I love how you convinced me it really is a "mechanic" to use a demo! Or to dodge a demo. It is not cheating nor cheap. You need to learn, just like any other mechanics how/when to use it and how/when to dodge it! Love it! Keep it up man! You're awesome! :)
But it is a mechanic. Since you can fail it, it requires spatial awareness, it requires crazy game sense and it's obviously a dangerous juggle between where you should be, according to conventional positioning, and where you "can" be to cause the most damage to the defense. It's totally a high level mechanic as low level player´s mental buffer top out as it follows (Listed as you get better) 1) Your learn to control your car (Full concentration required 2) You learn to control your car and keep and eye on the ball (Attention Divided 50/50) 3) Basic controlling of the car becomes second nature (you have more mental bandwidth for scouting the field) 4) Good car control + Speed, awareness suffers as your mind can´t follow the rest of the field at this new speed 5) Great car control, good recovery, Makes adjustments in speed without noticing to always stay in a good place (Game sense and reads take all your mental bandwidth tho') 6) Great car control, almost automatic reads, With the remaining bandwidth you start looking for demo chances (but you don´t have a plan B in case it fails) 7)Great car control, recovery, speed and awareness with the remaining bandwidth you read oportunities (demo and goal) with the higher success rate and don't overcommit 8) The sledge level, all of the above comes natural and your remaining bandwidth can be used to read opponent intent to cause reverse 50/50s while still mantaining position I don't intend to over sell Sledge skills, but there aren't many steps above this point. From this point onwards the only skill that separates top players is their mechanical skill, reaction time and timing
It bugs me when people go, “Wow” when I demo them. I mean Psyonix put it into the game on PURPOSE. Don’t get angry at me for using a completely fair mechanic in game!!
@@cheesecakecheese7556 Don't get mad at them, laugh at them. If someone gets triggered over a simple demo, you can easily tilt them out of existence. This isn't the most moral way of beating your opponent, but hey, they don't understand simple machanics, their problem.

C3 here Sledge. Love the videos, tips and humour, and i have to say... When people start going for jumps or laterals i employ the secret, secret technique... The crazy bronco. Just stop beneath them and send them to Narnia or at least take them out of the next play. It's dumb, it's childish, but boy if it's not satisfying lol
I love to do that to helpless people I once went supersonic to a guy backpost and he jump but I slowed down and just drove the guy in his own net and he couldnt move since i was blocking him and when he just got out of my attack the ball came to the net and he barely missed and he got a glimmer of hope (but he was never gunna save it) and we scored and then he left. It was beautiful.
@@Hdx64 O trust me I gave him hope, him leaving the game so fast after the ball just goes in and being 1 mm off the ball makes me know he had so much hope.
This style got me 1800 mmr solo queuing in 3s. This is a fantastic break down. And I think sledge is being more humble in how much time it takes to get a consistent read of this. You really have to think a few steps ahead. There are levels. While paying attention to your team mates as well as maintaining good enough ball control to change a play on the fly into a shot, flick, clear, stall, infield pass, etc. The fundamentals are wayyyyy more important. I dont even touch flip resets as reliable options. Only to stall if my team mates are both up with me. The time and situations to set up those plays are a lot more restrictive until you have solid fundamentals and a variety of options to attack. Its linear. Which is why scrub is so lethal with them. His defense, offensive, transitional speed, boost efficiency, and observation is world class. Once he knows you're in a dead zone he'll predict panic for a quick response if you're last back and he knows you have no boost so he'll just shoot. He literally thought out 3 steps ahead of his opponent. Proactive plays and dodges and stringing together meaningful offensive or defense while maintaining possession takes a lot of focus. The only thing I'd like to add is picturing playing defense in a zone style. Gotta think where your team mate is as well as your opponent. When should you attack or disengage or feint challenge? What is the best position to be in if he cleanly clears or dribbles? Where is your 3rd? Is your posture indicating you're going to challenge or leave it or stall to reset rotation? All in a few seconds this happens. Gotta have an order of priorities to prep with for likely outcomes.
