You may tire of me as our December sun is setting 'Cause I'm not who I used to be No longer easy on the eyes But these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for Both a beginning and an end But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize When he catches his reflection on accident On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched Trying to take flight, leaving everything behind But even at our swiftest speed We couldn't break from the concrete In the city where we still reside And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn For the sea like navy men 'Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides Like brothers on a hotel bed Like brothers on a hotel bed Like brothers on a hotel bed Like brothers on a hotel bed You may tire of me as our December sun is setting 'Cause I'm not who I used to be
Strange to think I loved this song when I was 15 and had no idea what it was about but it was comforting. I'm almost 30 now and I finally understand the lyrics. This makes me so nostalgic but it's still so beautiful.
Where I'm sitting right now. Been married for 15 years and this song is where we're at. I love my wife, and I miss her even though we're together every day. We're not who we used to be.
I was 21 and i was getting into a relationship that lasted 14 yrs , i understood completely at the time what it meant. Though you imagine you would never be in that position. It's a beautiful song it always was i introduced my ex-wife to it when we met , its so damn deep.
Same this song reminds me of my freshman year of high school, my first break up the hardships of growing up in a broken home I’m 27 now and it reminds me of those days that I oddly miss
This is too goddamned heartbreaking, too goddamned beautiful ... Ben's lyrics at their best. No one's captured the sense of slow disintegration of a once-earnest relationship quite like he has, across so many songs. Knowing how much this man has probably hurt breaks my heart, but thank god he was able to turn all of those experiences into the beautiful songs we get to take in, enjoy, appreciate ... Fucking poetry set to sound. Ugh I've had too many to drink and I'm gushing don't mind me
Jeremy Pace yup, as was the music, too. On the studio version Chris' production absolutely comes into its own in making the musical arrangement sound as wistful as possible. Both he and Ben are fluent emotion-to-music translators.
And it's not just the disintegration of a relationship, but the fading of feeling over time, and the process of aging, and how all these things are inextricably linked. Even the sentiment of "brother's on a hotel bed" is quite nuanced: there's still some form of relationship there, maybe even some form of affection on some level, even if the romance has died. A lot of the song holds bittersweet sentiments like this, such as "who turned your way and saw, something he was not looking for, both a beginning and an end." It's rather a great companion piece to "I Will Follow You Into the Dark," as both songs tackle similar material but from appreciably different angles.
The countermelody that Chris plays on the chorus is gorgeous. One of Ben's best songs, easily. Just totally heartbreaking and cathartic at the same time.
It’s crazy how they can boil it down to two instruments and still keep all of the emotional impact from the original arrangement. Such a beautiful album.
I know death cab doesn't have a ton of popularity but i honestly believe their lyrics are the most poetic and beautiful the music industry will ever hear
Music is alright.. lyrics are great. Even death cab has better songs then this musically.. transatlantisism, a lack of color, I will possess your heart, titles and registration, soul meets body, I will follow you into the dark etc.
@@503AndrewLee I disagree. I think they were becoming a little bit too comfortable with their style, whilst the last few albums have been very interesting in their variation of instruments and tones.
@@byebye1813 Yeah, I think if they had to get comfortable with any style, it should have been the grounded introspective songwriting that put them on the map in the first place. You don't hear Death Cab putting out many "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" or "Title And Registration" level songs these days.
I heard these lyrics as a sample on a drum and bass tune by articial intelligence a long time ago back ion my youth, I then typed in the lyrics and found death cab for cutie years later and thus found this video later on in my life again. I have to say after listening to a lot of death cab for cutie, I will probobly listen to them for the rest of my life. Absolutley amazing!
You may tire of me As our December sun is setting 'Cause I'm not who I used to be No longer easy on the eyes These wrinkles masterfully disguise The youthful boy below Who turned your way and saw Something he was not looking for Both a beginning and an end But now he lives inside Someone he does not recognize When he catches his reflection on accident On the back of a motorbike With your arms outstretched, trying to take flight Leaving everything behind But even at our swiftest speed We couldn't break from the concrete In the city where we still reside And I have learned That even landlocked lovers yearn For the sea like navy men 'Cause now we say good night From our own separate sides Like brothers on a hotel bed (X4) You may tire of me As our December sun is setting 'Cause I'm not who I used to be...
I think this is their best song. Lyrically and melodically if you’ve ever been in a relationship like the one he’s describing this fucking song will wreck you.
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
But these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched
Trying to take flight, leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men

Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Like brothers on a hotel bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
38, and every year this song means more to me
@W - me too and I’m 67.
Me too yo, me too
I’ll be 41 in July and feel you!

