Workshop Hardware Storage Harbor Freight Case Mods

  • While spring cleaning my workshop, I revisit my parts and hardware storage solution and share a few tips and ideas I've come up with. I use 3D printing to customize some of the Harbor Freight parts cases to make them more versatile for both small parts and now larger parts storage.
    Many shop supplies come in their own cases, and while these are nice, their inconsistent sizes don't stack or store well with parts storage cases from other manufacturers. The 20 bin Harbor Freight case only has 3 sizes of insert cups. Using this as a starting point I created variations of these stock sizes to more closely fit my hardware.
    I have an underlying belief that tools and consumables should not be stored together. The exception to this is single function tools. If a particular tool is only used with certain consumables then in that case it makes sense that the tool should be stored with the hardware. I do this with the crimping tool for wire connectors.
    Now I am extending this to my Kreg Jig. I designed and 3D printed a custom insert for the Harbor Freight parts cases to hold my Kreg Jig along with the various sizes of Kreg Pocket Screws. This allows me to get rid of a bunch of mismatched sized cases and frees up more valuable shelf space.

    Kazin foam is great. I do keep most of the tools, bits, and various screws, I need for a particular process together. I don't have a 3D, or a laser printer, so I do make some small custom boxes to fit in the cases. just wish they would make a 3x or 4x tall case as well. for bulkier power tools.

    hi pete its me again . you got me looking at the 3d printers now for the parts i need (lk5 pro) do they require a special program to make like boxes that you print. mine would be slightly larger. 6.5 x6.5 x 2.5 . thanks steve

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, you need 2 programs. First a CAD program to design the part. There are several popular programs and it depends if you are trying to make geometric shapes, like boxes, or more organic shapes - like trying to design a model of a tree. Organic modeling is something I've never really gotten into. The second program is something to take that completed CAD model and slice it up (the program is actually called a slicer) into code that the 3D printer understands. I use Fusion360 for the CAD drawing program and CURA or Simplyfy3D for the slicer. There are free and paid versions of both types of programs.

    The concept of scaling up and down the individual container volumes is so obvious, one wonders if sheer laziness is the only barrier to manufacturers doing the same. I have to think DIY 3D printing is vastly more costly, even in plastic raw materials, than buying OEM units, and only persons invested in 3D equipment are going to have the wherewithal to do this, but maybe efforts like yours will prod the Big Brands to make more versatile items.

      There are certain parts of the lean methodology that I believe have value in them. However, as a guy working in my shop -primarily by myself, I don’t see the need to outline the spot on my floor where the trash can goes. LOL thanks for watching!

      @@PeteRondeau Please do - I've seen a number of re-models or customizations for the harbor freight storage containers and they all have the same problem you noted - TINY FEET! The creators modeled the tiny nub feet and about 25% of the time I have one of the feet break off when removing the support material. Yours are nice and beefy and STAY where they're put. Kudos! (oh, and you also rounded the internal corners which is fantastic)

    These are great suggestions. I learned a lot and have subscribed. One tip for that miscellaneous box with lots of things that you don’t know what to label. What I do is I use Evernote and and create a title for the box. You can take a picture of the entire open box with all the parts in it to store along with the file. Then dictate each item in the box. So next time you were looking for something like a key ring you just type key ring into Evernote and it will tell you which box it is in. It’s a simple solution Evernote is available for the PC, the iPad and all phones. When you save the file it goes to the cloud so it is always available on whichever device you are using.

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  3 роки тому

      Excellent point, then it wouldn't matter what you label it- could just be "Box A". I do something similar in the other part of the shop where I stock parts that I inventory, but never thought about doing it for the more random stuff. Glad you got something out of it and thanks for watching and subscribing!

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  4 роки тому +1

      Not yet, but I'm working on getting them cleaned up to make them available. I need to tweak the files. I was having some problems with my printer calibration when I created this, and it was quicker to adjust the file then fix the printer. I'm concerned if I release them as-is, they won't print out at the correct size on a properly calibrated machine. Thanks for watching! (and be on the lookout for an announcement when I do get them uploaded.)

    Thingiverse is a great source for these models, if you don't do your own designs. 3D printers are awesome additions to any workshop. I'm an electronics enthusiast. This means I have bunch of components like resistors. So I printed up cases that are 3 levels tall with 6 compartments for each level. Fantastic addition to these cases.

      I keep promising to make these files available and I keep getting distracted but other things. It is a bit more involved than just throwing them up online, I want to make sure the files are correct before I make them available. When I created them, I modified the files to compensate for a calibration issue in my printer, so I'm concerned if they are printed as-is, they won't come out the correct size on somebody else's printer. But I promise I will get to them! Thanks for watching!

    Would you consider selling the larger bins?

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  4 роки тому

      I'm really not set up for making them. My 3D printing process is not reliable enough to just walk up and make a part. There is always a small chance that the part will fail in some way- sometimes hours into the project. It is nearly impossible for me to price something like that when I can't reliably predict how many times I will have to run it to come up with a good part. I'm currently working on making some small tweaks to the models and will be putting them up online for anyone who wants to print them though.
