- To my knowledge this is the best existing video from the golden era of Sergio Mendes' Brasil '66. Sergio's music has made the world a lot prettier indeed. Vocals by Lani Hall and Karen Philipp and the original Brasil '66 musicians. Sergio and the band still perform and record today. I shot a 40 minute video of their recent concert in Amsterdam, Holland.

The girls had some of the best harmony in music at the time. So glad Lani's been blessed with a 55 year marriage and I wish her and Herb many more years of that.

I remember my dad surprised my mom with a brand new '68 T-Bird coupe (white...no vinyl top thank God)...loaded at the time with all the options, including the 8-track stereo tape player. My parents loved Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66...this song was on an album that was released in '69...of all the tapes they had, that album was played to death in that beloved car. Happy times.
I was 6 years old when this song hit the scene. I remember thinking "what a cool tune". These girls have the sexiest voices. Thank God for the 60's!!!

I LOVED Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66, as a young 13 year old, and still do now. I had to have each new record album every year, and would get them for Christmas and my birthday.
When a concert was announced, my mom went on the first day and got tickets on the front row for me, my twin sister, my brother, my Aunt Coco and herself. It was the first time having front row seats, and the concert was a Dream!

Beautiful, and l used their beauty to sneak up onto the stage, when the concert was over. The Security guard was transfixed on the ladies as they took their bows, that l was able to sneak in on the stair where he stood, and go through a fabric curtain.
I spoke with Sergio, told him how much l loved his music and that l had All of his albums. He gave me his autograph and also introduced me to Lani and Karen and the band.
They were all So very nice, and All gave me their autographs.
I then heard my Mom trying to explain that l was backstage, but he didn't believe her. "Lady, no one
Ever gets past me!" Then l said, Mom l'm back here, he comes to grab me, but Sergio told him it was
Alright, Please let them all pass!"
So, all of my family got to meet and speak with them all! It was night l will Never forget, mainly because they all were so Sincerely nice!
Saw Lani and Herb Alpert last year in concert. She sings as beautifully as ever! She is married to Herb Alpert.

I was born in 1962 but remember this song when I got a little older! Wow what a great song, it reminds me of Saturday mornings as a small kid in our kitchen with the radio going and my parents listening too this great music. I can listen too this tune every day and not get sick of it, it just makes my day!!!
Me too- I first heard it as a classical guitar instrumental in the late-60's/early-70's while in grade school. Fast forward to the mid-80's when I heard this version on the radio while stationed in Bermuda. For the longest I wanted to find out who it was and hear it again. I only just now found it via the Google Find Song app by humming it-

So true, a fact, except for his wife Gracinha Leporace, Karen Philipp was the only vocalist he had that actually learned Portuguese Fluently😎😙. 2 reasons those learning Fluent Portuguese is quite difficult Karen was/still is quite intelligent. She actually wanted to know what she was singing. 2nd, she got help by the Bassist in Brasil'66 Rubens Bassini (RIP) who she dated & lived with for a couple years. Karen & Lani probably the best vocalists ever😎🎶🎶🎤🎤👱👧

I saw Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 in October 1967. I was on leave prior to shipping out for my first tour in Vietnam. My fiancé was a graduate student at the University of Texas and got front row tickets for us. Best show I have ever seen. Lisa worked for the University and got us backstage after the show.
We stood and talked with Lani Hall for around 15 minutes. Lani had two cokes and chewed on her straw. When she left to go, she put her drink down and I pulled the straw and put it in my pocket. I carried that straw through most of two tours as a good luck charm.

I was into Brazil 66 From the get-go. Their music created a life long love of Brazilian music. Lani Hall’s voice is so unique and outstanding!
Great Arrangement. Vocals and of course instrumentation played so well by a Latin Genius. Back when this song was recorded I was on my way to serve my country. Viet Nam Bound. All I can say is WOW! oh yeah, growing up in the 60's my dad had this on the radio....But Sergio was definitely in the Burt Bacharach league....he was great!
I can't remember the year for this song but I couldn't have been any more than six or seven when I fell in love with this melody. I'm now 57 and still love bossa nova to this day and can listen to the music for hours on end.

My husband got us front row tickets in 2019 in Honolulu when Herb Alpert and Lani Hall performed. It was magical and dreamy! ❤❤
The truth is probably felt she owed him. Mendes fired her and his first 66 Brasill backup band and singers, inc her. Alpert stepped in ( now remember he is co-head of A&M basically Mendes boss) and "convinced" Mendes to keep ONLY her to go with the new band. So not really.

