i love playing these games that really test the limits of systems. i know this game is expensive, but somehow i prefer shelling out 60$+ on this game than buying modern AAA titles or any current-gen system game. 8bit and 16bit is the gaming sweet spot
Bought the game a few months ago. Easily the best 8bit space shooter ever!!! Great music and unbelievable visuals. Worth the 30-40 dollars I paid for it.
One of the best shmups for NES/Famicom. I already said this in the past but Mark you should try Recca because I'm sure you will like it. Over Horizon too because it's also awesome shmup.
I've never been huge on vertical or horizontal scrolling shooters, but between your reviews and those on Game Sack I'm really starting to feel like I should give the genre a better chance. Any recommendations for the best games to start with? I prefer fun to frustrating most of the time, though I have a better tolerance for this with older titles (I can play Mega Man without getting too frustrated, but I can't say the same for Ikaruga.) The only shmups I currently have is SNK's Bermuda Triangle on PSP, Turrian 2000 on PC and the Raiden collection on Android. What other games might be better to start with to get a feel for the genre?
In contrary to what you may think because of gameplay videos some more recent shmups are generally more newcomer friendly. So start with Mushihimesama Futari, DoDonPachi series (DoDonPachi: DaiOuJou is my favorite entry), Batsugun (especially Special version), Espgaluda series and Ketsui. Even though these games are from bullet hell subgenre (which is relatively newest shmup subgenre) they should be good entry point for you. They are still hard games but because of their mechanics they aren't so frustrating like many older games. After you will start feeling more comfortable with shmups you should try titles from other shmup genres (especially from such classic series like Gradius, R-Type, Darius, Raiden, Strikers 1945, Star Soldier and Thunder Force). There is to much good games that you should try and this list could go on and on so I will only say that games from companies like Compile, Toaplan, Cave, Raizing, Takumi, Treasure and Psikyo (of course not counting such well known companies like Konami, Taito, Irem or SNK) are the best ones in the genre. Also remember that some shmups were only released in arcades so Mame emulator will be your only option to play them unless you have boatload of cash.
I would recommend Thunder Force III for the Genesis. It's awesome and not too difficult. I suck at shooters and even I was able to beat that game after a few weeks of practice.
***** Oh, well of course. :P A lot of good suggestions here it looks like. The Thunder Force games I've seen a lot of in Game Sack and the like, so that does sound like a good place to start. I think my problem is that, at least for the moment, I don't know how to tell an objectively GOOD shooter from a bad one. Given my tastes I'd likely err on the side of preferring easier games, which seems to be the exact opposite of what most consider a "good" shooter.
The game does look great. It also has a lot more depth than most vertical scrolling shooters with all the special moves and forms you can do. Did I detect a bit of slow-down when the screen was busy? I think this might be the limit of what an 8 bit system can handle.
This is an awesome shooter indeed...but s wee bit out of my price range. I'll just download Summer Carnival 92 Recca for 3DS. Hopefully Konami brings this to Virtual Console.
Just unclick the auto play on the right side of the screen, but remember the more videos you watch, the more ads you view(unless you have an adblock of course), and the more money UA-cam/Google makes. ;-)
This game is crazy, having a graphic give 16 bit console run for the money and have decent frame rate. And about the Phoenix form, if you have 2 players, it will only activate when you have enough gem with 2 player craft proximate to each other. And in 2 player mode, 2P can control the direction of the red plasmas weapon firing direction. So, you literally can do a lot of damage when you have 2 players in Phoenix form. I really hope Konami can remaster this game on console...
Just for the NES, Konami made The Adventures of Bayou Billy, which I though was pretty terrible, but it is hard to find any real turds worse than that in their catalog. Capcom had a few fairly bad ones, Yo! Noid, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, and 1942 come to mind. Their NES version of Commando wasn't too hot either. I don't know, but I think there were other bad ones left in Japan (along with some good ones). All in all though, their bad games are still better than the best some companies came up with.

Now people are charging upwards of a hundred! Lucky you😎

Best channel
Ever we miss you mark!
Reminds me of both Life Force and RayStorm!
All those sweet Konami 8 bit SFX.
It is indeed a must own. I'm very glad I have a copy. It's one of the games I keep returning to the most. It's a perfect shooter.
Crisis force, and Over horizon are my favourite Nes shooters. Just both brilliant on every level.

Gun-Nac but prepare to pay.

i absolutely love this game!!
I have a repo cart of this for my nes. It really pushes the nes to its limits. Awesome paralax scrolling and sound.
Wow! This is an awesome show piece of what this old hardware is capable of. My favorite shooter is Aleste (Powerstrike) for SEGA Master System.

Wow! I think this is one of the most advanced (considering it's for famicom) shooters I've seen on an 8-bit system.
Mark.....are you going to Retrogamecon 2014 in Syracuse NY on Nov 8th?
didn't you publish this a few hours ago? - but with 2 minutes of bonus black video
that crevice section is ripped from musha aleste with various layers...amazing for an 8 bit console :O
I like the narration on this a lot better
That game looks pretty cool, never heard of it.
Mark review chojin sentai jetman and kyoryu sentai zyuranger for Famicom
and disney infinity 2.0 and skylanders trap team
Didn't you already upload this ?
Yeah, it really does look good.
My favorite game.
Ah, I see this was re-uploaded because of the extra 3 minutes last time.
This game is still awesome, though. :)
I might have to give this rom a download haha
I need to get this game!

This game was responsible for the cancellation of Contra Force in Japan! This was released on a special day for me.
You forgot to mention if you play 2 player you can combine both plane, that's even awesome
Reminds me of Raiden. Awesome!
This game truely is awsome
Why wont UA-cam stop autoplaying videos I watched already???
it kev No, I am talking about the black playlist on the right of the screen that keeps auto playing videos I've watched already! Its very annoying!
Just unclick the auto play on the right side of the screen, but remember the more videos you watch, the more ads you view(unless you have an adblock of course), and the more money UA-cam/Google makes. ;-)
It's a reupload.
the chicken pic. lol
I bought a NES reproduction cart of this game. No regrets and easier on the bank account.
Reminds me of Blazing Lazers, actually.
nuts and milk
CRISIS FORCE!
has anyone made a repro of this for a NA NES?
I have...
Looks awesome!!!

the moles are coming the moles are coming
Did konami and capcom ever make a crappy game? I dont think i ever played a bad one from either of them.
the last castlevania game for konami was crap. And the last final fight game from capcom also sucked.

yep just another reupload. i almost got excited
This guys way of speaking, emphasis and delayed delivery gets old very fast
I play this game almost daily.
He was right. I bought 2 copies. One to play and one CIB.
First. Also, what?
jesus fuck that game is jerky
That looked stunning?
First!!
This is basically Konami's attempt at a Star Soldier game
I hate the NES's graphics tear up so much!
Convinced me to get it, my wallet hates you right now or more accurately my credit card x_x
THE NES/FAMICOM CANNOT DO STEREO. what are you smoking mark?
Same thought. I guess he meant "with stereo headphones"? not "in stereo".
Its the A/V Famicom, not sure if that does stereo but I believe it uses the same a/v out as the SNES
