    Your fun trigger facts for this mission:
    Once you rescue the drones, you cannot control exactly 0 buildings AND 0 drones. However, because of weirdness in what Starcraft 1 calls a building, it appears that buildings in production do not count as buildings for purposes of how SC counts. Therefore, you have 0 buildings and 0 drones and lose the mission. Once one of the hatcheries spawns, you are safe to make a second hatchery, even if you were to go to 0 drones.

    • @frankpavey6568

    • @TheHappy115
      @TheHappy115 2 роки тому +9

      While not revelent to this mission, it is true that structures in production do not count for "controlled" units. However, it does count for checking locations. (I.E. If you have 20 supply depo under construction but not built, effect triggers such as "Move an area location on your Supply Depo" will actually put it on the left most supply depo even if its under construction. It creates a weird system where the Condition of a trigger doesn't recognized structures under construction as units, but the Action (or effect) trigger does.
      In fact, using this technique is sometimes used in custom games where structures are replaced by units/other effects in custom games when completed (I.E., don't finish supply depo, and after you want to convert each one, build one and complete one to watch them all transform together instead of 1 at a time)
      Side Note: Halluination works a bit like this too where the hallucination doesn't count as a unit but effects like move location onto said unit can hit the hallucination.

      Also another fun discovery, on this mission, I can use up both drones and defeat trigger doesn’t happen. Guess in SC2 defeat condition does count buildings under construction.

    • @UEDAIP
      @UEDAIP 2 роки тому +3

      The weirdness in how its counted is due to the condition they use here ("command") explicitly only checking units and buildings that finished training/construction - like someone else mentions, this could be fixed by using Bring instead

    It's kinda strange how in SC1 Zerg seem to be the only faction that get elite versions of regular units (Hunter Killers, Torrasque, etc), but in SC2 it's Terran that get the elite unit monopoly (mercenaries). You'd think that either all factions would have their own elite units; or elites are specific to the identity of one faction.

    My only complaint with this mission (other than the awkward insta lose rule, which is more of a game issue than a mission issue) is how poorly defended the Psi Disruptor is. You'd think the UED would invest heavily in defending the weapon that enabled their capture of the Overmind and cost Stukov his life. If moving it to Korhal or Char wasn't doable, then at least leave more than a small force to defend it. Oddly, you are given Hero Zerg, so the enemy could have had more realistic defenses without making the mission too difficult for #2 in the episode.

  • @Owlr4ider
    @Owlr4ider Рік тому +3

    I actually love SC1's and Brood War's Kerrigan. I mean Mengsk literally left her to die at the hands of the Zerg in Starcraft so when the Overmind corrupted her she held a massive grudge, and who can blame her? Being Mengsk's lieutenant before her transformation taught her a lot about Terrans and perhaps more importantly about power, and being a former ghost gave her additional insights. So obviously she became an absolute menace, after all she's the product of 2 other menaces: Mengsk and the Overmind, and has actually surpassed them both, the student becomes the master and all that. All her behind the scenes manipulating is a direct byproduct of her ghost training and tutelage under Mengsk, while her raw power comes from the Overmind. Her behavior throughout the SC1 campaigns is perfectly logical considering her circumstances, and that's the hallmark of good character creation. SC2 made her more likable perhaps but also utterly destroyed her character. She stopped acting in accordance with her character and the ascension crap at the end was a massive cop out for her and everyone else involved in the Legacy of the Void story and SC2 as a whole.

    • @joshuakim5240
      @joshuakim5240 2 роки тому +17

      It's weird too because Wing of Liberty had several lines from Kerrigan suggesting a less petty motivation and greater understanding of things (she is straight up trying to stop Narud, obviously to stop Amon contrary to HOTS's narrative). Even the Tal'Darim got retconned into a manner that makes no sense in the context of WoL (why are "Amon's faithful" against Amon's will in WoL? LOTV even shows that Amon directly communes with them through Terrazine so wtf are they doing trying to stop Raynor whose doing Narud's will?), both of which together make even less sense with the context of SC1 as a result.