You just violated Sun Tzu's most basic principle: "Whatever you do, don't reveal all of your techniques in a youtube video, you fool, you moron!" - Sun Tzu, The Art of War
I like this, never seen a video where someone talks about avoiding demos instead of using them. besides this is just a good practice in overall awareness.
So basically, you're so well-known for demos that people just chase you down, giving yourself and your teammates 1 less defender to deal with the whole time. Now I see the true worth of demos.
Yo man you are criminally underated. Great tutorials and coaching on a subject no one else covers. Maybe you and some other underrated coaches and creators could form a rocket league university. (Seriously though that subscriber percentage sucks, WTH guys sub already)
One thing that’s good to keep in mind with demos is that sometimes it actually makes sense to force a demo by driving in front of someone or allowing someone to demo you so you can get back to your side if you don’t have boost or find yourself out of position etc. As long as you’re behind the ball and other team is pushing, if it’s not urgent Then come up behind Their middy player so that no one is there for pass giving your striker possession Also remember you have a regular bump in Arsenal if you need to knock a guy but don’t want to put him in his back corner just hit brakes very slightly before impact and if just under supersonic he’ll go flying especially if you get a clean hit (pretend like you’re trying To power clear a ball and that guy is the ball and it will literally take him out of position for as long as multiple full rotation cycles which should be enough time for your team to get possession AND score. Remember though unlike demo the bump takes away your momentum so make sure you don’t need to be somewhere in position in the next 5 or so seconds . Keep this in mind on the flip side, just because you have chance for easy demo it’s not always smart. Let’s say a player is out of position or bunched up too close with a teammate well whatever mistake, allow them to stay there so that mistake can be taken advantage of by teammates.
Turns out this video has helped me so much! At my rank is easy to see 85% of these goofballs get aggro and go around trying to smash you and it's super easy to avoid it's hysterical. All they do is drive around a million miles an hour and miss and miss it's just brilliant thank you.
I'm glad they aren't going away I love when people chase me and I frustrate them by dodging I watched a lot of your early videos about the demoing and dodging then players love telling me that they are reporting to which I reply "Reporting me for using a game mechanic? awesome" it's so funny how people get triggered by this
Thank you sledge! I hate it when my doubles partner makes a perfect bump/demo to help in a shot and then the other team goes off in the chat! Let's get rocket league to add a demo-tracking certification to items!
Now I just need to convince my teammates to watch your content and stop complaining about getting demolished. This video is just on point. Keep it up. ^^ Also you got my sub. :P
Baiting is the hardest avoidance technique that gets me when I'm on the demo grind. I love though when the opponent jumps or tries to avoid the demo and then even without demoing him he's already put himself out of the play long enough for a goal
Saying demos are dirty or whatever, is like saying you can't kill other people in CS:GO. Seriously, SMH. Great vid! I rarely, rarely get demoed because my cam and car never stay stationary but i totally forgot about the lateral dodge. Gotta remind myself of using that more.
What's funny is that in around season 8-9 or so, I was using the "Sledge collateral" technique and it worked fine until I realized the faster plays become the worse this is gonna become so I need to think of better strats. Instead I opted for just, driving around the opponent because that seemed to work best and keep my car from getting out played while I was out of the way. But sure enough the "Sledge Collateral" stopped working after a certain point and so I switched up my strat and I started winning against car chasers again and my rank only went up.
The demos I'm loving at the moment are the fake demos. Player In net, with you coming right at them clearly going for the bump or demo, but slamming on the brakes right before contact so they jump or slightly move, which leaves them vulnerable giving you an easy bump and clear on them. Edit: this also is a counter to the lateral dodge counter shown late in the vid (typed this out before the ending). Loving the fake bump/demo atm
I think it was Firstkiller vs Jbot on JohnnyBoi's stream a few months back where First used a backwards wave dash out of an aerial recovery to dodge a demo and score. That was one of the nuttiest outplays I have ever seen
