I love the way he plays these songs slightly differently each time he goes live. Just the odd section, more taps, more bends. Every one is an original. And he LOVES to play, that's so clear. Best guitarist the World will ever know.
You see, I love improvisation and it's an essential skill in a musician and of course I love it with guitarists, but there are times when a piece is composed with a certain riff, a certain melody and indeed, sometimes a certain LEAD. We all know Satch can legato his way up and down scales and modes, highlight chord changes, all that stuff. But for me, there's a very specific actual solo/lead that he played on the studio record of a piece like 'War' that I think is wholly part of the piece, it's not just 'some take', although it may have been that at the time. There are other pieces in Satch's huge catalog that I feel are much more 'free' for reinterpretation, and almost any fan would acknowledge that a piece like Cool #9, within the overall structure; is just waiting for whatever Dorian-based ideas Satch can throw at it each time he plays it live. But something like 'Crush of Love'? Nope, it has to be played as it is.
Incredible guitarist and human being was able to meet him and Eric Johnson, both on the same tour it was such an awesome day! War is my Favorite of all my faves of Satriani
@@DanielVerberne I'm two years late to the party here but just want to say I wholeheartedly agree. I was so wanting to hear the "studio" version played the same "live". 10 seconds into the heart of the "war" I was disappointed. Back to the studio version I go.
The Extremist is (for me) the best Joe's album, and one of the greatest instrumental albums ever! Joe, You're not only guitar but musical-emotional genius. Thank you.
All right, we all know and agree that Satch is a guitar god, but let's not forget his great band. They are the guys who make it possible for Joe to go crazy and come up with all these amazing tunes.
I remember air-guitaring that riff through all the changes to my sister and her boyfriend. They looked at me like I was a deranged dude...which I was... 😎
I don't understand you folks. The solo here is just an improv - don't you miss the studio version of the solo? THAT was the War solo, not some random blues solo then switching the wah-wah on for the legato part. I wish Satch would honour the recorded parts rather than fucking with them. As I've said before, there are pieces in Satch's vast repertoire like Cool #9 that totally lend themselves to an almost jazzy approach; to a free-structured, free-flowing re-interpretation of the piece within the overall Dorian-blues structure; but there's also pieces that are awesome BECAUSE of the specific part Joe laid down at recording.
I used to be a fan of Joe Satriani, too, but after he threw out his American pedals and started buying Chinese pedals, the sound completely disappeared from him, the sound became dirty and bad Since then he needs to throw out everything Chinese and get his happiness back
Joe, Now this is what we call - A kickass video ! We do not want another cartoon network - Live in Paris DVD video format. Stick to this, we all love to see your fingers at work.
Alan and Mike have really come together nicely with Jeff Joe and Galen. This is best line up. Alan attacks and gives awesome presence and sound. I have heard and love Stu and Dave. This is something different. Like Matt Bisonette on red bull. Great BAND Joe Satriani. MY favorite line up after all these years. And to think he was crying behind those sunglasses cause of his mom. My music hero. And I'm a drummer.
I love that there are no costumes, no gimmicks, no fanfare!!! Just as you see artists!!!! Joe and his band doing great music!!!!!!! i suppose the video in the background is fanfare but not so much compared to what is the norm today. Go Joe!
this is the heaviest and raunchiest i've heard Joe's songs sound live! The sound and chemistry and energy here is palpably potent!!! This is how this song deserves to be staged and experienced by us and the band. WOW ... War sounds so #$&%$%$ good here!!!!
The in the pocket groove that lays down a solid canvas for melodic melt your face off guitar is just mesmerizing🤘🤘🤘‼️‼️‼️And the melody of War is stellar🤲✌️🤲
It's just a shame it's in the wrong tuning, the effect is not the same as the studio version. Meant to be all a half step lower, which gives all the instruments a darker and quite different tone. But .....most fans don't seem to care.
Yep Vai is surely Joe's prodidgy, He found fame before his Master but never forgot the face of his master (Old school people any where in the world had great values even in the fame industry). He Introduced Joe at many gigs and never once claimed that he was greater than Joe. Mostly Joe's early great work went unnoticed specially the album ' Flying in a blue dream' which till date most contemporary rock guitarist arguably say that was his greatest work. Man 3 Cheers for Steve Vai too
Look up three note per string scales. Then figure out which scales correspond to that passage and visualize each block as a little piece within the whole scale, and how those scales fit together. They have specific repeating patterns that help out when you are playing fast because instead of looking at each note individually, you are instead looking at a section of repeating notes.
Love it. Seeing this performance again, brings back some awesome memories. Going to this concert in Brussels was one of the best decisions ever, especially because I got to see the man backstage. He appears to be such a normal man and yet he blows your mind away like it's nothing.
I saw Brother Joe LIVE in San Diego many many years ago. I've always loved his "Strange and Beautiful" music!! He signed a guitar for a friend of mine just months before he passed away. What an Honor!! Where is Satch now? Does anybody know? Please tell me. Forever, I will be "Flying in a Blue Dream" while "Surfing with the Alien" in all of my creative pursuits. Hail Satch!!
About 2 years before the first part of the "Lord of the rings" was released, i assume it was in 1998/9 - a friend and a mentor at that time told me: "That riff, and now imagine the army (of orcs) marching towards minas tirith... still gives me the chills.
holy shit..his best work. i'm takin the kids. the good ears love his big music. one step ahead as always joe. band is super tight. campo and joe are a force. way to stick with your drummer buddy. from drum samples to this...incredible.
U r the man...the melodies u write are so beautiful and expressive. I just bought ur 30th anniversary guitar along with a 50 watt Mesa boogie! The croc...bc it’s red!
From the over-the-shoulder shot, it looks like Satch has a rather high string action... Those Ibanez' have a rather flat radius (bigger radius?), so why the higher action, when the risk of flatting out a string is smaller to begin with? Tastes? What he is used to? Super strong fingers that have no problem in that department? A combination? Starts a 2:36 btw.
I have only been playing guitar for around 4 years, but Joe Satriani has to be my main influence to play guitar. I have never witnessed a more mindblowing performance than any Satch song. It's not just the tone, or the guitar, or the faces.. It's the excellent songwriting this guy does, it is the coolest thing in the world to be able to make simple stuff sound so awesome. Joe Satriani is my biggest influence!!
I used to be a fan of Joe Satriani, too, but after he threw out his American pedals and started buying Chinese pedals, the sound completely disappeared from him, the sound became dirty and bad Since then he needs to throw out everything Chinese and get his happiness back
No, it's not only you. it was exactly a year since his mother passed away. Joe said that he didn't sleep a wink the night before this concert and was a ''nervous wreck''. I think he put on a truly amazing show, given the sad circumstances.
I love the way he plays these songs slightly differently each time he goes live. Just the odd section, more taps, more bends. Every one is an original. And he LOVES to play, that's so clear. Best guitarist the World will ever know.

