I cannot thank you enough for this video and the related ones on the NACS-to-CCS1 adapters. They are brilliantly done. You provided exactly the information I needed when I needed it. I just ordered the A2Z Typhoon Pro so I can take a trip through some remote areas of the country only serviced by Tesla Superchargers in my Rivian R1S. Thanks for the discount code!

We bought the Lectron Vortex and had the difficult to disconnect issue. We sent it back and received an updated replacement which we’ve not been able to properly test on either our BMW iX or Volvo C40. Since we plan to carry an adapter in each car we may give the A2Z a try. I like that it comes in a padded case.
Thanks Tom for the valuable info!

No rush here to charge at 1👀kW with an adapter. By the time they add the IONIQ 5 as a vehicles that can charge; it’ll probably have a native J3400 inlet. Hope Charge Point, EVgo and EA builds have better cable cooling. Nice video Tom💯 30:58

Stopping charging from pressing the button on the NACS handle means pressing the little dot on the Supercharger handle. That safely ends charging before unlocking the adapter.

I'm using the Original Version of the A to Z adapter (also thanks for the discount code), and I was able to pull 173KW from a St. George Utah Supercharger July 14th. I was so suprised I took a screenshot I'm happy to share, but I think it's from what they call the 10% boost that Ford BMS offers when first plugging in .. Plugged in at 3:32pm @ 51% and I the truck said I would reach 90% by 4:24pm which as you know the last 10% is the bulk of that time.. ~ edit on my 2023 Ford Lightning

I thought it odd that the two stage release trigger released the NACS cable secondarily, even though it should be disconnected first. The video shows Tom compensating by getting a good grip on the adapter to keep the connection to the car while removing the cable.

The previous version of the adapter (and the official Tesla adapter) instructed us to put the dispenser plug into adapter BEFORE plugging into the vehicle. The claim was for safety.
So I don't understand why they're now instructing us to plug the adapter into the vehicle BEFORE putting the dispenser plug into the adapter? Why was it not safe in the first version of adapter but now is? I assume they've made some technical change, but would love to know the details.

You cannot simply return it for the new one. Tech products are always improving quickly, the same goes for smartphones, a couple months after buying one it's no longer the latest version. If it breaks, or stops working in some way, you can return it under warranty, but you can't just I want the new one so take this back.

EA is unreliable and if you travel to/through very rural areas that are far away from interstates, you need all of the options you can get at your disposal.
The EV charging network is getting pretty decent, but there are still places that you can’t really get to/from, especially during the hot Summer when EVs hit thermal capacity issues.

The locking mechanism on the version 1 of the adapter was not the most intuitive, we did have to help a lot of customers with it, because many of them thought the lock was automatic and they couldn’t charge. As an EVSE company, our goal is to provide easy to use products and version 1 was not the easiest to use. A radical change was needed, we don’t like wasting time or delaying changes, this is not us.

Things have been pretty sad for my Spark EV. When I used the Magicdock and the long bar at the top clearly prevented the clasp on the car from engaging. Also, the Delta EVgo units just give error codes and alot of the Nouria Schneider Electric units will fast-fail without hesitation. Why does 50kW of DC power need to be so complicated?! 98k and I wish i had baught pretty much any gas car! Ive spoke to EvGo time and time again and they just read from their script and obviously could care less.

Unfortunately, GM has basically orphaned the Spark EV. It was a low-production compliance car, and the company doesn't provide any ongoing support to the EV charging networks to help with compatibility issues - I know this for a fact. If GM wanted to solve these problems, the charging companies would be happy to fix them, but they cannot without GM's cooperation.

Is there really a difference to stop charging via app or screen VS the button on the handle/adapter? I don't recall any difference in delay whether I stop via screen or handle button. Or at least it doesn't feel different enough where the AC-DC converter capacitors would have time to discharge before opening the contactor.
Unless it's a fraction of a second difference and that's enough. Would be interesting to learn more on that.

@@jeffthomas7383 Yes, I received the A2Z Typhoon Pro adapter. I confirmed that I can charge at the Tesla Supercharger stations available to the Chevy Blazer platform. I did just as you did: I set my vehicle to 2024 Chevy Blazer. The Supercharger down the street appears available. I went over there, plugged in, and initiated the charge in the Tesla app. I was at 32% SOC and was able to pull 130 kWh. I went to 50% in 8 minutes. One thing - make sure you read the instructions for the adapter. They specify that you plug it into the vehicle first and then plug the Tesla cable into the adapter. When finished, detach the Tesla cable first (you must click the adapter release button). After detaching the Tesla cable, you can then remove the adapter from your car.

I have the 1st version and should get my free Ford/Tesla adapter in a couple weeks. Like many of your viewers I got the A2Z because I wanted to do a long road trip and my favoured route had Tesla Chargers and nothing else (Valemont, Clearwater BC). I now go to a Tesla Charger to warm my battery while getting a coffee before going on a L2 at work. I will try plugging the adapter in first next time but I always use the disconnect button by the charging port to end the session. BTW, thanks for your videos, excepting yourself, nobody explains this stuff very well. Just wondering if you'd do OBD adapters and Apps. I have a 'Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0' and use CarScanner on my iPhone and I use that to monitor my HV and 12v SOC and other aspects like battery temperature. Doing that I have had issues with my 12v battery and discovered I left an Air Pump plugged in my USB port in the back :D. It wasn't the scanner (which has a low power mode) but now I'm being a bit careful and now there is a 'battery protection' mode on my 12v in FordPass which seems to help. Some discussion about 12v systems might be cool.

