Theres alot of pyrite down there. Majority of it is replacement of organic matter and theyre typically within the shales. Other associated lithology is varieties of chert which eats up bits. Thats basically silica.

I'm a retired assayer and have assayed samples from Texas. Hard rock. There are some pretty amazing deposits there. Copper/silver/gold. Had a lotta of fun with those Texans. The problem is most of Texas is privately owned (if not all), and they take great pride in keeping their land prestine. I don't really blame them for not wanting their property prowled around by a big mining company that's used to bust and go.Thanks for the memories Jess!

I'm constantly being pestered to sell some inherited property that has some oil under it. I refuse to do it because I don't want a bunch of pollution from drilling and possibly fracking on that plot and adjacent areas. I'd get a little short term money for a long term mess.

@@alfredmolison7134Must not be in Texas. You can not stop oil drilling in Texas and they don't have to drill on your land to get it. You might stop the drilling pad, but they will just pool your land with your neighbors and drill from your neighbor to get your oil.

What you said about gold being deep in the Permian basin region is spot on. Rigs will occasionally see flecks of gold coming up from way down there, but just as you said...virtually impossible to extract any of it in meaningful quantities. I have a piece of core sample with a couple tiny bits of gold showing, the desire to crush it down and pan that gold is strong.
As for that center bit, that's the Llano uplift, caused by a pluton. Some really ancient rock visible there on the surface now, and that's where most of the gold comes from.
Out west, in the area just north of Presidio, there used to be a rather successful silver and lead mine. Core sampling shows that there's still a lot left to mine, but they're waiting for the price to go up before going into full production. Lajitas is close to there, known for its mercury mines in the form of cinnabar.
There's no shortage of legend and lore west of the Pecos about lost gold mines, the most famous is probably Ben Sublett's lost gold located somewhere between Pecos and the Guadalupe mountains. It's right on that line where you'd expect gold to be...though nobody has found any yet.

I tracked down las almagres and found a gold mine in the area on a creek on private property..I found a large quartz vein heading to a small bluff..followed it to a mine that had a giant granite boulder rolled on top of entrance .it would take more than ten men to remove it..it had been there for at least 250 years by the oak trees growing out and around it..the Spaniards or Mexican miners probably left it that way to return to it..no body came back but I found it..what was behind that round boulder is another story..but I haven't worked since 1998. Right in the area you mentioned on your map..lost mines exist..they are out there..go find them...

Nearly every creek, river, ditch or lake in the Llano uplift area has some gold.

In TX on State owned land you are suppose to have a permit to prospect. The llano River used to be permitted up at all public access areas. You would just need permission from the permit holder. Most permit holders belong to the Round Rock GPAA chapter. I do not have contact info.
Dredges with 5" or smaller suction nozzles are allowed.
      Simple rules
No spills in water or on land
No digging near bridges or low water crossings
      No undercutting banks
      No trespassing
There is also a pay to dig on the Llano river 5 miles N of Kingsland TX on hwy 1431
It's called Longs Fish and digging. You should be able to google it.
He has a 1000 acres on the Llano river with a couple of small creeks. You can find gold there. He also allows arrowhead digging.

Nice find! I found a few specks here in the San Angelo area. Trying to get an idea of what made all of the river rock deposits on top of these mesas, as there's a lot of dirty quartz with decomposed sulfide voids in it as well as hematite and magnetite. Good evidence of gold bearing materials were deposited here at some point a long time ago, back when a river traversing this area went west instead of east. There's a possibility that one of those old riverbeds littered with placer gold might still be preserved with minimal overburden somewhere out here, could be a few feet or a hundred feet underground, but the hard part is finding it.

The Llano RIver, actually take a look at Honey Creek where it enters the Llano. On a map, if you follow the dry beds up to the lode, and back down the other side you can see several rivers and creeks with the right names eg Silvermine Creek etc. The mine on Honey creek produced the only offical bar of gold produced in Texas.. If you look up the metal detecting clubs in the area, one of them has quite a few examples of finds from the Llano and around Texas. I was kinda surprised once I found them. I have found a few flakes, out of the Colorado River at the Narrows. That is what got me started, it was totally by accident, noticed out of the corner of my eye. Ive been hooked ever since. If you look at the historical marker at honey creek, between Marble Falls and Lllano on 71, it talks about gold. All rivers in Texas are public access, but not that one, haha. My suggestion is to visit Dans Fish and Dig nearby, they are cheap prices for camping and digging, and even have some questionable cabins (I always camp at the very last spot. If you go, get it, trust me) Very friendly and beautiful place when there is water flowing. If you do enough research you will find that gold has been found all around, typically in smaller quantities, but some pickers too. The most compelling old tale I know of is a lost indian silver mine that is likely in the area, b/c there are caves everywhere. I had to move back to Lubbock to take care of my mother, but I visit and go prospecting or arrowhead hunting about every other month all around there. My number is 5122931045, if ya'll ever feel like planning or discussing. I typically keep my metal detector and pans in my truck, so Im always down for an adventure. I am still learning but who isn't. Finally see Texas on the map. Marble Falls is basically the ancient skeleton of the huge volcano that shapes most of the area and another one was right under St. Edwards University in Austin. Kinda odd b/c the main fault line runs N to S along I35 Dallas to San Antonio. Also, I've also heard of finding Diamonds around, but very rare. From what I understand they are to found in the cone edge, from when the top cone blows out of the volcano. Good luck and. thank you for finally putting Texas on the map.

Its surface con- tains buried hills, depressions, and irregular reentrants, and its flanks slope gently away from the crest on bo*h sides. The area covered by this report includes the highest part of the atoll, the top of which is 3,738 to 5,900 feet below sea level and about 6,150 to 7,900 feet below the ground surface
