Instead the writers entreat us to another trite Jim-and-Pam-really-really-truly-love-each-other scene. Should have kept the two unmarried until the show was threatened with cancellation.
@@hd-xc2lz Not true, it’s about context. Jim was confused about the situation because he didn’t say anything negative to Pam’s father like “Yeah you should get a divorce” or something like that where he’s actively trying to get Pam’s father to divorce, he only talked to him about how much he loved Pam. So there was that disconnect as to why that conversation somehow lead to Pam’s parent’s divorcing. And plenty of couples don’t mention every single detail in their conversations.
Divorce goes back several generations for both myself and my wife's family. Thus far we've got 18 years under our belt and still going. She's my best friend. Oh we have nights where we fight, where we don't like each other, but we always come back to the commitment we made to one another. Marriage takes work people, can't always rely on feelings. As Ruth Graham once said...(paraphrasing) a good marriage is the union of two good forgivers. It's totally worth the work. As a consequence my kids grow up with a mom and dad who love each other, even on the bad days.
My wife and I came from families that had very few divorces and lots of long marriages. We got married when I was in the Army and had to attend mandatory counseling sessions with the base Chaplain. Met weekly for 6-8 weeks and discussed topics like communication, how to fight fairly, etc. Biggest one was to not go to bed mad, resolve any issues even if you had to stay up all night. And no hanging on to old grievances to big back up in future arguments. This year will be 52 years together.
I love it when Andy thinks pam and jim are reviewing the movie they were watching and Andy just thinks that they are thinking of stuff way over his head.
"what did he tell my dad and at what point is he going to tell that to me?" What she wasn't considering is that she isn't her dad and the same thing can mean different things to different people.
I haven't ever actually watched the office. Will eventually, but haven't yet. One thing I will say that I love about the show is how they actually want it to look like a real reality tv show (which is super weird to wrap my brain around). They don't just film the emotional scenes like they would normally. They have it so the cameramen are hiding, so it gives the illusion that we are watching a real conversation, not one meant for the camera. It's really neat. One of my favorite shows, modern family, tries to do this. They have the scenes where they are sitting down talking to the audience. And they have scenes where they glance at the camera. They just don't go the extra mile. In modern family, it almost feels like they are just breaking the 4th wall. In the office, they clearly set out to make it feel like the camera is a part of the show. A character of its own. It's super meta, and it works so unbelievably well. It does a great job at making these characters feel real, and have lives outside the show. And are not just actors playing a role.
the whole point of the office is that someone is making a documentry at dunder mifflin so the way they did it was perfect. i personally think they do it in a much better way than modern family as they address that the camera is there in ordinary scenes whilst modern family only uses it in the interviews.
One of my absolute favorite moments is when Pam talks to camera about suspecting Dwight and Angela and later we see a camera man excitedly running up to Pam and trying to catch her eyes with the camera because he isn't supposed to talk, and she notices and they have a lil moment of plotting and joy together when they see its true.
Interesting thing about the divorce statistic: Yes 50% end in divorce, but that figure is skewed by people who're on their second and third marriages. People who marry for the first time are less likely to get a divorce (something like 20%? I don't recall). But after your first marriage, you're way more likely to get divorced in followup marriages. Sad, but for first time marriages it gives a little hope.
Incredibly happy that both Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski told the writers specifically that they would not do the story line where Jim kisses Cathy. It would have broken my heart and made me furious if they introduced that story arc.
Yeah, that would've felt like such a betrayal of their characters. I don't even mean just the emotions, like it just doesn't feel like something Jim would do.
I didn’t even know that the writers had planned that… But yeah, that would’ve been a total “Fk this show” moment. i’m glad that John and Jenna realized that that would break all of our hearts
i’m going through a breakup right now and this just hit different. my ex never felt this way about me the way jim loves pam, and if i’m being honest with myself i don’t think i did either
Sounds like an important thing to know about your relationship. But to be honest I feel like people love differently. Some can get together for ever at 20 I have such friends and they are pure souls. I can't imagine this for myself, I cannot promise endless love, but these feelings are also valid.
I remember watching this when it aired. When Jim said 50% of marriages end in divorce, so it was hers or mine, I literally fell outta my chair and almost passed out laughing.
"my kids are going to be right about that. They almost weren't, because the writers were looking for ways to force tension into the show towards the end, but fortunately they got over that phase"
Wow... this is really good scene. Anyone who met that special person in his/her life and can then compare with other relationships or feelings he/her had, will do appreciate it. You sometimes think that you love or loved someone and then suddenly you meet someone who makes you - sometimes even without trying, just by existing - to feel all those things 10 times stronger.
