Don't worry about getting the perfect rig set up 1st use what you got almost any good reel and rod will do. When you get into it more then upgrade but you can use any rod and reel and the right tackle for the surf.
I have tried the shrimp after you mentioned them recently with success, as a bonus, the yellowfin croaker like the shrimp as well.
The Vanford is a great reel. I have the Miravel 5000 which is 139.00 and is super lightweight, a step down from the Vanford.
PK, I am a big fan of BiMart on sale fishing rods and reels, I buy a bait cast rod and cut off the bottom eye for better casting, the reel I like is also from BiMart, the Okuma Ceymar C55 for about $40 bucks!
PK great tech info on Surf Perch fishing gear. Those Gulp Shrimp are likely firmer and tougher for those dinks to pull of the hook than Berkeley Sand Worms.
I am super happy with my Tailored Tackle 10' surf rod and reel combo.
I agree that a 9-10' 1.5-2 oz salmon rod is probably ideal. I really like the Cabelas rods- cheap and almost perfect. But, if you're just getting started, you can take your med wt trout or bass rod and do pretty well for surf perch. Any 7' med wt rod and 3000 size reel will catch you fish. Rinse your gear well and it will last. Don't let your lack of ideal gear keep you home!
I've got that rod, and I really like it. So Braided line will not chew up the guides? I've always used Ande Mono line when ocean fishing. Learned about it back in 84 when I was down in Southern California. So I found my rod, and yep, its the old IM8. As for a reel. Those Shimano reels are WAY out of my price range. I use Diawa BRI reels, or I have a nice old Mitchel reel. And yes, I've used a High Low rig, even when fishing here in Wyoming. Stay safe, and tight lines.
Cabela's is in Tualatin just off of the I-5 freeway on the west side. I have a 9.5 ft Okuma rod that works well. Unfortunately, I haven't used it in quite a while.
