It's so amazing to watch these behind the scenes videos for Perfect Dark . I was 12 years old that summer of 2000 and I was the biggest fan. I still have my blue PD folder left somewhere in my basement. I made drawings of Joanna Dark and I even made magazines. I learned basically every single piece of dialogue by heart and I made my mom and grandmother rewatch the clips over and over. Obviously they didn't enjoy the story as much as I did. To afford the game, which was very expensive for a 12 year-old, I helped my grandmother wash the dishes, do the laundry, clean the house, etc. Needless to say she was extremely generous with the wage. June 29th 2000 was indeed one of the greatest days of my childhood. One year later we even made a 1 year anniversary chocolate cake! So yeah, thank you so much for a wonderful game and for being a part of one of my dearest childhood memories.
@@marbistacio Me and my grandma made a cake with the PD logo on it, I invented my best friend over, we ate the cake and went upstairs to play the game. Good times, good times!
I had never played this game before. I find it pretty crazy how you actually have to think and look around when you play this game. I was surprised. No map, no objective marker. Just a small description of your objectives and a tip from Carrington. It makes you feel that much more fulfilled when you figure out how to beat every level. Games nowadays just tell you exactly what to do.
No... what mad the game was the secrets, the wide variety of gun features that changed the gameplay a lot, and hidden weapons among the levels you can get.
Perfection? Dunno about that. B movie Sci-fi conspiracy plot in a game that was pushing it's respective hardware to the limit causing frequent lag spikes, especially in areas with tons of light sources. Also that truly horrible blur effect anytime someone punched or sedated you. I love Perfect Dark but lets not call it perfection out of Nostalgia.
Kira Reilly still up to these days, i havent seen a game with a perfect hit detection like perfect dark has, not even COD o Battlefield have that nice experience .
And there you can see they've always had feminism and negroracism in video games. Gen z thinking they invented something or the trumptard counterpart thinking this is new.
I loved the N64 look of Joanna, she had that down-to-earth girl-next-door look going on, her voice compliments it so well. And now that they mentioned it she really looks like Winona Ryder. Shame they changed it..
I love the N64 models in general, they’re so retro and blocky and I love it, the way the faces are just spread across the like 6 polygons is so hilarious and amazing.
I don't understand why this video uses footage from some remaster when they are actually talking about the development of the original N64 version; that's like talking about the development of the original 1987 version of "DuckTales", but using footage from the 2017 version.
I played this game as a teenager when it first came out, now I regularly play this with my teenage daughter because of the remake on xbox. It is great to share this game with her.
Perfect dark is one of my all times favorites! I was 18 years old when it came out on n64 and was blown away by it! 16 years later and Im still playing it as part of the rare replay collection!
Perfect Dark, ESPECIALLY the re-release, was, well...perfect. I remember devoting so much time to that game, especially that HD re-release, that I was just floored when I found out I was, quite by accident, ranked 3rd IN THE WORLD in the comprehensive rankings of the game. That includes single-player AND multiplayer. The craziest part was...I literally could care less about rankings. Hell...I’m a game designer now in real life...but I owe so much of that to RARE and this game. It was so good...I invested the time NOT meaning to get that good. It happened by accident, out of sheer love of the game some folks designed. It’s not often you find out only two people on earth are possibly slightly better than you at something. I owe that feeling, and maybe my career, to those folks at RARE...🙂
I can't put in words the amount of love I have for this game. Seeing all this amazing people talking while listening again to all this fab tunes makes my heart jump with warm feelings. The emotion, the feelings are real, pure joy and happiness and good memories. Thank you all team!
I love the voice acting in Perfect Dark so much, I’ve been learning impressions of them for quite a while and can do Carrington, Cassandra, Trent, and almost all the scientists, Grimshaw, bits of Joanna, the guards, and probably a couple of others. I hope if they game comes back they do more random voice clips for everyone that sounds like the old ones.