I saw this scene a few days ago when my brother-in-law (huge office fan) and I remember this scene the most. When Pam explains why her dad is leaving and what Jim said to initiate that left me confused because I assumed most people felt that with their partners. When my wife is gone and comes home I get really excited, you know the feeling when a dog gets excited that you're back - just like that. I thought this was normal and apparently it's really not. A lot of couples are only together for the sake of avoiding loveliness and that's rough.
This is fascinating. My wife and I use the sort of logic to compare our marriages to other peoples. Not to judge them necessarily but to be thankful for what we do have. Marriage isn’t easy and it’s not supposed to be.
While this is whole sequence is incredibly sweet, authentic and perfectly acted, it's also clear to me that I'll never have a love like this - making the tears which came to me while watching this a mix of a warmed heart and a broken one.
Someone needs to hear this- relationships this pure do not happen on accident. A good marriage takes work- and both need to be committed to digging deep and solidifying the foundation of the life they build upon. good, healthy marriages don’t happen every day, so when you see one, it truly is amazing! ❤
That feeling is one of the hardest things to let go of. It leaves you almost love drunk when it's gone wanting to chase after that feeling just to bask in the glow once more. I never really got why people would do certain things out of love or how any movie or show would idealize love until I felt it for the first time. I'm sad we didn't work out, but I am so glad that I know what I am looking for now and I know I am going to find that feeling again one day.
I love this girl just like that. Even though we split up in 2017, I still think of her every single day and it has never been the same with anyone. I pray that God will give me peace about it because I truly think she was my soul mate. I love you Teri and I hope you are happy and doing well!
That she could think Jim would say something to make her father separate from her mother is absurd. And to not put the onus of what happened on the person who made the choice.
@@elizaharrison9405 I don't care to put myself in her shoes. She was being (written as) ridiculous. She THOUGHT Jim said something to make her father leave her mother. It was stupid. Not the episode but her irrational reaction to what her father told her. You don't have to agree with me. I don't try and police people's thoughts. My initial comment is my perception. YOU are here presenting as if my perception is wrong. So stop.
i think Pam's reaction is pretty realistic. She asked Jim to talk to her dad and he decided to leave her mom after the conversation. Of course she wants to know what Jim said that had such a huge impact. Also Jim's reaction of not knowing what he said has a more natural feel to it then " Well Pam , i told your dad how you are ( insert cheezy prose here)".
I worked with someone who I felt the same way Jim felt about Pam. Even on the worst days, having her around made everything significantly better. Same exact sense of humor. She was the reason I even decided to watch The Office (her favorite show). Watching it cemented this feeling even further. And like with The Office, there came a time where I needed to leave for the same reasons Jim left Scranton for the first time. Except reality doesn't exactly have the happy ending that television does. In reality, you go through all of your savings through the next two years while you struggle to find employment and never see them again.
Divorce also causes trauma or children and has been linked to poorer life outcomes later as well. Don't assume the grass is always greener on the other side. And I was raised in an extremely toxic and violent married household.
I'm in my 37th year of a relationship, soon to be 34 years of marriage. Our almost 23 yr old twins both say we have ruined their lives because they can't ever expect to be as happy as their parents are. The truth is, we just got lucky, and then we have worked on building luck into a life of love and decency. We started dating when I was 22 and she was 19. I turn 60 next year. I watch this clip often to be reminded of what young love felt like. It feels a lot now like it did then, only I am more aware of how lucky I am.
It's the fact that Jim honestly didn't know what he told her dad because for him was something normal. Awesome.

Jim and Pam is probably my favorite love story in anything I’ve ever watched. It’s so beautiful and real, hard to imagine it’s just acting. ❤❤❤
Love isn't something that just happens. It takes effort and is built over the years.
It's not hard to love people, it's hard to stay in love with them.
Wow... this is really good scene. Anyone who met that special person in his/her life and can then compare with other relationships or feelings he/her had, will do appreciate it. You sometimes think that you love or loved someone and then suddenly you meet someone who makes you - sometimes even without trying, just by existing - to feel all those things 10 times stronger.
Enough to make a grown man cry
Jim's comment about Pam's parents divorce is easily my favourite Jim quote.