I would put the Extremist and Crystal Planet right up there..
I was so glad he added War on the Saturated tour. This my favourite live version. Joe and the band are on top form. 🤘
the riff at 1:59 is the grooviest ever composed ...
key change?
Top je
OMG.. this keyboard line changed the game.
Joe is from another planet and I’m not sure what planet but I bet they all play guitar. The greatest without a doubt
👽🎸🎶
Jeff Campitelli is one of my favourite drummers....I just love his whole sound, and his drum parts work perfectly with Joes awesome guitar work :p
Joe has called him the human metronome.
He fits Joes style perfectly. Love it !!
Jeff is a perfect fit.
Love this band.
Satch is one of most talented guitarists on the planet. He always plays amazingly and gets incredible tones.
All right, we all know and agree that Satch is a guitar god, but let's not forget his great band. They are the guys who make it possible for Joe to go crazy and come up with all these amazing tunes.
The best of all Guitarist!!.
The best musician, and person. Satriani is amazing.
1:58 That's the most bad-ass riff I've ever heard.
I remember air-guitaring that riff through all the changes to my sister and her boyfriend. They looked at me like I was a deranged dude...which I was... 😎
I,m from iran and think joe with this song speak from past and future.
I agree with you brother..
Greetings from indonesia🇮🇩
Agree. Greetings from Israel 😀
War is coming to Iran it seems….let’s hope peace prevails!
A fan since Surfing with the Alien...saw him in Seattle on the Extremist tour. I'll never forget it. Legend.
loving the marshalls!
THAT SOLO!!! Oh my God!!! Such a Master !!
Too right!😎

That keyboard player really adds something.

My favorite guitar player of all times. Always amazing. Oh my God. I'm going to buy a TV 3D and a Blue Ray 3D only to watch it at home several times.

2:45 gives me goosebumps every time. Such a vicious riff.
It's just a shame it's in the wrong tuning, the effect is not the same as the studio version. Meant to be all a half step lower, which gives all the instruments a darker and quite different tone. But .....most fans don't seem to care.
the time where that song was made, I had the biggest loud speaker in my room. Awesome song blasting through my speakers.

So bad ass... this dude absolutely rips...
I love the way the keyboard doubles with the melody guitar after the solo. Love that sound.
Saw Satch in 1989 at the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati, California. He just gets better and better.
I like this tone!!!
Bravo sir JOe......astig!!!!!!!!!!!!

Temon !!! grande Satriani
That final note I never backed down but my finger callus always succumbed and fell off ha ha. Hope you are loving your instrument. J
Gracias Joe por tu música y arte

The Ultimate Master! I don't play guitar, but I sure don't hear any mistakes with Joe's playing.
What Can you Say ? Joe is a Maestro ...........
Love it. Seeing this performance again, brings back some awesome memories. Going to this concert in Brussels was one of the best decisions ever, especially because I got to see the man backstage. He appears to be such a normal man and yet he blows your mind away like it's nothing.

I still believe this to be his best composition
Rio de Janeiro, the best show of Satriani!
I had the riff from this song stuck in my head constantly from 2006-2008. No joke, and I still love this song.
U r the man...the melodies u write are so beautiful and expressive. I just bought ur 30th anniversary guitar along with a 50 watt Mesa boogie! The croc...bc it’s red!