    • @gabraeld
      @gabraeld 2 роки тому +12

      @@joshuakim5240 I'm not a big fan of SC2's storytelling either, but to be fair to HotS's characterisation, or at least my take on it, Kerrigan isn't going after Mengsk simply for revenge, but also because she feels (or knows) that as long as he's at the head of the Dominion, she won't ever be safe - proof of which is Mengsk being willing to deploy a major part of his fleet, risk a major incident with Umoja and take out his son and only heir, only to take her and Jim out at that station.
      There is some neat progression over the course of HotS (some of the only character development in all three chapters, if you ask me), where Kerrigan goes from a struggle for survival, and a sort of aimless, desperate position. Which is why she so easily agrees to enlist what remains of the Swarm, kills the protoss on Kaldir, powers-up on Zeras, etc. She's kinda left without true purpose, and doesn't give all these actions much more thought than "whatever I need to do". Then, over the course of LotV, not only does she realise that Jimmy Jim isn't dead, but also that there is a much greater purpose lying ahead of her. Despite the fact she knows she needs to face Amon, however, she still needs to deal with Mengsk first. With him and his paranoia and obsession at the head of the most powerful organisation in the sector (arguably more powerful than the Daelaam), she won't ever have her hands free to fight the End Wars.
      However, big parts of that interpretation are kinda undermined by the very weak reluctance most everyone has at siding with her, especially during LotV, and how the absolutely monstrous acts she commits to ensure her own survival (the scientific colony on Kaldir, anyone?) are absolutely never brought up again, and she's just portrayed as a big badass hero, so you kinda... lose a lot of the shading in the end.

    • @joshuakim5240
      @joshuakim5240 2 роки тому +7

      @@gabraeld
      I feel like HOTS would have worked much better if Kerrigan didn't have that nonsense memory loss and fought specifically to do the bigger, greater things needed to stop Amon even if those things are morally reprehensible. Hell, it's shown that she even forgets about the Hybrid (she has to be reminded of their existence by Stukov) so her motivation for 80% of HOTS is purely for petty revenge that she already got in BW. Why is there no explanation for SC1 Kerrigan's character other than to erase it? Imagine expanding upon it instead.
      How awesome would it have been to have an actual anti-hero with Machiavellian methods? She doesn't even have to be evil: those final bits during the Korhal assault where she gimps her invasion to let civilians escape was a great scene but would have better if it was less of an expected typical hero reaction. Show that her evil actions are done to achieve a good result that would otherwise not be possible if too much attention is diverted to morality.

Not necessarily people shit-talking Kerrigan, but "good guys" having interaction with their "bad guys" in general. Raynor and Mengsk being stuck with each other and SUPER HATING EACH OTHER was one of the highlights of this campaign, and helps characterize the both of them better.

      Well my headcanon for WoL is :
      Raynor is a raging alcoholic, unable to get a proper rebellion started against the dominion. His actions are tolerated by Mengsk as it fuels his propaganda and the lives/material:power ratio is good for him.
      Raynor is also strapped for cash to pay for his ride insurance and to fund a more meaningful Guerilla.
      but boom, comes his old buddy Tychus, who's basically a marine, with a contract from the Moebius foundation that is the biggest military lab in the dominion who wants the artifact restored. Why ? Because they're scientists and Narud is at the top, and I think Narud's character is fine. Why Raynor ? Because he's an outlier of the dominion and it would make his attacks on the protoss to recover the artifacts less damaging to the protoss/dominion relationships.
      Narud also pitches Mengsk about the artifact being usable as a mean to turn Kerrigan back into a human, because Zergs are xel Naga creations and all. It's useful for the dominion as the swarm without Kerrigan is much less dangerous to the terran, it's useful for Narud as without Kerrigan, the Zergs will never get his plans.
      So Mengsk sends his son to Raynor with that explanation. The latter being who he is jumps on the occasion and cures Kerrigan. It turns out that Valerian actually wanted to leave the dominion because he believes he'd be a much better ruler than his dad and he did that mission to get on the good side of the main antagonist, the Raiders.
      So the artifact is recovered for the Moebius who wants to experiment on it by Raynor who needs money, and all of that happens because it serves Mengsk's plans. And I think that makes the story less bad for WoL. Except for that doctor part. And I have no idea how to adapt the two other expansions into something logical

