He’s like the pocket version of Joey Jordinson. He doesn’t do anything incredibly flashy like Joey but he plays so well with the music and creates the power and feel of the songs.
Joey (rip) was like a brutal machine, Jays style feels a bit less like a brutal machine and more like brutal organic. I like both equally. A bit like Slayer with Dave Lombardo and Paul Bostaph. Dave is absolute legend, but I like Paul Bostaph equally. The one may be legend in his regard, but the other is not less but just slightly different style and having to fill that void.
Corey said that since Unsainted was going to be the first single, they wanted it to be as the most radio-friendly as it can be while still having the heaviness. So they toned down the drums a little bit. I think it was the right choice because although the 16th bass drums sound heavy as fuck for the "metal" metal fans, 8th bass drums should bring in more listeners because it is catchier and relatively lighter.
They should've had two versions personally. Like on the album, maybe have this version of Unsainted as a bonus track for like a Japanese edition or something like that.
I was at a concert and was curious if this is the live version they do couldn’t really pay attention to much going on.

Annoyingly there aren't very many good quality drum cams of Mario. Samus plays a lot of Gojira on his live streams so I'd imagine he's seen most of the drumming content already.
Mario has a UA-cam channel, his drum solos there are pretty good quality.

this is from one take they did in the studio, they didnt multiple takes of each song and chose the best takes from the sessions.
and he's using DW 9000 pedals, theyre his go to pedal :)
little side note, even though hes endorsed by SJC, he's using gretsch drums here, not sure if that was his choice, or what the producers had in the studio to get the sound they thought would fit.

I’ve yet to meet an engineer who didn’t want me to hit my drums hard. They tell me to give them solid hits & clean fills and they’ll handle the volume issues.
Clearly, Jay has been doing this for a minute and doesn’t hold back. It also helps that he’s endorsed by companies that will just give him new shit if he breaks stuff.
