This song an his performance reminds me of the deep pain I felt ten years ago when the love of my life and I ended our marriage, I thought I would die. It took five years for me to completely heal. For those of you going through a similar situation there is hope, I am happy now, it made me stronger in ways I can not describe.
That's great of you to post, I agree it can be okay again after. Sadly it's been nearly six years now and I'm still alone. It's just something I've gotten used to, even though every day that passes tells me that humans weren't meant to be alone.
@@christiandaugherty1267 I can remember that feeling. I lost 30 lbs and I only slept 3 to 4 hours a day. I was very anxious and exhausted at the same time. I nearly lost my job. It did lead me to a good place and it made me into the man I wish I had always been. I feel for you, I wish I had some magical words to help you but I dont, other than things do get better but very slowly or at least that's how it went for me. Hang in there and take care.
Yep been there....still am in many ways...changed forever.
2022 listening to this tonight getting me through a lot, death cab will always have my heart never quit making music❤️
Here in 2023. He's long after my generation, but enjoyed their music in the 2010s. Hope they're still kicking.
@@philomath67 2024
Deep, moving almost creepy in the fact that it touches your inner soul so much while listening......must have more meaning than even he knows.
"There's grace within forgiveness but it's so hard for me to find"
This sits hard with me.
Black Sun is one of the best singles I have heard in years. Great acoustic work and vocals. These guys are good
Randy Wylie better than good
Absolutely!
@@acrock21 Oh, mos def.
Best Version of a great song! Thanks for loading this up for us!
He is the best. The best. What a talent.
I want this song played at my funeral.
The greatest songwriter of our generation Mr Ben Gibbons
Frank black
There is whisky in the water
And there is death upon the vine
There is fear in the eyes of your father
And there is "Yours" and there is "Mine"
There is a desert veiled in pavement
And there's a city of seven hills
And all our debris flows to the ocean
To meet again, I hope it will
How could something so fair
Be so cruel
When this black sun revolved
Around you!
There is an answer in a question
And there is hope within despair
And there is beauty in a failure,
And there are depths beyond compare
There is a role of a lifetime
And there's a song yet to be sung
And there's a dumpster in the driveway
Of all the plans that came undone
How could something so fair
Be so cruel
When this black sun revolved
Around you!
How could something so fair
Be so cruel
When this black sun revolved
Around you!
There is whisky in the water
And there is death upon the vine
And there is grace within forgiveness
But it's so hard for me to find
How could something so fair
Be so cruel
When this black sun revolved
Around you!
How could something so fair
Be so cruel
When this black sun revolved
Around you!
Absolutely gorgeous. Keep doing what you're doing. So excited to see you in concert!!
this is beautiful. thank you💜

I will replay this till I die.
This song is infectious in a good way. Deep thoughts .to deep to be found
Amazing song
I saw him in msg. The best show I ever saw. The best.
+Jp Cass Same. The best.
takes me back to self
Stunning and brilliant tune😊❤️👍🎶🎶🎶
My soul is going backwards through time and what a world thank death cab amazing 👏🙌🙏❤
Fantastic song!
how does this have only 17k views???
Hallef Rodrigues good question.
I can't say he surpasses Neil Young, or any memorable artist for that memory. The true value of these musicians lie in the way they make us through their messages.
He is amazing, like Neil Young though, I agree.
Thank you.
Me too.
🤗😞
Terrific!!!!!!!!
exquisite
The painfully beautifull contradiction that life is 💕
Last of their kinds and i so looking forward to seeing them in concert at sydney opera house.
Awesome.
Got my 'How could something so fair be so cruel' tattoo....its all about life, makes mine lighter :-) Still happy with it.
Incredibly good. Jeez
Adding this to my list of songs to learn on guitar. I have a great guitar teacher and I aspire to be as good as him.
its been 9 months XD have u done it ?
I recently learned it on guitar and posted my video here: ua-cam.com/video/N8k3UNjpHz0/v-deo.html. Feel free to use it as a guide for how to play it. I will try to post tabs for it somewhere soon if that helps you.
Großartig !! Danke dafür und ein Gruß aus Kassel Germany !!
He's this generations Neil Young.
Sesslyn Baaz Actually, I think he's trying to emulate him. It's odd you say that because I was thinking he looks a lot like Neil Young. Anyway, I've had that sort of admiration for him, too, although it's been for a really long time.
+Sesslyn Baaz I would guess hes a big fan of neil young and I think theres nothing wrong with trying to be a little like him :-)
😂😭😂🤣
Sesslyn Baaz the doors
Neil Young is this generation's Neil Young - he's still doing it.
Ben Gibbard is definitely growing on me, though.
so ahead of time, so ahead
This isn't a song about personal tragedy. It's about the ending of all things. Northern lights creeping south.
How could something so fair be so cruel.
good tune
özlüyorum...
same with me....A I brought me here.....but really like the song.....never heard of him before.....
Yo!!! This hits so Hard!!! Idk which Version is honestly better. This one has the sound of True Age, Maturity, and Experience in it.
This song is about entering a black hole and seeing all the endings at once
I like every version but the original xD
Music!
