to them during interviews. Judge the maturity of their questions, what skills do they value in their company, how do they critique your work, did they challenge your designs, were you impressed with things they spoke about and what they spoke about? 3. If you have less than 2 years of experience focus on getting into a company that’s better than your current company. Don’t aim too high unless you actually think you can crack a job in a fantastic company. 4. Set a high benchmark. The more you interview with companies, the more you’ll be able to validate better. DO NOT think they are smart and great just because they are Senior or Lead and have 5+ years of experience. I’ve seen plenty of Lead Designers who are are fit for the role of a Junior PD. 5. What you need to focus on is for you to understand. Just put out great quality work. However you have better chances of getting an interview when you apply to a company with great work, than assuming a recruiter will reach out to you.

It’s never too late. If you want to get into a better company, then you’re going to have to match the skills that the other company requires. It also depends on the role you’re applying for. You may have to start as Associate PD or PD I or if you match their skills you can join as PD II or Senior PD. So it’s always the company and role you’re applying for. They won’t care even if you have 4 years of experience. But if you want a senior role, then they will expect a lot from you.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to show screens. Talk less about research and clearly mention the problems. While explaining solutions you can mention KPIs and business/user goals
Amazing video Chethan. So I have been working in the first stage ( small startups) as design intern previously but again I couldn't see any benefits. Now I have two options. Join another such company cause I feel my skills are not that good currently for getting into the good ones Or work on my skills and then apply to good companies( in this case there would some break/gap in my resume. I am concerned about that) What would you advice in this case?

I think the easiest way to is to start looking at problems, analysing then and coming up with solutions. Be curious and ask why is this a problem, why should you do this, why does this work this way? Etc
Hey Chethan, great content. One question- why do you say that working in service based companies would limit growth? Wouldn't you learn a lot more by working on diverse products rather than just one product
Good question. So we need to look at this at a very top level. Disclaimer: I’m generalising things here, of course there will be exceptions. The first thing we need to understand is how much does your company value design? Does it look at design as an investment or an expense? Service based companies typically create products for others. Clients ideally just want a product designed for them. They dont often care about design as much as product or engineering. They just want a product without a specific period of time. So in that case the service based company looks the design as ideally an expense and don’t often care too much about design. They want to deliver a decent design to the customer because they paid for it. They don’t care if the product eventually fails or succeeds in the market. And as a designer our job is not just to hand over designs and not care about the product. Who do you think does a better job at taking care or ensuring the long term growth of a child? The baby sitter or the parent. A baby sitter probably will take care of 10 babies in a period of time. But a parent will have to take care of their baby forever. A parent can always be a baby sitter. But a baby sitter can never be a parent. Similarly working on diverse products in very short periods of time is not a good thing in terms of growth, because once you hand over the designs you don’t take care of the product and wonder how it’s doing in the market. You don’t have skin in the game and so you lose out on understanding data, metrics etc. This hampers the growth in the long term as the industry expects a lot more.

However, if I'm not able to get into one of these product startups or established product companies like you mentioned, is it wiser to 1) develop my skills first at then apply or 2) apply for an internship role in those companies or 3) get a full time role in service/studios and then try to get into product companies? Become ur fan when I watched your video don't be an NPC. This is another eye-opening and amazing video.stating all the facts as it is. I have a small doubt, In your journey (with no design team at all with high sal or low) u came out in 4 months. But in my case as i realised this later after 1.5 years (no designers team with low salary)i realised I'm on the wrong path [ various factors are there for why I didn't realise it earlier ] Made mistake learned from it But for the past 8 months I took a break and upskiling myself in the product deisgning. Recently attended an interview as well and the offer is also pretty good (based on the type of product company) While I'm confident in my skills, I'm concerned about how my lack of prior work experience might affect me (even though it's for fresher role). If the company primarily values skills, I feel prepared, but if they expect extensive previous experience, I worry about how to approach or deal with the situation. Do you have any advice on how to handle this scenario ?
@@DesignPilot no, I've discussed the salary at the early stage itself (don't wanna do all the stuff and realise later it's not matching the expectation) Cleared a couple of rounds (app critique, whiteboarding ) But I made a few mistakes in the design assignment. Got feedback from them ,working on those areas. But it gave me xtra energy boost about my skills and I had a good interview experience But still in this area i have this doubt and wanna know how to handle (your perspective on this)

Bro , I'm a bdes fresher at IIT Guwahati. This year 5-10 seniors from our department bagged a package of 52lpa. 85% people of the batch got more than 15lpa. I wonder what'll be their salary in 10 years . I saw people who earned 10k per month now getting 1 cpa in 10-15 years of experience. But what's the case of these people earning 50lpa from starting itself, If they're are good at their work and switch jobs every years ( i mean the best case ) !? What's the maximum salary you've heard of a designer(lead) in India ?
Hey Chetan, Oracle is also a product based i.e present in B2B [mostly] and B2C domain... can't we divide the Product based into 2 sub-parts like B2B [like Atlassian, GitLab, SAP, etc] and B2C product-based companies?
So see. The thing is yes it is a product company and service based company. But with companies like Oracle, they don’t need the product to be amazing in terms of UI and UX for the company to make money. But that’s not the case with Atlassian for example. So it’s not B2B or B2C

You should shift as soon as possible. But again, do you have all the skills to work in a good product company? If not, there is absolutely no point in shifting. Working in a poor product company will be the same as your current situation.
In simple words, you need to be good at UI, you need to know how to design any flow with a good Ux, be familiar with many types of design patterns, and mainly know how to identify problems that are worth solving and come with sensible solutions.