One of the best shooters ever and one of my favorite games ever. I wish they would make more shooters like this instead of all the generic shooters. A shooter with an actually story and fun to play.
This brings back so many memories 😩 this came out when I was 5. My brothers and Dad would play it and I started playing it when I was little older too. I looooved the laptop gun and the farsight!! They’re so fun to use. These memories will forever be so precious. Games these days don’t hit the same 😅 thank you Rare!!!!

I love hearing these neat little tidbits of info. I haven't even played any of the PD games and still found this interesting. Please, do make more of these.
this, goldeneye 64, killer instinct, and donkey kong country are my childhood! cheers rare, for making my younger years a little happier, and having made the impact that you have in the videogame industry. seriously though, I've been through a lot health wise as a child, and being able to tune out from the hunger of pre-op fasting, and the stresses of neurosurgery by firing up perfect dark and shredding poor hapless simulants with a pair of maulers in combat simulator, well..... let's just say that they were some really dark times, and I wish no child would ever have to go through it, as I struggled to get through it myself. ps, any chance of the core/vengeance raring it's head again for xbox one/play anywhere? as from what I've heard of the storyline, I'm actually quite intrigued
Been playing through, for the thousandth time, this fantastic game and it still holds up even in 2023. It's such a timeless classic that even today still exists in the shadow of the behemoth that is Goldeneye. It really took the foundation that was Goldeneye and built on top of it. Still to this day I think about the Laptop Gun whenever I play a shooter, it felt that great to use. The story and gameplay is so timeless. Rare really made a classic that will be remembered by fans well into the future. I recently shared this game with my nephew and watching him experience it was such a fantastic thing to experience for me. Reminded me of that bit of joy I would feel when playing it as a child. So many great memories getting friends together for some versus matches.
ONE OF THE MOST FUN GAMES OF MY CHILDHOOD..EVEN THOUGH IT TOOK A DECADE TO BEAT..LOLI JUST HOPE RARE MAKES A SEQUEL OR A REMAKE OR SOMETHING!! LOVE THE FRANCHISE!!
Literally less than an hour until 2024 at the time of this writing, 30 years old, and I've loved this game since I was a kid with an N64. I have the 360 version on my Xbox One. I love it.
Thank you for making this! Perfect Dark was such a great game, and I've been playing the XBLA version for years. Please consider making another sequel.
My copy of PD has Jo's facial texture of a long-faced redhead. I think I remember reading there was a last minute change or something before the box art was released.
I've watched the Making of Perfect Dark video a few times and am watching this one again as well. It's interesting to learn the history behind what is in my opinion the greatest game ever made. I wish games like this were still made today. Even a complete remake (not just an HD remaster) with all features and content from the original but with updated controls, an option to aim down sights instead of using crosshairs for manual aiming, a radial quick menu, and added features like counter-op with an AI Joanna would be a breath of fresh air in an industry dominated by FPSs with two-weapon systems and objectives that boil down to following the crosshair, pressing the action button, killing everyone, and surviving for so long. The greatest FPS moments for me are playing missions with objectives that require thought and increase with difficulty, carrying multiple weapons with limited ammo each and choosing which one to switch to and when, playing MP and challenges against bots, strategically using secondary functions, and unlocking things like cheats and multiplayer characters. Modern FPSs generally don't offer these at all. Other great moments are offered by some or all modern FPSs - picking up and trying a new gun for the first time, using optional stealth until I get caught, choosing how to approach encounters, etc. - but the other things are sorely lacking, and modern FPSs feel incomplete without bots and unlockables outside of online MP. Heavily scripted campaigns with QTEs and generic objectives aren't very engaging.
I recently started replaying the game again on the N64 and I have to say it still holds up really well! The only thing that's a little hard to get over are the poor frames. Really fun hearing about these behind the scenes facts. I never knew Joanna's face was based on Winona Ryder. I guess that's the reason why Joanna's face was changed in the xbox version.
