I have a fair few of the Compile shoot em up games now, including Zanac Ex, Aleste and Aleste 2 for the MSX and Zanac for the NES. Have been trying to get a copy of Gun-nac for the Famicom for a while now, but have not come across one at the right price yet. Definitely looks worthwhile to keep hunting for. Great review as always.
My uncle brought my this most joyful shooter from Japan, when he worked there in the '80s/'90s. The music is excellent -- somehow, it seems to have a similar vibe to the soundtrack of Gremlins 2 (Famicom), at least as far as my memory serves. And the gameplay is very good. If I remember correctly, the SELECT button cycles through four (five?) different speeds, so your ship's manoeuverability can be easily adjusted according to the situation -- much, much better than Life Force's speed system.
I got lucky and scored this game on Amazon for around 50 bucks. It's terrific and Compile was an awesome company. Their swan song was zanac x zanac on the ps1. A very rare shmup. I have a modded ps1 so I can play it. Shmups are the best.
In Famicom version, a female mage/pilot is piloted the ship while in NES version, a male commander is also piloted it. The differences between two versions are the intro and epilogue is lengthen as you saw a female mage but the NES version is shorter intro and epilogue even the male pilot cannot seen it.
If wikipedia is correct the plot involves a weird energy wave bringing inanimate objects to life so the Giant Bunny is either a statue or a super size stuffed animal.
I believe the same guys that worked on The Guardian Legends also worked on this game. If you ever played TGL on NES, the same assests are actually being used in this game. PLAY TGL, if you love Gun Nac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You won't be disappointed!
Sure Gun Nac can be expensive but it never reached price level of Summer Carnival '92: Recca which (despite that it's one of best shmups on Famicom/NES) is absolutely insane.
It's interesting that Famicom games are more affordable to collect, yet their NES counterparts were usually edited for content or cultural references. With the Retron 5 coming soon, I wonder if more people will be searching out these carts.
The most i ever paid for an NES cart was TMNT III. It was 40 bucks. My cousin had it back in the day and we played it all the time so i had to have it. It's one of the only games i ever caved into the high price to play again.
I really like the famicom design much more than the NES. With tue exception of the gamepads that cant be changed or replaced. I would really like Nintendo of América stop "North americanicing" japanese games. Just give us the same games and consoles translated. You know kirby I am watching you!
Mark, stop putting NES cartirdges inside Genesis, otherwise it might come alive and tell you that "Sega does what Nintendont". Ahh Gun Nac.Great shmup. And lovely cartirdge.
You watch stuff about making game`s back then you only had so much mem so you had to pick and choice what you put in the game , Why did they not just stick two cards of top of each other are something giving them 2 time`s or 3 time`s the mem , Sega did it with one Sonic game , i think they was the only one to think of it and it did not take off :i think .

This is still my favorite NES game. I just love everything about it.
This game for the Nes is as rare as Samson, Panic, Power blade 2, etc. But IMO the best rare game on the system. It’s amazing.
The prices of games like this justify owning a flash cart... which is why I need one.
Damn, an F-bomb in a CGR video. Been subscribed for years and it still surprises me.

Just discovered this game and absolutely love it!!
I finished this masterpiece on my laptop. I gotta say this game was ahead of its time.
This is truly a hidden gem!
I still can't believe how well this game runs--No real slowdown or flicker that I could see while playing. Great game.

Enjoyed this game. Invasion of the fluffy animals, great weapons, cool soundtrack! Need I say more. Fantastic review!
10/10, Nintendo buy this, remake, or just put this on 3DS and Wii U!!
This game is amazing. It's on those 150-in-1 multicarts you can get on aliexpress or eBay too.

Gun Nac is one of the best game ever made for nes! The game has his own atmosphere and one of the best VGM for nes. Just great!!! 10 / 10!
i agree with you
One of the best Nes games. The Famicom cartridges look cool. Wonder why they look so different than the U.S. version. Great review for a great game!
So glad I recently got a famicom, will definitely get a copy of this
Haven't played this before! Looks super cool!
"Gun-Nactacular"
Haha! You are a funny man, Mark!
I liked your what the fuck at 6:04.

Interesting, I'm only familiar with Tonkin House for their SNES Ys ports.
You should do a review of Strider pretty fun you should give it a try. Both the old and new one are one of my favorites.

There should be a rerelease with the option to play one or the other. 😃
... wasn't released in the EU and the US copy on Ebay is around 99 dollars ...
The first time i heard Mark say fuck unsensored.
Me too man!
If wikipedia is correct the plot involves a weird energy wave bringing inanimate objects to life so the Giant Bunny is either a statue or a super size stuffed animal.
5:40 "Trophies!"
Is it just me, or did you just quote Gargoyles?
I snagged my copy of the NES version for a mere 5 bucks! Now its worth much MUCH more!
How close is the English version to this? Are the cigs censored?
I must get this for my Famiclone.

Gun Nac rules! Wasn't aware the US version was censored a little bit, as I never saw the cigarettes/lighters while playing the US cart. Cool!
When did you come back to UA-cam?! : D
The best shooter on nes!!! Well at least in good competition with Life force anyway.
Why are you guys uploading old videos? I've seen the past few before.
Got this cheap from a clearest sale at rental store that was going out of business when on vacation visiting family
Damn, he wasn't kidding about the game being expensive. Cheapest I saw it on ebay was $130.

Mark should play Recca. Seriously, I've been waiting for it/
***** Well, someone should send him a reproduction Cart of Recca.
Man that Game had a insanely good Soundtrack for its Time.
Yup why I had to mod my Wii just got covers its kool💖
Love the game love the music, runs so well on the nes

Shit, is that Robbit from Jumping Flash on the cartridge?! :0
What i mean is today if you run out of space you just make more then 1 dvd , why not just use more then 1 cart then
the opening joke had me dying xD
ohhh myyy goodddd a new CGR. I can hardly contain my pants.
Im playing this game right now. It's fun as fuck! Thank you Mark.
Wow that game looks great for being on the nes.
You should see Lifeforce
6:02 is hilarious
I get the feeling he's way too impressed by the bunny.
Weapon 4 + T Bomb = best combination!!
An advanced civilization's AI is in full rebellion
Love this game
I only paid 5.99 for my U.S. copy and that was only in 2010.
I actually found an NES version for $less than $20 back in 2005.
Oh wow, I bought this game in 2012 for 30 dollars on ebay and it seems to have doubled in price. The game is too awesome to sell though :)

Best shooter ever💖 4 sega I like Musha
PETA will have a shit fit over this
Why? It's not real bunny rabbit but toy that came to life due to cosmic radiation.
Fresh Meadows is in NYC
I lost it at around 6:00. XD
You mention Complie, but not their involvement in one of the best puzzle games ever, Puyo Puyo? Blasphemy!
famicom version far more affordable and not censored
Compile's parody of their own shmup series, Zanac.
Let's do the F.U.N. song!
It's a whole lot cheaper in price. I bought it for my Famicom instead of the NES. Big price difference.
Mark requires a separate map of New York.
Awesome
Thankfully my Famiclone copy was pretty cheap ;]
I beat it on my first try!
Thank god for emulators!

Just picked this up for $150
Yeah I got a loose cart, really good label. I've been getting into PC bullet hell shmups, taking it to the next level
Why wouldn't you pay for Rarity...she's best pony!
If I were a women I'd marry Mark.

Thanks. But it was pure luck.
You win a Gamecom
I must get this for my Famiclone.
