I just realized in this song that Satriani is the absolute master of making the "resolution" of a melodic line drawn out while keeping you interested in nonrepetitive ways the entire time. That's a lot of talent to pull that off.
Joe Satriani's Crystal Planet album has an intriguing backstory that involves a pivotal moment of inspiration while he was in Spain. As the story goes, Satriani was watching the famous Running of the Bulls in Pamplona when the core riff for the song “Crystal Planet” came to him. He was caught up in the intense energy and chaos of the event, which sparked a flow of creativity that led to the birth of that iconic riff. Satriani has shared in interviews that witnessing the raw, primal nature of the event, the surge of adrenaline, and the unpredictable energy of the bulls racing through the streets all combined to create this moment of inspiration. The atmosphere of the Running of the Bulls resonated with something deeper inside him, aligning with his love for crafting music that feels otherworldly and adventurous. That moment in Spain became the catalyst for an entire album, Crystal Planet, released in 1998, which many consider one of his best works. The title track itself captures a sense of speed, danger, and excitement-much like the experience he witnessed. The album overall has a cosmic, sci-fi feel, filled with imaginative riffs and layered compositions that explore vast, uncharted musical terrain. Crystal Planet stands as a testament to Satriani’s ability to channel his environment into his art. The way he transformed the raw energy of an event like the Running of the Bulls into a creative force that shaped a whole album shows his unique creative process-one that goes beyond technicality and taps into life’s visceral, unfiltered moments. This experience gave birth to an album that remains a defining work in his career, pushing his boundaries as a guitarist and composer into new realms of creativity.
I remember being a kid and bringing this album home as soon as it came out. It melted my brain! Great live performance and awesome mix. Could hear all the drum tones spatially and clearly. Wow! Instantly hit the replay button. Lol
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite Joe Satriani songs ever! Blessed by Valhalla, adored by millions on Earth. This Alien has a welcoming home forever here on Earth and we all beg, "please don't ever leave us!"
My all time favorite Satch song and this version is amazing! 4:19 to the end is one of the greatest parts ever played on rock guitar. I can't turn it up loud enough!
You are by far my favorite guitar player. Yes there are many and yes there are some that may be faster but none, and I mean none can master the melody like you. You make your music speak without a single word. Thank you Satch for all. The years of music 🎼...I’ve seen you 3 times...I hope to see u one more time before I die! 🤘🏻 rock On! U r the man!
Mike Keneally on Keyboards... If you've ever seen the first G3 DVD, he played on Steve Vai's set, and came back to sing for the 3 guitar jam at the end. Incredible musician, to keep up with both guys on either instrument...
I get a kind of inspirational feeling when I listen to this number. The brilliant, speedy as well as powerful play of Satriani is the masterpiece itself. Other members' performance is also great.
the first time I ever heard of satriani was in 8th grade. I listened to this album on the way to Disney world on my 8th grade band trip and it was on cassette tape on a Walkman. I think about that trip everytime i hear this album. let's just say I got my first guitar for Christmas that year lol.
I think Joe might be the best live performer ever. His tone is absurdly tasty. I won't even mention his technique, because it's perfect as usual. I lied.
The studio-version is really out of this world; almost impossible to improve live. The apotheose is really like a machinegun spreading everything there is; there is really nothing moore. I really think that psysically not doable live, but Satch makes a great effort, though. My favourite song to hear just before i tried to make a great sporting performance myself. Thank you Joe, for that!
When I listened to that thing for the first time, it wss like global musical collapse and complete phase shift for me. Just unreal music. For me its like 3 hour action movie, about some conquers from earth came through space to invade a legendary Crystal Planet populated by crystallic robots and vicious insects, abd there is an epic fight for the life there. Totally crazy.
I think the Live in San Francisco version is my favorite. you just can't duplicate the tone he gets on his chrome guitar he used to play before it was stolen.
4:16 - 4:42 boggles my mind every time, not sure of the actual difficulty of the riff as I am only a casual amateur guitar player, but the placement couldn't be more perfect!

Playing drums with Joe's band looks epic fun. No concern for obliterating a singer; just go wild.
Man when he kicks in that fuzz/Octavia pedal in this solo I just want to scream “F$$k Yes!!!!” It’s such a perfect sound for that part!
That finish... That fucking finish is Epic
I went to a show about 2000ish. It was King's X, Joe Satriani, then Dream Theater. What a show.
Wow. Wish I had been there. Must have been a blast.
Always so melodic. Fierce and fantastic.
man thanks for the awesome upload. this is by far my favorite JS song
Great video!! Joe is an amazing player saw him in TO back in 2006 what a show!!
That ending section. Wow. What a timing and control.
Amazing perfmance, I saw him in Uruguay last year and it was and amazing show!
And to think that he is NOT in Rolling Stones top 100 guitar players of all time, but Willie Nelson #77, and Bonnie Raitt #89, are. Unbelievable. 🤯
Those rankings are bs just popularity contests
And Madonna!
@@realscience948 I've never seen her play the guitar
Fantastique!

This song is underrated in Satch catalog
2019 and still going on.

(B bemol - F)-(x4) (C# - G# - C#) (B bemol - F)-(x4) (G# - D# - G#) and so on
however he just plays the note on the second string (with the right hand), the note on the first string sound using the "hammer on" technique
oh, and the last line is going down from (C# - G# - C#) to (B bemol - F)
equalização ao vivo perfeita... timbres de bateria suculentos
MONSTER!!!
sasquatch arms at 4:21
Joe, impresionante como siempre.
wow!
Junto con "on peregin wins" una de las mejores canciones que escuche en mí vida...
