Hi Chris any chance you can do a video of your drumming for Sultans of Swing 91/92. It's my favourite piece of drumming ever, particularly the first half 🙏 Best wishes Daniel
When the Calling Elvis album came out, I thought that the opening song of that recording was really different to anything I ever heard at that moment. Although I already was a musician myself, my musical knowledge was too limited to deeply analyse and properly understand the piece. I found it odd and didn't exactly love it, but I could feel it was a really good piece of rock music and therefore I enjoyed it so much. Three decades later, I absolutely love the piece, which I often listen to, and I have finally understood that Dire Straits created a true masterwork. This song has a soul and a sound absolutely unique like nothing I ever heard before. Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar sound blended with the rest of the band so well and with him in the band, I think Dire Straits absolutely reinvented itself. Everybody knows that Mark has always been a wonderful soloist, and Alan's keyboard textures and piano arrangements are simply perfect and pivotal for the sound of the band. But Calling Elvis brought us another genius, an absolutely wonderful player that in my opinion, could play as creatively as Mark. And I really mean that. The amount of melodic ideas that Paul presents in just that song is simply overwhelming. Nothing I ever heard before or after that album resembles that piece, and for me, the song Calling Elvis is almost a new genre in itself. Chris, what can you tell us about the piece? What did you think when you heard if for the first time? Thank you so much.
thanks Chris ! i was a very young drummer on that "on every street " tour . in Rome i was listening the concert on you on your left .... wearing a zildjian tshirt ..... shouting at you " hey Chris gimme a stick !!!! and you did ! lovely lovely memories ! she still with me ! thanks Again ! best concert in my life !

Life is a very complex and strange thing. Some people get overjoyed by whatever things, might be even a simple one. Personally, I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to listen to this drum solo in this way. To highlight it and focus on it instead of on the song itself is a pure delight. I can say this video is one of my top 10 ever discoveries on UA-cam. Many, many, many thanks, Chris 🙏
You're the one who is being humble here Chris, it's so pleasant to see people with that behavior and approach to life, that is the right way to be. Taking advantage of your kindness, I humbly suggest/request something, which would be wonderful to see as well: Could you do some sort of similar video to this one, on the drum part of another song from Mark Knopfler also played by Danny Cummings, Speedway to Nazareth: ua-cam.com/video/vs91er7AZmg/v-deo.html I noticed many positive comments on Danny's work in this song, from people who unlike me, seem to understand drumming. But when you get to "Calling Elvis' with your drums I peed my pants, for the sheer accuracy of your drumming. My wife was all over the floor laughing. Yeah right.... Ok.. jeez..! Your lifelong fan.
God bless you Chris. You provide solace to the soul that is craving music. Mark is one of my all time favs, and it is through him, I've found you. Hope you get to his band once again.
First: Dire Straits 'Calling Elvis', a masterpiece, from start to finish. Second, Chris Whitten, you are a true, professional without a doubt, your timing, the exact time, it shows, your talent, without your drumsticks the piece would not be as masterful as it is, Chris, great drummer, few like you . Congratulations plus the pride of having been the performer of Dire Straits magic, along with MK. Golden age of rock music.

Thank you Chris. This is a marvelous gift for all DS's fans. I had the pleasure and the honor to see Dire Straits live during the OES tour. I remember your great ability and your passion to play the drums and the great expressiveness of the Dire Straits orchestra. Yeah, the legendary Dire Straits wasn't an ordinary rock band but an authentic multi talented orchestra. How many awesome talents in this band! Only for the drums and percussion in the Dire Straits history it's possible to mention Pick Withers, Terry Williams, Omar Hakim, Manu Katché, Jeff Porcaro, Danny Cummings and Chris Whitten. Thank you so much!!!!!
Thank you for the groove you bring into my life. Chris W. you are my Yoda ....

Chris, I saw this tour in Wellington, New Zealand. Great memories I was 19. Just love the album On Every Street esp Planet of New Orleans. I moved to the UK in 2000 age 27. A pity you weren't treated with much respect on the tour. Not even a smile on stage from..as you say probably 3rd choice drummer. I think you were awesome for the tour and always will. Jeff and Manu didn't want the long gig.
Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful treat! Love from Barcelona, Chris. Saw you on the 4th of October, 1992.
Good Job Good Job
Bravo, eres un maquina, Jeff Porcaro estaria orgulloso. Saludos desde España!
Nice to see and hear, that Chris still likes it to play, after doing this several hundreds of times in 91/92
I saw you perform with McCartney on the 89/90 tour at the Worcester Centrum & Foxboro stadium/Massachusetts. Great shows!
One of the earliest shows, then one of the last.
@@ChrisWhittenMusic Tripping the Live Fantastic. I remember Paul saying , "This is a good place to be" right before he sang Yesterday in Worcester.
I forgot you were on the CHOBA B CCCP album as well. That must of been a good buzz for you to do those gigs! I dig your playing on those albums. Thanks again. Cheers!

Wow this was amazing!
I just recently discovered this song and have been blown away by how Jeff Pocaro recorded this. This is a great breakdown and drum lesson. I’ve been searching his name many times on UA-cam but this video never came up. You should consider sharing this with more Pocaro fans! Chris you are a beast!
@@dariusdrumming Thanks

🙂 Great!
Insane drummer.
You sir, are whom I was looking out for. I kid you not. You were amazing on that tour "On the night" . I could not get enough of you. You looked so young and full of zest. That combo in the middle with the other percussionist was amazing...! This comment is when I just got on your view and am watching. But when you get to "Calling Elvis' with your drums I peed my pants, for the sheer accuracy of your drumming. My wife was all over the floor laughing. Yeah right.... Ok.. jeez..! Your lifelong fan.
Thank you so much
God bless you Chris. You provide solace to the soul that is craving music. Mark is one of my all time favs, and it is through him, I've found you. Hope you get to his band once again.
@@invista4134 Thank you.
Great drummer all the times, amazing song, amazing musician
So it's you Sir!! who was behind the wonderful mastersound drumbeat on calling Elvis
I was smitten but that drum beat.
Thank you.
Thank you
What a amazing performance.
Thanks
