    For the life of me, I'm befuddled as to why Nissan Leaf didn't switch the CCS1 for NA. If they had switched and added an active cooling for their BMS in the Leaf, it would have been a winner for low cost EV with the Bolt EV. Let's hope they survive. Thanks Tom and I'm always learning every time I watch your channel.

      As a former owner of a 2011, 2105 and 2019 Nissan Leafs I could not understand why they would not upgrade them. They were terrific cars. I guess making these types of changes was just too costly? Once the battery heated up from one DC fast charge any attempt to do a second fast charge was agonizingly slow. Only did one road trop really in the 2019 and my wife wasn't happy.😂

    • @DonBarthel
      @DonBarthel Місяць тому

      @@EVVolksmanID.4with the 62kWh LEAF, you can do two fast charges in a day before the charging speed slows appreciably. That's good for about 500 miles a day, assuming a level 2 to 100% overnight.

      @GROGU123 Місяць тому +1

      Neither the Leaf or Bolt are designed to be road trip cars. You're supposed to just commute and charge at home. They are extremely outdated with their electronics.

    • @jrghays46
      @jrghays46 13 днів тому

      @@GROGU123 The Bolt can be road tripped fairly painlessly these days. If you don't drive a Kia or Hyundai, 45 mins at a fast charger is not unusual. In that same time span, the bolt can typically fast charge enough to make it to the next waypoint. The charge rate is not impressive, but the battery is fairly small at 66kwh and that somewhat compensates for the low charge rate. Someone in an Equinox or Lightning capped at 150 kw peak rate will end up plugged in just as long as the bolt owner.

    The pin is actually to lock the NACS side of the adaptor, so it’s impossible to disconnect the NACS plug when the adaptor is plugged into the car.

    • @GregHassler
      @GregHassler Місяць тому +2

      @@lemongavinethe other manufacturers accommodate the same thing in a different way. This is just the way Tesla designed it. The Lectron, for instance, has its own separate latch for the NACS plug, and if you press that button to release it, charging will stop immediately. Similar on the A2Z, where the single latch is integrated into releases on both sides. None of the adapters are able to be just pulled out while charging.

      There is a difference: Nissan, I guess for cost cutting, has shot itself into the foot by modifying CCS1 port leaving the space between 2 DC fast charging pins on the port empty using just a sliver of plastic around the pins. That is not exactly CCS1.
      You can't have any modifications in USB or PS2 ports or plugs, and those to be able to still work.

You installed one of the first level two chargers there back in 2011 or there about. We had a 2011 Nissan Leaf and it had like 75 miles of range. We couldn't make it from Basking Ridge to Montclair and back so we would stop at your restaurant and eat and charge the car. My wife remembers you had bottles with corks on the tables? It is very frustrating how much Nissan has been hanging Leaf owners out to dry with the changing fast charger ports. They made a choice to stick with the CHAdeMO and so many people bought the car because it is a great little car and made an assumption that since no one in the NA market was making a decision on things that it would eventually get sorted and adapters would happen but here we are. The only adapters Leaf owners get are 3rd party ones.

      I didn't know if it locked the pin on the back so you can't undo the NACS while it's charging.

    • @GregHassler
      @GregHassler Місяць тому

      Yes, it is, contrary to how Tom explains it. All the pin does is interlocks the release on the back side of the adapter so you can't press it down and release the NACS plug while the adapter is plugged into the car. If that interlock doesn't engage it won't allow the vehicle to charge. It does exactly what you explained.

    Well… good for Nissan. I really am starting to wish that automakers had just made CCS-1 the "standard," like they did in Europe with CCS-2. With adapters, and authorization from Tesla, there would be NO problem. And Tesla would just have to adapt its ports, again like in Europe, and also in China.

    Tom, Nissan kinda screwed me here and I'm hoping you are able to get in touch with them. We have an Ariya but also have a Bolt EUV. I ordered the NACS adapter from GM and the official Tesla one arrived back in October. I don't want or need a second adapter, but I'm basically required to in order to use the Ariya with a supercharger. For the life of me I can't understand why they don't sell that little plug separately. If they did, I'd be golden. But as of right now I'm pretty mad.

    CHADAMO is the main reason Japan refuses to want to produce any decent EV's. CHADAMO is a 50kw standard and, in JAPAN, there are stations virtually everywhere. Furthermore, Japan is not a "driving" country, driving is mostly a city affair, the notion of "road tripping" is thoroughly alien, if you need to travel anywhere you take a fast train and thats it! Clean, very fast and given the superbly extensive city railway system, you don't really need a car unless running errands in town. The notion of a long range EV, that would benefit from very fast charging is a little alien to their whole idea of transportation. It's a pity since that has put the future of their whole auto industry in jeopardy.