Classic Jim quote.
i think this is one of my favorite tv moments ever
Me in serious situations: 0:38😅
"was it my fault?.... yeah"... slays me for all the right reasons
0:55 i mean, technically pam, he's not going to say it to you. he's going to say it to the guy that dates your daughter.
Pam was so often waiting to be disappointed by Jim.
Andy getting mad at the end without context is🤣
how is kinda underatedly one of the best written episodes
Jenna is such a great actress
What an incredible line "Love affairs look different to the people inside them." I hope the writers are freaking proud of their work.
WOW, that is touching. Kudos to the actors.
Pam looks so beautiful in this episode!!!!
Such beautiful writing. The Office is the best!!
When you're kid you assume your parents are soulmates. My kids are gonna be right about that 2:16
"It was going to be her parents or my parents"
Jim crazy 🤣🤣
That was beautiful. Their relationship is truly the only thing i care about on this show.
She truly is a fine actress.
This show will literally never get old to me my kids will absolutely watch this show
jenna fischer really was amazing as Pam
This is fascinating. My wife and I use the sort of logic to compare our marriages to other peoples. Not to judge them necessarily but to be thankful for what we do have. Marriage isn’t easy and it’s not supposed to be.
I've felt that way about my wife since we were 13. That was over 30 yrs ago.
that is so sweet
While this is whole sequence is incredibly sweet, authentic and perfectly acted, it's also clear to me that I'll never have a love like this - making the tears which came to me while watching this a mix of a warmed heart and a broken one.
the documentary-style storytelling in The Office & Parks & Recreation were so unique and insightful.
Best TV couple ever written
They were a TV couple you really wished were real life. What a wonderful touching scene --both acting and script.
Does not get any better than this.
I love Andy in the background this whole episode trying to relate Jim and Pam’s statements to the movie they saw. 😂😂😂
Pam’s dad is a tool. He says he never felt strong love for his wife but then goes straight to dating a woman his daughter’s age!
This was sooo beautiful and i just cant get over those lines!!!!!!❤
In my opinion, this is one of the best romances in TV history...
Someone needs to hear this- relationships this pure do not happen on accident. A good marriage takes work- and both need to be committed to digging deep and solidifying the foundation of the life they build upon. good, healthy marriages don’t happen every day, so when you see one, it truly is amazing! ❤
Best. Character. Couple. Ever.
I haven't seen the complete show and I saw this scene for the first time, literal goosebumps when I heard what Jim said to Pam's Dad
😊❤
Dude Andy freaking killed me at the end of the episode 💀🤣🤣
This scene always makes me cry
Did you ever think of cheating? Ik some males do it even tho they love a girl
this one always makes me cry to this day
That smile.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah"
❤
That she could think Jim would say something to make her father separate from her mother is absurd. And to not put the onus of what happened on the person who made the choice.
@@elizaharrison9405 of course I can. Of course I can.
So stop.
@@Wendyficent1 lol, she deleted her comments
I liked this scene but I also thought her reaction was odd, given she kind of begged Jim to talk to her father in the first place.
i think Pam's reaction is pretty realistic. She asked Jim to talk to her dad and he decided to leave her mom after the conversation. Of course she wants to know what Jim said that had such a huge impact.
Also Jim's reaction of not knowing what he said has a more natural feel to it
then " Well Pam , i told your dad how you are ( insert cheezy prose here)".
This perfectly shows how guys react in relationship
I'm not crying. Just washing my eyes from the inside, out.
They make pam such a villian towards the end but Jenna and John's acting never misses a day. Both are so great.
She is a villan since the beginning
@@pedropascueto7394 She wasn't, she just wanted to be a good jedi and free the slaves, but It was the emperor who seduced her to the dark side.
Best seperation ever? I mean, it revealed how much in love these two are, so it kinda balances each other out.
0:20 why does it look and sound like he’s playing an elaborate joke?😂
Wish my parents had gotten divorced when I was little instead of putting us through all the trauma.
Divorce also causes trauma or children and has been linked to poorer life outcomes later as well. Don't assume the grass is always greener on the other side. And I was raised in an extremely toxic and violent married household.
Andy is a mood 💀😂
Very touching scene
God, this is the one of my favorite moment of Pam and Jim🥲
This and Up are the 2 things that will make me cry 100% of the time in under 3 minutes
Such a powerful scene and one of my favorite Jim-Pam moments.
Yes. With my husband since I was 24 but still together 17 years later. I feel so lucky, now more than ever.
arguably the best series ever.