Funny you would say that, this song was actually a Ben/Chris cowrite.
Jeremy Pace yup, as was the music, too. On the studio version Chris' production absolutely comes into its own in making the musical arrangement sound as wistful as possible. Both he and Ben are fluent emotion-to-music translators.
Just amazing.

pls share why ?
Who loves to listen to death cab in the fall besides me?
Insert flashbacks here
Have you played Night in the Woods? There’s a definite fall/Death Cab vibe to that game...
Songwriting at its absolute finest.
cant explain this to others, thank u u belong to 33 universe......
I wish this wasn't such a relatable song.
Marriage is incredibly difficult.
That’s sad. Never been married. But took a few relationships as far as they could go. Is it even worth it?
Seeing Chris Walla up there made me sad
I'm 72 years young and I love this band, every song is a story. can't wait for the new album.
Likewise although I’m only 71
And I’m 15. I guess I’ve gotta a lot to live up to I think.
the fucking piano in this is orgasmic and when it first links with the strumming it is just such a well thought out beautiful sound.
very thoughtful chord engiineering
Brilliant how do these young men know what 40 years into a marriage is all about
The countermelody that Chris plays on the chorus is gorgeous. One of Ben's best songs, easily. Just totally heartbreaking and cathartic at the same time.
I think this might be my favorite one from them... Even though they have many great songs, it's hard to choose...
look up everything’s a ceiling acoustic
If this doesn’t bring a tear to your eye you aren’t human.
It’s crazy how they can boil it down to two instruments and still keep all of the emotional impact from the original arrangement. Such a beautiful album.
One of their best songs. But then again there's really not a song by DCFC that didn't become one of my favorites at some point.
I know death cab doesn't have a ton of popularity but i honestly believe their lyrics are the most poetic and beautiful the music industry will ever hear
JCalibr well said, incredible songwriting!
They have incredible popularity though, everyone and their grandma's know death cab
I feel that way about The Tragically Hip. But this song is gorgeous.
@Tyler Smith I think they just mean mainstream popularity. They are popular but really only with people who are indieheads I feel.
If you like poetic lyrics, I definitely suggest looking up The Spill Canvas and Elliott Smith. You won't regret it.
Music will never get better than this..
Agreed
with you 10-4
Music is alright.. lyrics are great. Even death cab has better songs then this musically.. transatlantisism, a lack of color, I will possess your heart, titles and registration, soul meets body, I will follow you into the dark etc.
only in my dreams could i ever imagine writing music as hauntingly beautiful as this master piece.
This song makes the hair on my arms stand. It's so beautiful
miss Chris Walla and fat benny
I also miss Chris Walla :(
Agreed. Last few albums without Chris struggled a bit but they are finding their ground again with their newest album Thank you for today.

Makes me cry every time. Not ashamed to admit that at all.
i wish i could cry to it too, but i just feel sad and nostalgic when listening to it
Same...
The guitar here reminds me of Have You Forgotten by the Red House Painters.
miss you chris walla :(
Such a haunting, beautiful song. Can't believe it came out so long ago now. Really feeling the lyrics now.
I wish i could like this a million times. one of my fave albums ever. love Ben gibbard!
I miss this deathcab - one of the best songs ever imo.
I heard these lyrics as a sample on a drum and bass tune by articial intelligence a long time ago back ion my youth, I then typed in the lyrics and found death cab for cutie years later and thus found this video later on in my life again. Amazing song. First heard it when I was 15. Now at 27 it means so much more
Been a fan since 2009 and this song still gives me goosebumps.
Wish I could go back to the first time I heard this song
You may tire of me
As our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
These wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside
Someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
On the back of a motorbike
With your arms outstretched, trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
'Cause now we say good night
From our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed (X4)
You may tire of me
As our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be...
Thank you
Haha how did I not know about this until now, the view count's about to double just from me XD.
I guess Ben got into marathon running and started controlling his diet
Ben + Chris was DCFC. Nothing will ever get close to what they could do togheter.
I really miss this era of Death Cab. Walla is missed SO MUCH.
Can this be any sadder?
Been listening to this for years and years, always return to it, magnificent poem x
this fucks me up everytime
That first verse is the definition of pain and heartbreak
I miss Ben Gibbard before her cared how he looked. Half of Plans is that old Ben Gibbard...
I think this is their best song. Lyrically and melodically if you’ve ever been in a relationship like the one he’s describing this fucking song will wreck you.
gets me every time this song.
Hotel rooms and skyscrapers
They need Chris...

this song means so much to me :’)

I'm still here
Never gets old.
This.
Beast Mode!!
So good
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Anyone know what chords he's playing? Doesn't match the traditional capo 3 'F Am C F' hook most people tab this song as..
Attendez la crème I think it's f2, am, g6