🎼❤😍
0:40 he says "an there's a city of seven hills" could this be referring to the Revelations of the bible where in Revelations 17:13 it states "the seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits" in revelations it also talks of a city where the woman sits names "great Babylon" which rules over the earth which is told to be destroyed in the Revelations and at 0:50 he states "and our deb-re floats to the ocean" this could be describing that. Also at 1:01 he states(as well as repeatedly throughout the song) "how could, something so fair be so cruel when this black sun revolves around you" this could be referring to Satan himself as in the bible it states that "even Satan himself disguises himself as an angle of light" where light is described and good or knowledgeable but Satan is described as being very deceiving which he could be referencing when he says "how could something so fair be so cruel".
Just some observations i made not saying this is what he is referencing i just thought it was interesting. I have been reading thought he bible recently and am doing a lot of research on these things and every other song i hear on the radio has some reference to the bible. Its very confusing to me that so little people even notice these things, i mean i have only read Revelations nothing else to some other bible readers may be able to make more connections who knows. Also as my last note if there are any other people who do research on the bible please point me towards some interesting reads im thinking on reading Genesis next because i still dont really know all of the story of god but im really the only person in my family who does this as in research the connections to today in the bible so ill use any tips i can get.
Edit: forgot to add this but these artists also talk about souls a lot and darkness which are both talked about in the bible let alone the name of the band being death cab for cutie, like wtf lol.
UncagedPine9 this adds a whole new layer to this already amazing song
It's Seattle
Nice, but the line in the song is probably about one of the many cities built on seven hills, the most famous of which is Rome (which also is a mystical city as well btw)
Moving.
I heard this song as I was going through a divorce, it hit really close to home.
some one should make a tab of this one
Love this song. Not crazy about how his guitar sounds. I wish he just used a mic here
Brent Blankenship its just an acoustic session
You must deal with the tribe cruelly. There is no compromise.
Killer song. As much as I like the original, I think this version is even better.
💝💝💝💝💝💝
Does anyone know what Brand Guitar that is? I can't see it. I thought it was a Gibson but I'm not sure? I think his capo is blocking the headstock name.
could somebody tell me why ben has two mic´s when they play live? any idea? thank you.
Usually one has aditional effects added to the mix like reverb or something else
my my
Ben is the king. No debate necessary.
The most middle finger song ever
I know how to play every chord in this song- yet I cnnot for the life of me make my guitar sound liek that.
'Course, I am a beginner.
And by beginner, I mean I've been fuckin around with my cheap instruments for years. heh
Probably because it's an electric acoustic guitar and they have that distinct sound.
Jason Wood Probably because he's playing on a Gibson J45. Beautiful instruments
Jason Wood Turn up the treble on your amp and lower the middle & bass. Doesn't give you the exact same sound but should get you closer to it.
+Jared McLane I agree with Jared, Gibsons have a very distinct "crunchy" sound, especially at the mid-range. I play a couple of death cab songs on my Martin, but doesn't sound like this because it's a Martin! Still sounds amazing though
Phosphor bronze strings will help. Cheap, but will get you that nice crunchy warm sound.
Death can is so good when they’re mot overproduced
This band has their moon in Scorpio.
Where can I buy this acoustic version of Black Sun?
It’s a great song and interesting to hear it stripped back, but without that two note motif it doesn’t quite resonate the same as the recording.
he is like lucky Ali of India !
Omg ben looks so old now hahaha. Remember him on "I will possess your heart" hahaha, wonder how old is he now.
in his early 40s /very late 30s
Best song Neil Young never wrote
Im sorry but American Idol brought me here. 😅
Same!
same, maybe that's why I keep watching American Idol, to keep me updated about great music like this
+errer! same lol
As long as you're here, that's what is important.
Note: Not a Death Cab fan....though they do have so much tasty songs....but there is so much out there!!!!..........This song hits!!!
#COM104
I lost the love of my life
And I keep on recording this song
Please stop me
he's certainly going the dark route to get Zoey back.
well, I wouldn't be exactly sure he's trying to 'get her back'
I don't even like Death Cab, but I ♥ this song, especially this version.
This song is about zowie deschanel. She is pretty but She is a black sun that never sets.
+Jp Cass I believe he was the black sun that revolved around her.
+Jessie Evans how do you get that.
+Jp Cass also the sun never revolves around the planets. It is the opposite. The planets revolve around the sun.
+Jp Cass "How could something so fair be so cruel, when this black sun revolved around you?" "This" being him, "you" being her.
+Jessie Evans good one !
I really really love this song, can't listen to it enough, however, no one in my opinion, beats Ryan Adams for best singer/songwriter.
#COMMENT111
Sounds like Willie Nelson wit a Johnny cash twang
a real artist, and only 215k views. well he probably doesn't care to appeal to the masses anyway .
I really like this song. I can't stop thinking he needs a guy's hair cut.
I can't stop thinking you need to get rid of that Confederate participation trophy yah snowflake
I hit the thumbs down by mistake driving in my Taxi Cab.
big time lam o zzzzzzz
Divorce sucks
heres a dislike -
Dude your a millionaire with a $2 flowbee haircut. His hair is terrible.
Brett Walzer I think Ben Howard wins the scary hair wars.
Comment of the century
he is like lucky Ali of India !
