Damn this is so interesting. Thank you for filming this and uploading. Hard to imagine how different life is in a place this isolated and with less than 100 residents. Truly a different lifestyle from mine.
Fascinating that there are two retailers (the main grocery store and the little store), as well as a post office, washeteria, health center, city hall, and school in a community of only around 100 people. So great you got to see it all!
Wait…. So you can literally WALK from Alaska / North America to Russia / Asia? That’s fantastic!!! Wouldn’t it be great if we could all get along? 😢 What an amazing opportunity! I bet when there’s no camera on, the people from Уэлен and Wales, AK just meet on one of the Diomede islands and have a party. Wouldn’t that be AWESOME? 🥳
Correct, you can walk to Russia in the winter when the ocean is frozen. Or just drive your snowmobile across. I was tempted. I think the natives get along with others. They were peaceful people when I visited.
I just stumbled across this little island when I was looking up Barrow AK and their 24 hour daylight, which I find so fascinating! I am glad I found your video, thank you!!
Cool!! I wish I could go on this flight. Thanks for showing us this! I'm all the way down in North Missouri and so I would have not ever seen what this looks like if you hadn't of shared this footage. ☺ 💯 ♥
Hey, this was such a lovely and authentic video. Loved it ❤️ I am planning to go here in September mid. But I don’t see any means/options available online to get there - do you have any leads? And is it safe for solo female travelers? Any idea?
Yes, it’s totally safe. You just have to go to the Bering Air website and get a flight from Nome to Diomede. But check about accommodations. It’s basically like a village of 100 people and it’s just a few families living there.
Hey bro I'm from Sri Lanka? I just came across a documentary about the Diomede island. So when I started reading it, it was interesting and tempted me to stay there at least for a day. Bro, seriously I am glad I found this video but I have few questions that Is it possible to walk to little Diomede from big Diomede during winter? If yes, is it legal? If it is, what are the procedures to cross from little Diomede to big Diomede? Do you know anything about it?
It’s possible to walk on the ice in winter. It’s 3 miles, so it would take one hour. But it’s another country, so I don’t think it’s legal. Big Diomede is a military island too, so all the locals have been displaced to the mainland. You probably will need permission.
@@JaysWorldTravels I live in Tver, it is close to Moscow. Have you been to Russia before? I'd love to visit Alaska someday, I've been watching some of your videos it looks cool there, so isolated, love it.
This is about right. I flew out of Bethel from 1998 to 2000. I retired from Southwest at 51. Aviation was very good to me. We used to call our 172 the “chicken”. Lol.
No.It is not a river it is a huge strait with ice cold water. Even when it freeze there is no solid ice field between Chukotka and Alaska. It is moving constantly and if you go without helicopter escort, you are in risk of being adrift in the ocean on an ice chunk. Also keep in mind that Russian side of the shore in almost uninhabited and all of the few its towns and villages are under strict control by border guards.
It was 50 F there that day? Wow, it's the same exact day ten years later and it was 31 here this morning (continental US) and maybe 40 now in the afternoon.
I was exploring and messing with google earth until I found this island. I was very curious about the community and wondered what it'd be like to live there.
Great video. Just for comparison purposes in Chile we have a $5,18 USd per gallon of diesel with a $516 USd per month legal minimum wage. Today is April 19th 2023.
I don’t think you can get into any country without a visa or passport. Step one for beginning your travels is to get a passport. I recommended this to my friend in Uganda and Tunisia.

Does the video prove that Gleason’s map was indeed mathematically correct and that it is a flat earth I didn’t see not one forward curve or sideways flight to get there just a flat route and everything I seen in view was flat
So from what I understand they moved the civilian population out of Big Diomede where the relatives used to reside and the Russian government removed them all inland into Russia and now Big Diomede only has a military présence. Its a shame that politics has seperated them.
because little dioMede Alaska speaks English, what you are generating is a conflict, you know very well where the lines between Russia pass, so don't cause more Confucianism if you want to be an influencer

Are they Alaskan Inuits? It's my first time seeing a video of them and it seems theyre very decent and nice to hang out with
Yes, their relatives got split and sent to Siberia, so once a year they can reunite for a reunion.
@@JaysWorldTravels ooh good to know they do have Siberian relatives.

The Sony HDR AX-53. But this was my old camera. Not as good quality.

That’s ridiculous. That’s why people have to take public transportation. But as I remember, buses weren’t cheap in Chile.
This is amazing to watch
Yes, very interesting.
This place is so interesting, did you ever see any of the Russian border guards on the other island?
I didn’t see them because you need a binoculars as the other island is 3 miles away. It would have taken an hour to walk over the ice.
Oh man, can't imagine how much they're paying for gas right now!
Great vid!!!
If it was expensive then, it much be much more. Luckily the snow machine doesn’t consume much fuel, but still it’s expensive.
Is there a summer thaw on the island?
Can you walk across the ice to Asia during the winter?
Yes, during the winter you could theoretically walk on the ice to Asia. But I don’t know where you would clear customs.
It is unlikely because ice drifts between the island and Cape Dezhnev.
Terriffic movie, now I am dying to see the view from Big Diomede as well.
I don’t think any vlogger has gone to big diomede.
how do you get in little diomede ?
By airplane in the winter or by helicopter by summer.
I would love one of those Diomede Hoodies....
Interesting idea. I never thought someone would want one.
Can I use a boat in the summer to cross from Russia to Ska?
Ska means?
I watching your Video from Germany
Thanks, I’m always curious where my viewers come from. Greetings from Bolivia this week
what month was it when u were here?
April 2012
Do they have any police there?
Just a VPO=Village Patrol Officer.
What's their occupation? Job etc? How they earn their living?
The standard jobs like teacher, janitor, electrician, plumber, mechanic, water treatment operator, fisherman, etc.
not winning the kids over with celery and raisins?! hahah great video
Haha, good point
Is there a border army there between Alaska and Russia?
Yes, on the Russian side there are 200 troops watching Alaska.
Oh look! There's my husband! Odge Ahkinga!
Thanks Etta. Are you still living up there or did you move to Fairbanks.
Muy interesante pero pon subtítulos en español por favor , saludos

How do they afford $8.00 A gallon gas in diomede? This is puzzling me. How do they make money?
They only use it on their snow machines. They get paid by the government to work in government jobs like school and some private jobs.

It’s flat because we were flying low. You have to be at 45,000 ft to start to see the curvature.

Because tensions are so high with Russia right now, things must be difficult in the Diomedes.
