The titanium frypan has arrived so i thought i would do a shootout between the Trangia non stick and the titanium frying pan. As it's pancake day it was obvious what i would cook.
Which pan would you buy? Leave a comment letting us know which pan you would choose.

Titanium, lightweight, tough great for boiling water poor for cooking food with. Its pretty much the worst metal you can use for food/fry pans because it simply does not spread heat, it creates 'hot spots' so no matter how well you season the pan it will still stick.

That was a way better crepe than I was expecting on a titanium pan, about the hardest thing to cook on titanium.
The issue is that titanium is very light, but it's not lighter than aluminum, bet because it is so much stronger, the titanium pan is thiner, but still stronger than aluminum. The problem is this makes for poor heat transfer within the titanium, coupled with titanium quickly transferring heat, you get massive hot spots on titanium pans that make it hard to cook evenly. You did a great job, especially for never cooking on it before.

For a Trangia stove, that seems like a lot of yellow flame, and is burning like a torch. Not sure what you’re using for fuel, but I use denatured alcohol in my Alocs stove (Trangia knock off), and I get a nice blue flame, with little to no “torching”. The other thing is, it made sense that the second pan cooked faster the second time around… That’s the nature of titanium. It gets hot fast, and will only get hotter the longer it is heated. I would’ve used the snuffer control to reduce the flame on the second pan. It’ll slow that heating down a little bit.
I am a firm believer. That nonstick is the way to go, especially when camping out in the woods. It’s just so much easier to clean and it makes for more delight when cooking.
Aluminum pans, titanium pans. If you’re not paying attention food gets burned to them, and that just makes more hassle to clean out in the woods.
The right way to clean any nonstick pan is to do it with hot boiling water right after you’re done cooking, while it’s still on the flame. How do you do that when you’re out in the woods? You can’t. You have to stop and boil water and then add it to the pan AFTER it cools down the first time!
I’ve proven this time and time again at home searing steaks on steel pans. My wife can never get them clean because she takes them off the stove and throws them in the sink. Wrong. When you’re done cooking, you dump the grease wipe it with a paper towel and then very slowly add hot, boiling water. Use a plastic spatula upside down, using the force of the edge, and that searing stuff will come off the bottom of the pan every time without hassle. Same thing for aluminum and titanium.
You did pretty good with the titanium in this illustration. But the first time you take your eyes off of it while you’re cooking something it’s all gonna burn to the pan.
Nonstick. That’s the way to go. We just have to take care of them a little more carefully.
    Thanks for the video!
    👍

I have had a trangia 27 with a non stick frying pan for about 40 years and it is still my goto cookset. Aluminium inner pans have been upgraded to annodised versions but other than a few miinor scratches and dings the old red frying pan is still in good condition despite frying up bacon and eggs for breakfast everytime I went camping.

The Trangia non stick pans have provided a lot of good meals for me in the past.
Since then I have a Evernew Titanium Non Stick frying Pan for my Evernew Appalachian set. The Evernew Non Stick Titanium Frying Pans come in three different sizes. ( 6.5 " , 7.2" , 8.07" ) and are Non Stick. I have cooked Eggs , Pancakes and even a ( quick ) trail side Pizza I came up with without any sticking problems. Keith Titanium also makes Non Stick titanium frying pans.
By the way I also regulate the temperature of the pan like you do , adjusting the height of the pan from the flame.

Paul please take note that you need to season the titanium frying pan with Rapeseed oil a couple of times because it has a higher burning point than normal oil and also then it is more better for frying on the waistline and once you have tried this you will always have a bottle of rapeseed oil in your food cupboard and it's great for seasoning carbon steel frying pans and carbon steel woks believe me it works fantastic 😁👍

I just got my first Ti pans and the more you cook on them the better you will get. Ive found it best to cook at a lower temp unless your boiling water and that will come out amazing. I got mine used but they are evernew Ti ceramic coated and while you can still burn they clean up easy if it does happen, really just needs a deglaze and its clean. Any pan if it isnt coated will stick, if its uncoated then season them with oil heat to high temp wipe clean then cook under the temp that the oil was seasoned and should act like a non stick fwiw. If your not a great cook or tend to it all the time id get something that has better heat distribution, non burnt food makes for better meals.

Basically the trangia non-stick is a better pan for cooking with. Thick base, curved sides, but heavy. Titanium one is hard work for cooking, has a stupid handle but is much lighter. Like you say, depends what you want.

For non stick pans or pans with not much burnt on food grass works quite well as a scourer. Medium levels I use a nylon cleaning pad, like the sponges with one green nylon face. Thats safe on non stick. The ultimate for metal pans is the thick stainless steel wire wool type scourers, you can usually get them at bigger supermarkets, but they damage non stick coatings only usable on metal.

I always attempt to lighten my loadout, but I ain't compromising my cookset just to save a few gramms on my set up..

I will try after seasoning the pan and see where we are. I think you are right though 👍

That's why I don't like and never use alcohol stoves - the flame is too uncontrollable.
A gas canister stove is vastly superior in that respect and the total weight and size of the package is about the same as an alcohol burner plus alcohol bottle.

they make titanium pans with ceramic coating they work well

as the ti is heating up too uneven and with that the thermal elongation of the material, the ceramic coat will very soon crack and the non stick property's will vanish. I have one coated pan, was great at the beginning but now is all sticking like hell. I'm back to the good old carbon steel cheap pans than can be seasoned. heavy, but long term they give you more fun. all the non stick stuff come off sooner than expected.

@@alx252 the coating in question is fused into the metal (at lest the one I got) and don't crack

Problem with titanium pans is they a lightweight and fin so they get hotter faster hence the oil burns never try melted butter

Any pan can become non-stick, just get the pan very hot then put oil in the pan and coat it evenly and instantly the pan will become nonstick, Chinese chef use this technic for thousands of years

Paul a little tip mate, always check the lid ;) haha
Come on peter we need comedy lol
Id rather carry that extra bit of weight for a non stick pan mate, iv never rated titanium apart from its weight its good for nothing

Pesky lid! It seems from all the responses that titanium is good for boiling water and cutlery, cups ect. not cooking.

Nice pancakes more ike the French crepe not the thick things the Yanks seem to call a pancake.
Titanium is great for many things but I gave up with it for frying and I did persist for a while, tried various things (Pam non stick spray helps but I really didn't want to use that form of oil).

titaniums thermal property is mental can boil water in under 3 seconds using a cup, that plus being lightweight means you'll use less fuel etc, so its just not a weight saving exercise

Titanium doesn't disperse heat evenly, making it more prone to scorching. Never cook over an open flame with Titanium.