    I'm not sure if it's good or bad design but as the enemy AI plays with what is essentially infinite money I've noticed that whenever they have rebuild triggers that don't go away on the defenders of a particularly forward base what ends up happening is that they endlessly rally a trickle of units trying to replace those defenders and it becomes a kind of attrition mechanic. Sometimes this is on mission I feel didn't need it but it certainly makes it harder. Watching grant get frustrated with it at points reminded me of my own play through

    I've always wondered about the 0-drone failure mechanic in this mission.
    Perhaps it was meant to avoid softlocks. Theoretically, you could lose all your workers but then still spend 20 minutes clearing the mission successfully, only to discover it's all wasted time because there's no way of actually getting the disrupter to the objective. It reads you have 0 workers (I don't think the SCV carrying the objective actually counts as a worker as it can no longer do worker things), it decides the game is soft-locked, it fails.
    Or perhaps it's just the way the SCV trigger death is implemented. The SCV is technically from another faction in the player's alliance; perhaps the trigger is just that if a player in the alliance reaches 0 workers, the mission fails.
    I really wish the mission files hadn't been encrypted. I must have spent hundreds of hours playing around with the map editor when I was a kid, slowly figuring out the trigger editor - it'd have been really useful to have something other than the enslavers campaign to learn from, and fascinating to see how the triggers were set up in some of the main missions.

    • @jakobeule7
      @jakobeule7 2 роки тому +3

      It think the defeat trigger simply counts the number of drones and buildings the play owns. If both hit zero it's game over. I've never seen it for myself, but i've read in forums from people who did extract the mission files, that the triggers were very simply desinged overall. No interesting tricks like in WC3 or SC2.

    • @andrewcheyne5061
      @andrewcheyne5061 2 роки тому

      @@jakobeule7 Ah, that's a shame. Strange that the game would read as 0 buildings/drones even while they're morphing though. Anyway, thanks for sharing the answer, I've always been really curious about it!

    Hotkey in mass recall is an absolute mess. Only grid hotkey could immune the randomness of the hotkey setup. There is no reliable fix other than pre-configuring hotkey somehow outside of SC2 and that’s not even that reliable.

    Hey Grant, could you explain why it's not super important to spread creep for Zerg in SC1 like they do in SC2? Is it just too hard? Are the bonuses not important enough to warrant losing a drone and minerals to make the creep colony?

    Ok i want to know now. Why are the hotkeys the way they are in starcraft?
    In age of empires 2 atleast, you see the roster and each roster represents a button on the keyboard but they are aligned the way the keys are. So everytime you see on the most top left of the roster something, it will always be the hotkey Q. and on the most bottom right one is the key B. Like row 1 is Q W E R T, Row 2 is A S D F G and row 3 is Y X C V B. No matter the building or unit.
    It is so confusing to me to see S on to top left and B on the top right.
    I mean in Age 2 you do have something like H for HQ and other universal ones but the visual hotkeypad is always the same.

    The subtle inter-politics and suspicions in the OG and BW starcraft campaign were masterful. Then along comes SC 2: rescue kerrigan, SIKE! she's back to zerg. and then amon, which is just Warcraft Sargeras translated to SC universe. Activision really fucked over the acre and attention to the finer things in everything blizzard......and the SC2 campaign highlights Blizzards internal struggle to keep the magi alive whilst its being drained year by year.......The completely ruined what made starcraft feel so uniquely different from its counterpart.

      There is also a change in Blizzard writing priorities. It is currently all about "Fit in cool iconic characters having cool iconic moments all the time, lore and consistency isn't as important as rule of cool" which ironically, makes everything less cool.
