The first time I saw Jay playing was when I was 18. He was drumming with Madball, and Eric Moore was playing with another band the same night. It was such a phenomenal night for drums. And Jay was playing a vintage Rogers kit too, which just blew my mind. hahaha What a rad dude!
*_HARD IDOL! Killer… Insane… Brutal… Go beyond! Always respecting the work of the band and leaving its legacy! It's about that and much more! Maximum respect always! Hugs from a big fan of yours here in Brazil brother!_*
Watching this man makes me want to play the drums except I know I can’t come anywhere near this dude he’s my favorite drummer by a good margin keep rocking brother!!!
The studio sessions of Jay all sound phenom and are critical in displaying his power. Note that he’s using the butt of the stick in his left (snare) hand for this recording. Edit : I love these isolated drum sessions.
on the ride bell/tom part i saw him accidently hitting the crash from below every now and then. funny to see that even pros have to deal with these issues :D
Yeah man, in RED FLAG his right stick gets hung up in the bottom of his crash for a moment and nearly pulls it out of his hand. Edit : Consummate pro that he is, he never skipped a beat though.
@jay : Butt-ended left stick... I've always wondered if for mixing it could create problematic inconsistencies in sound between the left and right hand hits, since your right hand has the tip end of the stick instead of the butt end.
hey I'm a sound engineer, and a butt-ended left stick is great for the mix, it gives us that *fat* snare drum sound. Of course, it depends on the song but in heavy music like this it works very well.
@@szmryb Sure, but what happens when a drummer does rolls with both hands (especially if done on the same kit element : hihat, snare, ...) ? Doesn'it sound weird (since the other hand has tip-ended stick) ? Always been wondering about that.
@@djabthrash It does sound a bit odd, but the benefits outweigh the cons. A nice, strong back beat is just more important than a perfectly consistent roll in this kind of music, although I had some drummers disagree with that and that's totally okay, at the end of the day it's the drummers choice to play in whatever way is comfortable for him.
Also, in this song jay isn't playing much rolls, that's why he's playing with his left stick backwards. In some other videos of him playing where the song requires more fast fills he playes with both sticks normal, so it really depends on what fits the song
Did anyone else see that he's holding the sticks upside down? I saw Evgeny Novikov, the drummer of Slaughter to Prevail, doing that. Wonder if Jay saw that too?
Vinnie Paul (PANTERA) drummed with the butt of the sticks his entire career and that’s prolly where Evgeny’s influence came from. Jay is only using the butt in his left (snare) hand and would just be doing it to gain more attack, or punch, for the recording of this particular track. Edit : The man hits so hard already that one wouldn’t think it could make much difference lol.
It's a stack, the brand he uses (Zildjian) has a Cymbal called spiral, and the one Jay has is one of them stacked in a oriental China trash from the same brand, I guess the China is 12" or 14" and spiral is 10" or 12"
Preference. Sticks come in many sizes and weights, Jay uses custom sticks called the 908 Signature, they're medium weight, medium length but thicker than the average 5A sticks they're modeled after more like 5B and slightly heavier in the tips for max energy or as Jay holds them here to use the heavy butt to really make the cymbals shine. He doesn't hold them that way on every song. I used completely different sticks, one was long and thin 6A with a rounded weight-nub above the grip in my left hand and a heavy, short, thick 2B stick with 5 ringed grip-grooves in my right. 5B is the most popular sticks size for metal but everyone is different.
Which end you hold a stick from is never the wrong end it's just a matter of preference and in this case probably for Studio recordings because you get more power and definition in the hits. The drummer for Slaughter to Prevail does it all the time in both hands, I've personally never seen him *not* hold his sticks in reverse
Underrated song from the album
One of my favorites
It's the best. And Acidic.
I think it's awesome that you put out stuff like this for a casual maggot like myself to enjoy. Hearing any tracks separated is always a treat

Yeah with the butt of the stick in his is left hand he's given more fat tone and power we need more studio sessions jay.

So he isn’t playing to a click track and they are all recording the parts together live. So cool to realise that. Super organic feel to the flow.

I’d love to hear what the kit sounds like through the recording without the other instruments
I would give all the money I have, just to see the whole Slipknot's rehearsal... At least on UA-cam 😇

is the left stick upside down or is it like a timbale stick? and follow up question, is there a reason for it? is it a sound thing?
Bagus bang jay.
Jay do have you left stick backwards?
@@HealthyDrummer I’m pretty sure it’s to give his snare hits a more fuller sound
It's a normal thing

the ends of the drum sticks look different? is it upside down?

Why are you not credited for the end so far? You wrote this correct? Performed it. Is this just a mistake or did they really do that?
fuck yeah
anyone know why Jay has one of the sticks backwards? im not a drummer so not sure if its for the sound or what just curious
For getting solid sound even with low hit
@@riskymusicgames figured it may be something like that, thanks for letting me know dude!
Makes the hits harder/more noise

It's for sound engineering purposes to get a crisper and clearer sound when mixing.