Thank you guys for making this series. perfect dark Zero and The original is by far my favorite first person shooter games of all time. Perfect Dark is Forever and it really happened. Crazy
I remember sneaking in to my dads room Christmas one year because while he was asleep. He got me this and I fired it up with the rca cables hooked up to a vcr. It was the best game at the time by far. i knew it immediately
Thank you for everything guys. It's sad that I have never owned a Microsoft console and have no access to your recent games, though. I guess a HD release on pc is not realistic either (license?) But still, thanks. Perfect dark was THE sleepover game and I don't know of a game with better and more customization. I remember my friend always used Elvis body and the head of this one npc that has a similar stressed out face like max in max Payne 1
@@Actraiser1337 Ah got it. Well maybe PD is part of the deal Microsoft and Nintendo got. You kinda have a way of playing PD on the PC at the moment if you're subscribed to Gamepass Ultimate thus playing it in cloud but a native port would be better
Please bring Perfect Dark to the Nintendo Switch 😔 the original, the remake/remaster, I don’t care which one. I owned, played and liked both versions… but it would be nice to play it on my Switch 😢
Watching this was awesome! I really love how you guys "slap together anything" to make this gem and how everything around you inspired things in it. It just goes to show that you don't need a ton of DEEP THINKING and overly complicated stuff to form something fun. Also the reason behind the cheese is cool XD thank you for making Perfect Dark! Now....pretty please can you ask Microsoft to allow PD (the xbla remake) on Nintendo Switch (and PC for preservation)? and not through streaming? Pleeeeaaasseee?
+Andreas Specht The exceedingly lovely XBLA remaster is the version in Rare Replay - and these videos are continuing a series premiered in Rare Replay :)
+Rare Ltd - The remaster is really good but this video is talking about the faces used in the original so it should show the original faces that they are talking about. The footage does not match the commentary basically. Also an epic fail from rare replay is that it should have a totally new set of achievements for perfect dark but it instead uses the the 360 version of the game.
Awesome video! I really like how you added Air Base X at the end. I was wondering, fix some of the bugs on the Xbox Live version of the game please? These are... -Floating characters (check Grimshaw's feet at the Carrington Institute, Joanna's with the Bombspy at Chicago, and more). -Manual aim control being awkward -Cassandra saying, "You won't shoot me, foolish child" to Mr. Blonde at one of the bonus missions -One of the female heads in Combat Simulator having a male voice -DMC and AR53 having a weird shot effect in first and third person (the blast from them aren't connected to the barrel) -Simulants won't use the PP9i -Joanna's voice sounding off during her disguise training after receiving the cloaking device from Grimshaw Could you bring in or bring back... -All the heads for your character in Combat Simulator -AR34's original color -More control schemes and remove the Duty Calls one (I want Perfect Dark, not Call of Duty.) -The option to switch to the old graphics by using the menu -Two more classic maps from Goldeneye 64 like Archives and Bunker (they could be called Office and Base respectively) -The original Combat Boost effect as an option I think there was a few more, but that's what I'll list. Please make it happen.
Old but gold! I think that a HD remastered version of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark for the PC, PS4, X1 and Switch would be a great idea! And yes, I know that 'Rare Replay' includes Perfect Dark and Zero, but it's only available on Xbox One. Please RARE!
One of my fav games of all times for sure. The graphics, the music, the gameplay, Rare did that. I wish that a movie could be made of Perfect Dark. Charlize Theron could play Joanna. The movie Aeon Flux always makes me think about Perfect DarkDOWN SOUTH!!!
Perfect Dark is way ahead of its time its a Masterpiece of FPS game with great Graphics, Gameplay, Music, Story and Characters, my favorite version is the Nintendo 64 one and still have the Cartridge
It was always funny to me how Rare games used their staff to do voices instead of hiring actors, and all their sound effects were stock, royalty-free sounds.