Tom, you are correct, the original A2Z Typhoon adapter instructions state to connect it to the NACS cable first, then insert into your charge port.

Don't bother with an adapter. You will never find a tesla supercharger u can use it with. I live in the silicon Valley, about 40 miles from tesla headquarters and manufacturing facility. There is only 1 available supercharger within about a 200 mile radius of me (Scots Valley). Nothing in San Jose or San Francisco or any of the cities in between. There's one in placerville, but nothing in Sacramento or en route. Nothing in Tahoe either. Along i5 and i101 between sacramento and Los Angeles (400+ miles), there are none. Don't waste your money. There are many hundreds of superchargers for tesla though, but only for tesla.

Just got the new Typhoon Pro adapter today, 8/15/24. Will be using it with my Rivian. I ordered it the same day it became available to order, July 6. (Thanks for the coupon code!!) Mine indicated it shipped on 8/5/24 but in actuality, that was the date the label was made and it didn’t really leave the UPS facility until 8/9/24.The exterior box was pretty beaten up and it didn’t come in the white box you got but it was in a form fitted travel case and appears to be in good shape. It still has the exposed screws yours has-no rubber coverings as you mentioned you were told it would come with in your video. Does that mean I got a preproduction version like yours or did they decide not to cover the exposed screws? Also, the instructions have a caution note “Always safeguard the NACS to CCS1 Adapter from moisture, water, and foreign objects…”. Does this mean you shouldn’t use it in inclement weather conditions? I would hope they only mean not to expose the connection points from moisture and that it would be a sealed unit while charging.
Thanks for all of your videos and reviews. They are extremely helpful.

You saw more power because you were at 45% when you started the charge because of the Ford Boost charge curve. Nothing to do with the adapter.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughneylikely because your battery was nice and cool since you had just driven from home to the Supercharger.
In the heat I’ve been getting horrible speeds with the Supercharger Network. I was getting as slow as 68kW off boost. I went to an EA next and was getting 114kW off boost. I think the Supercharger cables are subpar and can’t handle the high heat where the fat bulky EA cables handle the heat much better.

Nice to see A2Z updated the adapter to match feedback. I will say on my plain A2Z with my Lightning on a supercharger last month I got 172 or 174 kwh for a while. So I think it is more the supercharger software than which version of the A2Z it is.
Also that my A2Z was a holy bugger to get the Tesla to plug into it. An extra 1/2mm of wiggle room would have been nice!

I have a 2023 Ford Lighting and I have had some issues with the charging system (or not). I also have an EMPORIA Level 2 EV Charger that I use to charge my truck. I have the Amps set to 48amps when I originally bought it and it charged my truck with no problem. Then after some time it would not charge, I immediately thought it was the charger. After contacting and troubleshooting that system, I was sent another. And low and behold, the same problem existed. I then took my truck to the dealer to have it checked, I was told that they could not find any problems with the charging system. So, I hurried home to try out another charger, and what do you know, no change. The charger starts charging and once it hits 40amp it kicks off and starts over.
Is there something that has changed in the last 2 months with Ford or is it Emporia, why can’t I go over 40amps to charge my 2023 For F150 Lighting.

When will ANY OTHER EV get Tesla access? Seems like everyone involved just put a big stop all work on this after Rivian and Ford got it very early this year. I know, everyone is saying "Soon". Well that's been said for 4 months now.

I have the original A2Z NACS to CCS1 adapter and I am happy they improved the design with the pro but also a little annoyed with how quickly it came out. Kind of feels like I just purchased a prototype, especially since I do have the issue with the NACS latch Tom talked about. On my unit the latch works thankfully but it’s very tight and a little hard to get it locked in.

Mercedes EVs are not authorized to use Tesla Superchargers yet so no adapter will work. We're expecting it to happen sometime in the next few months, though. Any of the adapters in my video will work and are 100% safe to use, although when MB gets Supercharger access, they may have their own rules o which ones they want you to use.

One word of caution on using third party adapters. I have the original A2Z Typhoon adapter and I have used it about a dozen times with my R1T. The last time I used it, I received an error in my truck stating "Charging speed slower, Warm plug detected". I was only able to charge up to about 50kW. Ambient temperature was about 60 degrees F. I unplugged and re-started the session and I was able to charge at full speed. But then I started to get the error on both EA and RAN chargers. Initially I could just restart the session to get full speed, but eventually this stopped working and I am now only able to charge at about 50kW on all CCS chargers.
My R1T is now in service being repaired. The service center did not explicitly state that it was caused by the A2Z adapter, but they told me not to use a third party adapter in the future. They stated that the repair my cost as much as $5,000. They are covering the repair under warranty for me, but I imagine that in the future they may not.

      Hi Micheal,
This is very unlikely that the adapter caused this. We are very interested in knowing the outcome of your situation and repairs with Rivian. Truly, this is the first time we hear something like this despite having ten’s thousands of adapters being used worldwide everyday.
We have sent you an email.
      Thank you.
