Man, Perfect Dark was the bomb when I was a little kid... I think it was the second game I bought for my n64 right after Majora's Mask.... I can't remember now lol
Both Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark are kind of underappreciated compared to other Rare games (GoldenEye 007, Donkey Kong 64, etc.). To me, both games are still very fun and were very ambitious for their time. However, both games have the exact same gameplay issue: The frame rate. Perfect dark is still playable but if there's one Rare game that is screaming for a remake (no I'm not counting the Rare Replay remaster), it's Jet Force Gemini. Too bad that game came out before the expansion pak could have been compatible. Now it's time for the red squirrel to shine! A retrospective of my favorite N64 game! I CAN'T WAIT!
We are almost there! But 2023 will be a better year for all of us. Right? This game did predict the future! Well, it's not what we imagined back in the 1990s.☺
you really nailed the hype that existed for this game.. I had just moved to a remote island in the year 2000, so I left all of my friends (who were also big N64 nerds) behind.. I only had dial up, and it was dial up over the worlds worst satellite, and I only had access at school on the libraries computer... I remember stalking the internet religiously for any news on perfect dark.. especially IGN. Any video would take, usually 10+ hours, usually overnight, to download, and that was if I was lucky. Depending on the weather, the internet regularly dropped out, and you'd have to start over all again. Kids these days don't know the struggle..!! Anyway, when I finally got it, I mean, look, NO game could have lived up to my expectations at that point. And unfortunately, Perfect Dark was no exception. I still enjoyed it. But the entire time I was like.. "this is it? I've been waiting and obsessing for.. this?". The multiplayer was still fun and many games were had with friends, but they never reached the kind of awesome competitions or gaming parties we had with goldeneye. Still a nostalgic game for me.
Damn, I wish I could go back in time and discover those fantastic games all over again. I had so much fun during the N64/Playstation/Dreamcast era... Most of todays games are bigger and look way better (for the most part) but they often fail to keep me interested as much. I guess I've been spoiled by all the great games we had back then. :P
Played N64 and PSX games from the N64/PSX era to the mid 360/PS3. All the games in the PS2/OXB era were bad to me. Either the game had a good story but bad gameplay and/or controls, or it had good gameplay, but bad story and controls. The only games I played all the time on the OXB were StarWarz: BattleFront 1/2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, and StarWarz: Republic Commando
Right? it feels like the charm of games doesn't exist as much. They feel calculated and in it 100% to make money. And with "me too" gaming (where every new game just copies what the popular game is now without taking any risks) were stuck with a bunch of boring, safe blockbuster copying movies, I mean games, that are more concerned with a lack luster story and boring quick time events than unique game play and features....you also had to use you imagination a bit back then. Due to limitations, they would render a blob of pixels and call something and you'd just have to play along and pretend that lump of pixels was a key, or gun, or door, or car, or whatever ya know?
also micro transactions, DLC, and rushed launch dates (all focused on money) mean you're getting less features for more money. It feels like the heart has been ripped put and replaced with a calculator and a greedy business man with no passion for anything other than the bottom line. GoldenEye took 2 years to finish. Released way after the movie, missing the "hype sales" window. But did they care? Nope. They kept working to make a game they were proud of, and it still sold well and is still being played today. Now they rush a generic gameplay trend, slap a movie license on it, and shit it out around the time the movie releases. Disgusting.
I love Perfect Dark. Growing up it was my favourite game alongside GoldenEye 007. While I enjoyed playing Perfect Dark Zero, I really hated the changes to Joanna Dark and the story. I was so happy when Perfect Dark XBLA was released on the Xbox 360, and even happier when it was made playable on the Xbox One. I still play it to this day, it will always be my favourite game.
It's unfortunate these take so long, but damn are they worth the wait. This is easily the best retrospective series on Rare that exists, and is probably one of the best retrospectives around, period. Keep it up! Lookin' forward to Conker!
Glad you are back, really good and deep intel about the game, the vision and development cycle! I absolutely love PD, needed to import it because it was never released officially in germany but I played the crap out of it - totally worth it, a masterpiece!
I just start playing this game and must say it is amazing. Soundtrack, graphic and gameplay are 10/10, the only problem is framerate. Too bad this game come when N64 was at the end of his life and not many people play this game, including me back then.
Perfect Dark is my favourite game of all time (I do speedruns of it on my channel :) ). Shame PD Zero is terrible and the story contradicts a lot of the first game. Clearly made by a different team to the first who didn't give enough of a crap. That Bond-like opening is cool though. I'll give it that.
Great episode of your retrospective, like always! Let us hope that one day that Perfect Dark will make a return in some way, shape, or form! Looking forward to the next episode involving Conker.
