Awesome, I love this game! I used to play this at my town's local Chinese restaurant! The owner, Mr. Chu always let me play for free! Ahh the memories! :)
I don't normally like war-based games, but I make an exception with "1942" & "1943". These are two excellent shooters, and I'm glad that they're on the "Capcom Classics Collection" disk.
I remember renting this as a kid, thinking that it was 1943, and being upset that there was no lightning attack or spread gun powerups, LOL! I did have a lot of fun with it though, regardless.
Am I the only one seeing the irony of releasing this game in the market where the planes you shoot and kill were based on ones flown by the Japanese players' fellow countrymen?
I remember playing this game (or maybe a sequel) on arcade machines when I was young. I was never able to make it far, but it was pretty fun! Sadly, arcade machines seem to be slowly dying off.
Early Capcom arcade ports focused more on gameplay than sound. Ghosts n Golbins, Commando, 1942, all great games. I like the NES version of Strider despite it being completely different than the arcade, made it more like Mega Man. Speaking of early Mega Man, that game is hard as balls but so good!!!! The music kicks ass too!
played the arcade version of 1943 first before 1942. I liked 1943 better for a bunch of reasons but mostly for the music. Then I played 1942 on NES and it sounded just like this. 😂 Good game though.
Vegemite is so disgusting. I think it was originally invented to pack bearings on cars, and it somehow accidentally fell on some toast laying around on a garage floor. Then some Australian guy ate it and said, "Hmm, not bad. But it needs more SALT." Fnasty stuff.
holly shit right in the childhood, man this was one of my father's first games on the ness, and one of my first contacts with good videogames when i was like 4. damn mark. also, isnt those annoying sounds kind of morse?
It was for the NES in 1986, the others were “Ghosts ‘N Goblins” and “Commando” were all three were released that same year. The game was not developed by Capcom, it was Micronics, the same developed that made “Ghosts ‘N Goblins”, “Tiger-Heli”, “Athena” and other games, and Capcom published it.
I think of 1942 as my personal meth delivered by my local arcade on my laundry mat. I certain percentage of my pocket change has been invested in to this awesome Capcom kick ass game. Kick ass review man favorite youtube channel.
If you like 1942, try Sky Shark for the NES! That's a really cheap but fun WWII airplane shooter where you fly a P40 Warhawk and shoot airplanes and bomb ground targets and tanks and stuff and it's really tough. But fun! and is like only $5.00 these days!
I thought this game was an insult back in the day and so I promptly returned it and got Trojan instead, which was only marginally better. But at least the music in that didn't make me want to jab my eardrums with flaming hot skewers.

Used to play 1942 between my band's sets at what was Dick Lee's in Bellmawr, NJ.
1987. Long time ago. Long, long time.
I don't normally like war-based games, but I make an exception with "1942" & "1943". These are two excellent shooters, and I'm glad that they're on the "Capcom Classics Collection" disk.
Thank you for all the beautiful memories, Iwata-san.
You'll live forever on in our hearts.
1984... The year of Ghostbusters, Amadeus, and my birth. Good year...
Also the Summer Olympics in LA.
Love this game, one of my favorite shmups and games. Love shmups, they really need some more love. Nice review
When you do a loop, it makes the bass drop sound that's in every movie trailer now. 1942 predicted the future.

Doesn't have the long DERPY intro... thank you!
This is a great game! The footage looks so sharp in this game, I wonder if Mark played this game on the Retron 5?
David Halligan Yes, he did. He indeed does have a Retron 5.
Love the show. What can I send to be placed on the map? Squinted and looks like no pins are in my area. Thank you.
1942 was a good year for 8 Bit airplane warfare.
I remember playing this game (or maybe a sequel) on arcade machines when I was young. I was never able to make it far, but it was pretty fun! Sadly, arcade machines seem to be slowly dying off.
There's one sequel for every year of WWII. I'd say the best one is 1943 Kai.
Reminds me of the Sega Master Syestem's Bomber Raid

Have you seen the C64 version of this game? It looks even better and has great music and sound...
I wonder how much the Japanese like WWII games, can't imagine they would be very keen on wanting to remember it.
Beep! Beep! Beepbeepbeep! Beep! Beep! Beepbeepbeep!
Gotta wonder who's te briljant composer of this.
Great review Mark! Hello from Sydney Australia!!!
Oh man, i forgot about this game, and i think it's the first videogame i've ever played :D
Hehe, Land Down Under...
Now here's a game I was actually pretty good at in the arcade.
best audio since then FAIRCHILD CHANNEL F.
Love this game.
There's 1944: The Loop Master, It came on Betamax and DLC from Sega Channel, or not.
Capcom's Classic Collection Vol.1, That's good!
1943: The Battle of Midway, That's a direct campaign of Capcom againts Mortal Kombat and maybe McDonald's Soda.
This was before Luftwaffe in Thrillville, a similar game, existed.
I personally think that the best version is on the MSX2. Mark! You should start making some reviews for that system! :)
Yeah, awesome game for sure, and so are all the sequels he mentioned.
Now I know where they got the idea of 'skyshark' from.
This port was actually only published by Capcom, and developed by Micronics. Probably the main reason the sound is so poor.
Micronics was the developer of this game, and Capcom published it for the NES. Micronics made ports of Capcom games for the NES.
I had a kangaroo burger a couple weeks ago. Best way I can describe is like a firm piece of high quality beef.
Pretty tasty

OMG ! This thing in the arcade ate sooooo much of my.....errr... parents' hard earned cash. So good !
played the arcade version of 1943 first before 1942. I liked 1943 better for a bunch of reasons but mostly for the music. Then I played 1942 on NES and it sounded just like this. 😂 Good game though.
Vegemite is like a Cenobite but made of vegetables. :)
isn’t a cenobite a type of monk?
Vegemite is so disgusting. I think it was originally invented to pack bearings on cars, and it somehow accidentally fell on some toast laying around on a garage floor. Then some Australian guy ate it and said, "Hmm, not bad. But it needs more SALT." Fnasty stuff.

No dislikes on a popular video, from a popular UA-camr. This is a miracle.
Never played the arcade but I had this for the NES back in the day. Played the hell out of it. Good choice man. 👍
Thanks for sharing and great review! This is an overall good port.
Its a good port. But the annoying "music" is pretty bad.
This was actually one of the very first Capcom games, wasn't it?
It was for the NES in 1986, the others were “Ghosts ‘N Goblins” and “Commando” were all three were released that same year. The game was not developed by Capcom, it was Micronics, the same developed that made “Ghosts ‘N Goblins”, “Tiger-Heli”, “Athena” and other games, and Capcom published it.
In 1942 I invented the shoe, in 1942...

The NES version is much better and different from the Famicom version.

Capcom... Capsule Command? .. okay...
Such a good first NES release from Capcom.
Nice to not hear a repeated loop about the horrors of Micronix! (So much hate!)
Wow, the sound were extra special annoying.
Do you remember when capcom was good
1943 is way better than this
1943 is SOOOooooo much better though

I thought this game was an insult back in the day and so I promptly returned it and got Trojan instead, which was only marginally better. But at least the music in that didn't make me want to jab my eardrums with flaming hot skewers.
Fun factoid! This game is based on the Stephen Spielberg movie starring John Belushi. (just kidding....or am I??)
Haven't watched yet... But if you mention robots or flamethrower I fuckin swear...
I think he mentioned robots