It’s never too late. If you want to get into a better company, then you’re going to have to match the skills that the other company requires. It also depends on the role you’re applying for. You may have to start as Associate PD or PD I or if you match their skills you can join as PD II or Senior PD. So it’s always the company and role you’re applying for. They won’t care even if you have 4 years of experience. But if you want a senior role, then they will expect a lot from you.

Chethan, I was reading all comments and stumbled across a comment talking about portfolio and you asked what exactly he wanted you to cover on it. So here is my own question.
It’s been overemphasized that recruiters spend less than a minute or two while looking at a portfolio. Most folios have same structure and Infact I am one of those persons who finds following this long structure overwhelming, so my question is do we have to show all process while writing our case study knowing full well recruiters 90% of the time won’t have the patience to read all through? Instead of following this structure (overview, problem statement, solution, research, user surveys, mind mapping and all those bla bla bla before arriving at the final designs) why not this? (Overview, problem statement, solution, KPIs and impact on users and business and then display of final designs, key takeaways and nexts steps)
So please I am really curious as to the best way to present a case study that will get any recruiter hooked and also raise the chances of being invited for an interview.
The most important thing to keep in mind is to show screens. Talk less about research and clearly mention the problems. While explaining solutions you can mention KPIs and business/user goals

So I have been working in the first stage ( small startups) as design intern previously but again I couldn't see any benefits.
Now I have two options.
Join another such company cause I feel my skills are not that good currently for getting into the good ones
Or work on my skills and then apply to good companies( in this case there would some break/gap in my resume. I am concerned about that)
What would you advice in this case?
Take a break if you can. Highly recommend. Break in resume is the last thing you should worry about

I think the easiest way to is to start looking at problems, analysing then and coming up with solutions. Be curious and ask why is this a problem, why should you do this, why does this work this way? Etc
Hey Chethan, great content. One question- why do you say that working in service based companies would limit growth? Wouldn't you learn a lot more by working on diverse products rather than just one product
Good question. So we need to look at this at a very top level. Disclaimer: I’m generalising things here, of course there will be exceptions.
The first thing we need to understand is how much does your company value design? Does it look at design as an investment or an expense?
Service based companies typically create products for others. Clients ideally just want a product designed for them. They dont often care about design as much as product or engineering. They just want a product without a specific period of time. So in that case the service based company looks the design as ideally an expense and don’t often care too much about design. They want to deliver a decent design to the customer because they paid for it. They don’t care if the product eventually fails or succeeds in the market.
And as a designer our job is not just to hand over designs and not care about the product. Who do you think does a better job at taking care or ensuring the long term growth of a child? The baby sitter or the parent.
A baby sitter probably will take care of 10 babies in a period of time. But a parent will have to take care of their baby forever. A parent can always be a baby sitter. But a baby sitter can never be a parent.
Similarly working on diverse products in very short periods of time is not a good thing in terms of growth, because once you hand over the designs you don’t take care of the product and wonder how it’s doing in the market. You don’t have skin in the game and so you lose out on understanding data, metrics etc. This hampers the growth in the long term as the industry expects a lot more.

However, if I'm not able to get into one of these product startups or established product companies like you mentioned, is it wiser to 1) develop my skills first at then apply or 2) apply for an internship role in those companies or 3) get a full time role in service/studios and then try to get into product companies?

I have a small doubt, In your journey (with no design team at all with high sal or low) u came out in 4 months.
But in my case as i realised this later after 1.5 years (no designers team with low salary)i realised I'm on the wrong path [ various factors are there for why I didn't realise it earlier ]

But for the past 8 months I took a break and upskiling myself in the product deisgning. Recently attended an interview as well and the offer is also pretty good (based on the type of product company)
While I'm confident in my skills, I'm concerned about how my lack of prior work experience might affect me (even though it's for fresher role). If the company primarily values skills, I feel prepared, but if they expect extensive previous experience, I worry about how to approach or deal with the situation.
Do you have any advice on how to handle this scenario ?

Cleared a couple of rounds (app critique, whiteboarding )
But I made a few mistakes in the design assignment.
Got feedback from them ,working on those areas.
But it gave me xtra energy boost about my skills and I had a good interview experience
But still in this area i have this doubt and wanna know how to handle (your perspective on this)

Bro , I'm a bdes fresher at IIT Guwahati. This year 5-10 seniors from our department bagged a package of 52lpa. 85% people of the batch got more than 15lpa. I wonder what'll be their salary in 10 years . I saw people who earned 10k per month now getting 1 cpa in 10-15 years of experience. But what's the case of these people earning 50lpa from starting itself, If they're are good at their work and switch jobs every years ( i mean the best case ) !? What's the maximum salary you've heard of a designer(lead) in India ?

Hey Chetan, Oracle is also a product based i.e present in B2B [mostly] and B2C domain... can't we divide the Product based into 2 sub-parts like B2B [like Atlassian, GitLab, SAP, etc] and B2C product-based companies?
So see. The thing is yes it is a product company and service based company. But with companies like Oracle, they don’t need the product to be amazing in terms of UI and UX for the company to make money. But that’s not the case with Atlassian for example. So it’s not B2B or B2C

You should shift as soon as possible. But again, do you have all the skills to work in a good product company? If not, there is absolutely no point in shifting. Working in a poor product company will be the same as your current situation.

In simple words, you need to be good at UI, you need to know how to design any flow with a good Ux, be familiar with many types of design patterns, and mainly know how to identify problems that are worth solving and come with sensible solutions.