wow, nice to know you're still alive and working, that being said, i was really hoping you would get into more of the minutia behind the breakdown and sale of Rare, what companies were formed by those who left, and what the particulars of the sale to MS were, what roll Ken Lobb played in it all, great series overall though, thanks
Every time one of these pops up it's both a pleasant surprise, but also a grim reminder. A reminder that I will have to wait about a year for another one...
Aaand here we are, in the fall of 2020 and waiting for the new Perfect Dark ´´ !! For some, the N64 game was our most beloved piece of childhood, and we'll never lose that :)
Fantastic job as always, and I can't believe how much information you have here that I didn't know before. Thanks so much for the hard work you put into these videos :)
Perfect dark was the only reason I bought a 360. The lack of it is why I never bought the xbox1. Maybe there's a thought to be had there. But I want it for the of instead.
I think the creators of Perfect Dark are already working for the next gen. Like the PS4 or Xbox one. I wonder when they going to make a seaquel of Perfect dark
I waited a long time for this, so long that I forgot all about it. Years later, today, a string of game videos and youtube side panel had me click a few interesting things until I saw someone with a 'History Of Rare' video which was around 6 minutes. For the love I have for the former Rare, I started checking some other 'history' videos and thought about my favorite FPS game Perfect Dark. Then, I remembered these series of videos that never got to that point, but I remember it was the best for the history on Rare and I decided to see if just - what if the Perfect Dark segment was finally made. To my surprise, this vid came out just 5 days ago and although I thought it would be a letdown due to how long it took, everything was on point here. I don't know why another game hasn't copied this game's formula. I just knew this would be a legendary FPS soaring off into the future, but messy circumstances prevented that from happening. I had a silly thought in the past and said that if I was a billionaire, I would make the original team an offer they couldn't refuse and bring them back to either continue PD or make one last great PD game. Thank you for the great video The Nostalgic Gamer.
I don't care how long it takes.. your videos are fucked up incredible. You're a genius. Please do Resident Evil 4... I NEED to know how that game managed to be so damn perfect!
It tried this back in the day and thought it was veyr advanced. But the fact I rented it and the fps was lower than I liked, I didn't play it again. BUT i remember it fondly because back then it was very innovative and gave strong impressions, as Goldeneye. Rare btw was top notch back then. Remind me of Rockstar Games and GTA IV. Talented and skilled.
Great video, I really can't wait for part 9 :D Also I like the fact how microsoft has in some way make some hindrance to rare's ip and products (big or small).
Interesting coincidence the video length of a commentary about a shooter game is the same as an ammuntion type (.30-06). Really enjoying this series! Possible movie/game in 2023? (year the game took place in)
12:43 - interesting, as my friends and i were in 5th or 6th grade around the time PD was originally released. I remember us in class whispering, being like, '...dude... you know what i'm gonna get in two days? ....PERFECT DARK!!', lol. None of us felt the 64 was at the end of its lifetime then, that is, until Halo came out the following year and blew us the hell away ;) pd has an always will be one of my original obsessions.
Please Rare, please port Perfect Dark to PC even if it's the original version. I know I can play it now with PC controls on a specialized emulator and hack new levels into, but I really want a proper PC port as well as a map editor for both singleplayer and multiplayer content and co-op support for custom SP missions of course.
Perfect Dark: A game with the most perfect and satisfying reload animations in history
And Perfect Dark FINALLY returns 😭❤
Perfect Dark is forever. :)
I never will understand why Microsoft bought rare if they will never use the properties...
And now for the real reason we're here, Conker.
Man, Perfect Dark was the bomb when I was a little kid... I think it was the second game I bought for my n64 right after Majora's Mask.... I can't remember now lol
Killer Instinct came back so anything's possible.
I bought a N64 expac for two games. Perfect Dark and Majora's Mask. I miss the N64 era of gaming so much.
You're giving me irrationnal hopes for a new Perfect Dark game in the spirit of the original one. Best game ever. Good job on this retrospective.
Both Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark are kind of underappreciated compared to other Rare games (GoldenEye 007, Donkey Kong 64, etc.). Now it's time for the red squirrel to shine! A retrospective of my favorite N64 game! I CAN'T WAIT!
Perfect Dark is one of the best games ever made. Hands Down! Your video on it is fantastic.
We are almost there! But 2023 will be a better year for all of us. Right? This game did predict the future! Well, it's not what we imagined back in the 1990s.☺
Wow perfect dark takes place in 2023 so hard to believe we are here
I completely forgot about this series. Welcome back.
Every in depth video about perfect dark is good and at the same time absolutely sad, I really want another game of Perfect dark while i live.
God I love Conker! Multiplayer mode is boss! Love running around as an evil teddy bear slicing up squirrels with samurai swords!
Finally. Its been 3 f*cking years.
This is by far the most exciting interesting documentary I’ve ever seen!
My most anticipated video on UA-cam is finally here. More people need to know of you fantastic work. Don't leave us for so long next time. :)