Don't be such a cynic. True or not, she and Janice are the main reason the group made it so big. They gave the songs life and gave the group a uniqueness not found in any other group at that time. Their magic still goes on today and has outlived them as a group.

I own most of their albums...discovered this wonderful group in the mid 60s during high school. My son who's now 38 tells me he remembers me playing Brasil'66 music in the car back in his childhood! ⭐
I was 14 when this song came out and I still love it. This was my favorite group of all time and I have multiple copies of the lp's and cd's.
They do not make music this beautiful today. This is so wonderful to hear as I grew up listening to this kind of music as a child and I still love it. The music they make today can not compare with such raw talent as these folks. I think we have to face it the we will just have to keep listening to the old music for quality singers .

Herb Alpert is a lucky man. I love Lani Hall's voice. So smooth, and so full of a harmonic attribute that I love. Karen Carpenter, and Anne Murray had a similar quality to their voices. As if there was a little extra resonance in their sound, though they sang so effortlessly. As for Karen Philipp, I would have followed her anywhere back in the time they were making these records, just to see her dancing on stage while she was singing, and I was probably about 11 or 12 years old back then. I'm pretty sure my piggy bank would have been broken, and all my weekend gardening job money spent on that beautiful blonde.

"The Master," Sergio Mendes! So glad I had a chance to play this fabulous song on my daily midday radio show on WHB Kansas City in 1969 summer. These days in 2020, my wife asked me "Where did you get the idea to put a sign on our door that says 'welcome to paradise, population 2?'" Thanks Sergio! I can hear "Pretty World" playing in my head every time I come home.
Saw them at San Diego State in 1969; fell in love with the music; so much that I spent a month in Brazil. Went to see Brazil '76 devastated to find Lani missing! She and Herb made the sound of Brazil!

I really like Sergio Mendes music, thanks to my mother. She was a working mom and heard it on her AM radio in her car, on the way home sometime in 1967. She bought a couple of albums and we loved them both. Later in 1968 I was sent to Sao Paulo, Brasil to work as missionary for the mormon church and was kind of disappointed to find that not many people knew him in Brasil--he really started out in New York in the early 60's. I was home by late 1970 and saw him in concert a couple of times then not again for years when I lived in Las Vegas. He still put on a great show with many of the same band members and his wife, Gracinha on vocals, along with other Brasileira women. I missed him here in Utah in 2015 because I was going with grandkids on a camping trip, and let me tell, you I'd rather see Sergio!! I read somewhere that he's working on a new album for release in 2019 but haven't heard anything more.
The music of Sergio Mendes , Brasil 66, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass really did and do make the world prettier. God Bless and thank you all.

Fell in love with this group IMMEDIATELY. He 's had some real good vocalists through the years but these two were the best. This is 2020....I hope he's still performing.
Lani Hall is off- the- charts cute. And she's a beautiful singer as well. love this group since I first bought Look Around album as a teenager.
i remember the first time i saw them on tv and my jaw dropped to see Lani Hall and hear that hip cowbell in Daytripper, a song i hadn't heard before.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this music is called SAMBA. Sergio was an absolute MASTER at writing/creating it. We will never see a man of his incredible talent and gift for music again. I feel blessed to have grown up in a time(60's and 70's) when he was popular and appreciated. And he's STILL out there sharing his gift. Just wish he'd come to the Midwest...
All the music lessons and studies and yet, I have to admit that this is my favorite song. Lots of great music from the 60's but, this one always makes me feel good. Sometimes feeling good is more important than technical analysis or social comment. "Pretty World" is a retreat we all need once in a while.

You feel good because it simply embodies "beautiful" !!! And you're right WE ALL NEED MORE . Always loved them , always will.....but loved their original line up best with the stunning and super classy "Janis Hansen" who, sadly we lost a few years ago. Just pure gorgeous music will never go out of vogue !

My late brother had a little slice of heaven with his wife out in the country of southern New Jersey and, a grossly underrated musician in his lifetime, had exquiste taste when it came to finding the best musical picks. This one was dear to his heart both for the lyrical content (I painted a watercolour of their back garden which I called 'Paradise - Population: 2' as a gift to them) and for the musical sublimity. Dig how the start of each verse goes straight to the 4th and then has to make its way back to the tonic; it evokes a sense of motion; but where is it going? That's the sweet spot. And listen to the drums! - sublime as well.
Every time I hear this version of Pretty World, it put's a huge smile on my face. True MAGIC !!!
