Partners are finally back even though I never played a paper Mario game with partners
I made this joke in the Nintendo release of this trailer but the Things from Sticker Star got tired of being used as attacks and our complaints and became bosses lol
Yeah, I'll just get bug fables instead.
Well, we haven't seen any kind of "cards", there is partners, interesting battle system, very original bosses xD interesting plot, LUIGI!... I think this game looks pretty cool at the moment :3
Here's how the system works: You have your standard boots and hammer, which are permanent and aren't items. However, you'll find upgraded boots and hammers during exploration that are more powerful but degrade with use. So unlike the stickers and cards, they're not a one use item. Think of them as the weapons in BotW and FE Three Houses. There's also gear/accessories you can equip to Mario that'll give him extra perks, like a bit more health or extra damage to his attacks. Finding the toads will allow you to call upon them in battle, in which they'll throw you an item to help out. And as to why there's a time limit, it's to challenge the player to think quick when in battle. As they've said, the battles in this game are also going to have puzzle like elements added to them.

The Nintendo UK site clarified more on the weapons system. Regular boots and hammer are indeed UNLIMITED use, so you'll never be in a situation where you have no ways to attack. The stuff like "shiny boots" and "shiny hammer" use a durability system similar to what you find in a lot of other RPGs and action-adventure games like Breath of the Wild and older Elder Scrolls games. Simply put, basic attacks with the boots and hammer aren't one time use items anymore, while more powerful versions of the weapons can eventually break like weapons in other RPGs (and one screenshot seemed to show you can repair them as one screenshot of the inventory showed a "broken hammer").