I want to know about the goldeneye/PD enemy AI! The way they move and act seems to facilitate an action game where you can dodge attacks and stuff. What was the idea behind it? I'll probaly never get an answer but I'm so curious
Brilliant video guys! Unseen64 did a cool retrospective on PD core/vengeance the other day have you seen it? A missed opportunity for sure. Any chance of seeing some more of it on your channel in the future or is it a bit of a sore subject?
hey Rare, when you released the first 1.0 copy of perfect dark N64 how did you fix the memory overflow bug... you and your team released a 1.1 cartridge that fixed the bug.... i just want to know thats all.
Was the promo outfit that Jo seems to wear in all material outside the game ACTUALLY available to use in the game itself? as a kid I never understood why she had a different outfit on. Was it actually unlockable in some way?

A new Perfect Dark would be so awesome! Can't wait for Sea of Theives!
-Manual aim control being awkward
-Cassandra saying, "You won't shoot me, foolish child" to Mr. Blonde at one of the bonus missions
-One of the female heads in Combat Simulator having a male voice
-DMC and AR53 having a weird shot effect in first and third person (the blast from them aren't connected to the barrel)
-Simulants won't use the PP9i
-Joanna's voice sounding off during her disguise training after receiving the cloaking device from Grimshaw
Could you bring in or bring back...
-All the heads for your character in Combat Simulator
-AR34's original color
-More control schemes and remove the Duty Calls one (I want Perfect Dark, not Call of Duty.)
-The option to switch to the old graphics by using the menu
-Two more classic maps from Goldeneye 64 like Archives and Bunker (they could be called Office and Base respectively)
-The original Combat Boost effect as an option
I think there was a few more, but that's what I'll list. Please make it happen.
I think I actually remember that elvis bug still rarely very rarely happening on deep impact and I’d play for hours in denial that I had to restart
I always thought that the President looked like the late Richard Biggs. Good to know that he was a friend of one of the developers.
Perfect dark is a old favie of mine I miss it and I remember when I had crush on Joanna lol
I love this! Rare is the best 😎
I'm going to have to dig my N64 out again!!
Me, who has watched the video 48 times: "yes"
Hahah amazing to hear these voices again!
If we ever see another Perfect Dark game, I would like for the villain to be voiced by one of the Doctor Who doctors.
It's Xmas eve 2020 and we are having a PD party tonight!
Thank you so much for making these videos. 10 year old me is over the moon!
Awesome to finally find out what the cheese was for!
Perfect Dark Remastered on Steam with online multiplayer = instant buy, i loved it on my N64 but it deserves to be immortalized on steam.
Why only Steam? Not all of us like to use DRM platforms, it should also get a GoG release.
I still play the game from time to time.
I wanna reset life and work for Rare in the 90's. My first play through is garbage.
I want to know about the goldeneye/PD enemy AI! The way they move and act seems to facilitate an action game where you can dodge attacks and stuff. What was the idea behind it? I'll probaly never get an answer but I'm so curious
12:17 funniest thing ever
I am today years old when I found out that was Miyamoto the entire time!
Brilliant video guys! Unseen64 did a cool retrospective on PD core/vengeance the other day have you seen it? A missed opportunity for sure. Any chance of seeing some more of it on your channel in the future or is it a bit of a sore subject?
The sound track to this game is straight 🔥🔥
She is back baby!!
🙌 Been waiting on Jo's return! I still kind of liked Zero, but I don't count that as Joanna Dark
Please bring Rare replay to the switch
Nintendo would need Microsoft's permission to do so.
hey Rare, when you released the first 1.0 copy of perfect dark N64 how did you fix the memory overflow bug... you and your team released a 1.1 cartridge that fixed the bug.... i just want to know thats all.
If you guys are still around, any chance of a perfect dark for PC? Only reason I even bought the 360 was perfect dark.
Was the promo outfit that Jo seems to wear in all material outside the game ACTUALLY available to use in the game itself? as a kid I never understood why she had a different outfit on. Was it actually unlockable in some way?
I still think there are secrets we don't know about Perfect Dark, I wouldn't be surprised if they never get found.