wow almost 3 years after part 7. cool to see more.
I'm always happy to see a Nostalgic Gamer video.
Holy jeezus. I didn't think this would actually be out this year!
Oh, I've looked forward to this ~
Very glad you're still making these. Very much so :)
Damn, I wish I could go back in time and discover those fantastic games all over again. I had so much fun during the N64/Playstation/Dreamcast era... HYPE!!! You're YT work is astounding man, regardless of time between releases recently, your hard work shows and it's vastly appreciated.
Lol, Perfect Dark literally came out just months before the PS2.
Watching this In 2023🤌🏾😂
Lol
👋 👍
I love Perfect Dark. Growing up it was my favourite game alongside GoldenEye 007. While I enjoyed playing Perfect Dark Zero, I really hated the changes to Joanna Dark and the story.

Awesome to see new stuff from you.:-) Perfect Dark is one of my all-time favourite games, and might be my favrouite FPS.
This game needs to be remade
It's unfortunate these take so long, but damn are they worth the wait. This is easily the best retrospective series on Rare that exists, and is probably one of the best retrospectives around, period.

You ARE still around! Awesome :)
WE DID IT
Please don't stop making videos bro!
How in godsname they put the hole game in just a 32mb cartridge is BEYOND ME!
PDZ didn't have a "modern" gameplay feel. Felt upgraded and downgraded at the same time. I still play PDZ just for the soundtrack and UA-cam gameplays
Yeah, I still play it too. Started to speedrun it :)
Great episode of your retrospective, like always! Let us hope that one day that Perfect Dark will make a return in some way, shape, or form! Looking forward to the next episode involving Conker.
Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together!
We're Still waiting on a True Perfect Dark follow up.
Thank you so much for continuing this great Retrospective!!
It's about time! I love your Rare Retrospective videos, but please don't take another 3 years to make part 9!
This was the first thing I ever bought with my own money earned at a job.
welcome back!
Yea so glad to see a new video. Now I wait another 3 years for Part 9
Good to see you with another part of the Rare Retrospective. Good luck with your next videos.
He's back!
still awesome has ever. Hope to see the conker and pinata soon.
really glad to finally see a continuation of this video series. well done!
I fell in Love with Perfect Dark.
then Perfect Dark: Zero, broke my Heart.
wow, nice to know you're still alive and working,
that being said, i was really hoping you would get into more of the minutia behind the breakdown and sale of Rare, what companies were formed by those who left, and what the particulars of the sale to MS were, what roll Ken Lobb played in it all,

Great video. Keep the Rare retrospectives coming!
Yes it's time. I've been waiting patiently for this.
Every time one of these pops up it's both a pleasant surprise, but also a grim reminder. A reminder that I will have to wait about a year for another one...
Excellent video, looking forward to the next part (hopefully it won't take 3 years this time).
You're back!!!

Yes
Yeah man, about time. Good job!
This game was fun
It's been a while for you but keep making these videos they're awesome.
This is amazing. Great work.
Fantastic job as always, and I can't believe how much information you have here that I didn't know before. Thanks so much for the hard work you put into these videos :)
Love your work guys and the game, want to know more about perfect dark! Interview the original team!
Perfect Dark was one of the few games that used a female protagonist without making it feel forced and motivated by political correctness.
Perfect dark was the only reason I bought a 360. The lack of it is why I never bought the xbox1. Maybe there's a thought to be had there. But I want it for the of instead.
YOUR ARE FINALLY BACK!!!!!!
kinda sucks that part 9 isn't uploaded yet :(
What?? I've just realize that the narrator's voice in the PD promo is the same voice of Sgt. Cortez (TimeSplitters 2 and 3)
Great video guys 👍🏾👍🏾
Am I the only one that thought this was the part 8 of a perfect dark only series?
Lol
Awesome video. This deserves more views! Thanks.
I think the creators of Perfect Dark are already working for the next gen. Like the PS4 or Xbox one. I wonder when they going to make a seaquel of Perfect dark
Wow! Welcome back! :)
if perfect dark would've been tomorrow never dies it would've been amazing. but I love perfect dark also. its just not as fun to fight against aliens.
I remember watching the last part the night after i broke up with my first boyfriend. Now to see this three years later, so surreal.
a sigh from the past is always useful to see how much we've grown up

was a good one
great video

FINALLYY!!!!
It'd be nice to see a Treyarch, Bungie or Bethesda documentary

never noticed the pynchon reference. great author.
Video starts at 1:56
Perfect dark got leaked for 2018
Fantastic as always!
Wasn't the name Joanna Dark supposed to be similar to "Joanne D'Arc," as in Joan of Arc? Also, wasn't that why she has red hair?
Can't wait for part 9 in 2018.
3 years later... holy shit nice
Nice 2 see u back dude
