Nyango Star: The Heavy Metal Cat Mascot Saving A Japanese Farm (HBO)

- Опубліковано 29 січ 2025
- Nyango Star is one of Japan’s most popular mascots, but you might know him best as a meme.
He’s an apple that’s been inhabited by the spirit of a dead cat, and he absolutely shreds on the drums. Very cute but also very metal.
Nyango Star is what’s known in Japan as a yuru-chara - which translates loosely to “chill mascot.”
Japanese yuru-chara can represent everything from police departments to restaurants to government initiatives.
Nyango Star represents Kuroishi City - a farming community in Japan’s northern prefecture of Aomori - where the population is declining and aging. But Kuroishi’s mayor is hoping Nyango Star’s viral success will help the shrinking town maintain economic viability.
VICE News went to Japan to meet with Nyango Star and his management team and get an inside look at yuru-chara culture in Japan.

the so called "american mascots" that prowl the Tourst straps for photo and money are NOT real mascots, they are migrants just trying to get photos for money, they work for them selfs with cheep knock off costume's, REAL mascots work for a company, or represent a cooperation, theme part or sports team, with expensive costumes and copyrighted character's,

I think the most interesting and "Japanese" element to this story is when they mention that the guy in the NyangoStar costume doing the drumming is also the creator of the character who owns the trademark and collects its revenue, and his identity is a secret. That's just so different than how a trademark and brand like that would be handled in the West.
The great thing about Nyango Star is that you can't just dress anyone up as Nyango Star unless they're just as talented of a drummer.
It is like Dr Who.

Amen to that ... they gotta shred good on the drums!
Yeah there’s a woman who I think lives in the area who can shred and who is almost definitely Nyango Star for that reason

They're making it seem like he's greedily doing it all for himself pointing out he's making money from Merch. No shit, the man or woman under the costume got to eat, pay for rent and transportation. Under the costume is another person like us that needs to make a living, take care of family and save for future. While all this is happening, the city is helped. Why can't it be both way without needing to donate all the money.

Honestly though, I don't see why it would help the prefecture at all. Especially when he goes on tours mostly outside Aomori.
Then again, it was just one guy they interviewed. We can't be sure his opinion represents the majority.
There will be some people who will be interested in both metal drumming and visiting a rural city. I commend the Nyango Star.

What deep meaning? Apple + meowing + The Beatles reference?
Печерога Євгенія well i get the apple part, Apple is the record company that produces the Beatles records. Meowing? Could be the fact that john lennon had cats. So that could also being another reasoning for the name.

Vice journalism.
Yes. And the answer of a single person is not representative at all.
I doubt very much if 20 year old metal fans are the target demographic of their tourism push. But, as they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity.
The point for me was that this young man was surprised by what he saw, and bought some merch even though he wouldn’t have expected he would do that before seeing the show. He spent money after seeing Nyango Star just once. In ten years maybe he’ll take his young family to Kuroishi and say “this is where Nyango Star is from!” - marketing can be a long game as well as a short one.
i think it’s important to keep honest true responses in even if it’s not what the producers or audience want!
The video ends on such a depressing note. I feel sorry for the people of Kuroishi.

@@eXiLe824 It's pretty obvious to me. People pretend as if the editor, probably herself, didn't put the statement and her question in juxtaposition on purpose.
It's disheartening, that instead of appreciating that she is intentionally asking a slightly provocative and maybe uncomfortable question (which we can only recognize, because she literally tells the viewer directly beforehand) to get some interesting answers, people criticize her.
@@eXiLe824 That is basically being rude on purpose in order to show that people don't like it when someone is being rude to them. If she was doing it on purpose, it would make it even more disrespectful in my opinion.
From my experience, cultural boundaries work way differently in Japan than they do in the western world. Over here it might be okay for someone from the media to ask uncomfortable questions in order to showcase it to their viewers. However, in Japan overstepping them even slightly is an absolute no-go (again, from my experience).
Just because you get away with stuff like this because you are a foreigner, does not mean you are entitled to do it.
Her point was to show what happens when you ask this question. It was informative for an American audience.
I’M SO HAPPY that they finally introduce him on this channel 😆🤟 I’m so proud of him!!!
Love from Japan 🇯🇵
Hey its the heavy metal apple cat
When he came out tatted up
That's when he earned my undying devotion, adoration, praise, and fealty
It's just "No, I don't" and it just ends there XD
Lol i was thinking the exact same thing
At 1:07, her facial expression is clearly "Smile and nod, just smile and nod..."
was thinking the same thing
04:45 "It's taboo to acknowledge Yuru-chara as people in costumes".
05:05 " Do you think part of the appeal is the kind of human element, of imagining the person drumming that hard inside a very hot, sweaty costume ?"
I love how they used the judis Priest font and Metallica its hilarious when you think the apple cat is just playing in the background.
i actually want one of those shirts dude! :D

@@jessieharatsu884 It's a pretty confusing site, couldn't find the button to actually order the T--shirt

@@tomo_mix YEAHHH HE GOT IT
You'd probably sound the same if you tried speaking Japanese
Personally I love the dedication to character.
I can’t wait until Kuroishi City builds a Nyango Star statue. The city’s economy will be saved, Kuroishi will be the regional (or global) economic hub, and at the center of the hub will be a statue memorializing an apple possessed by the spirit of a dead cat
But they are aging
There's probably one already. It's actually one of the first things they do when a mascot makes it big - they make a fiberglass life-size statue and put it at the town's train station or bus depot to maximize its PR asset.
