I cross-shopped an S5 Sportback and the 440i Gran Coupe. In the end, I went with the Audi primarily because it was a newer model (the current gen 3/4 series is being replaced later this year or early next year) and I just couldn't wait. But even in Canada, what the reviewer says is true; a similarly specced 440i is thousands and thousands (in my case, about $6000) more expensive than a similarly equipped S5. In Canada the S5 isn't complicated to spec either, it just has a few trim levels and a few add-on options, so a lot of stuff comes standard. The way BMW nickel & dimes you for options (you have to add both M-Performance packs to get the same amount of power as the Audi as well as an active exhaust) brought the price way, way too high for what was ultimately an older, lesser-equipped, previous-gen car. I will admit that the exhaust on the 440i Gran Coupe (with the M-Performance packs) sounds waaaay better than the one in my S5, but the interior on the S5 really beat it. I only wish the S5 had the option for a leather dash like the BMW does; even if you have to pay extra for it having that extra bit of class in the cabin would really help. That's the only part of the car I feel is a bit too cheap/VW-ish. Otherwise, incredbly happy with my purchase. Perfect mix of sportiness, luxury, practicality.
Also the A5 was really quite impressive for what it was; just as fast and responsive as my old naturally-aspirated V6 Acura, like the reviewer said the drivetrain really seems to punch above its weight class, and it can compete with some of the V6's out there (not all, but some of the sub-300 torque ones) with respect to power and power delivery. Otherwise there is very little difference between the A5/S5; cosmetically they look very similar. The seats are different and I love my sport seats but the A5 seats were very comfy and more adjustable for sure.
Exactly my thoughts and experiences like you read my mind, though I was choosing between 4 cylinder A5 and 330i. I would have only considered an used BMW 4 over new A5 just to save significant amount of money and the fact that 4 series' depreciation after hitting 3 years almost halves in the US. Still test drive 2018 430i - although BMW was more dynamic in terms of driving experience including the exhaust sound, the dealer experience was bad, incentive on a slightly driven (800 miles) was terrible, and A5's interior is just overall superior. Too much configs that bump up to at least mid 50k whereas A5's quattro is standard and had much simpler builds. And yeah, all new 4 series will likely come out in 2 years so would not pay full price on it and get hit by even deeper depreciation hit if for some reason I had to sell it in few years. I am happy with the A5 but wish it had more softer touch materials in the cabin. I feel like even my old 11 VW CC had more soft touch materials in some areas especially the door trims. Also I hate the very plasticky sound and feel on buttons. Kia Stinger I test drove had more premium feelings when it comes to clicking paddle shifts and dash buttons, no kidding. Overall it's a beautiful car, with good fuel efficiency for a turbo and AWD, still fun to drive, loving the rear dynamic LED turn signals except its red in the US 🤮 and lots of features now I am on dollar menus to pay off the loan 😂
I have this car. Had it for about a year now and I love it. But it’s not perfect. This review is spot on, but the one thing I dislike is the understeer. I drive very ‘calmly’, but you really have to adjust to this aspect of the car. It’s such a lovely car. So comfortable, but you feel it prefers to be driven like a luxury saloon car, not a sports car. It certainly bites off the line which is handy sometimes. It also has very poor vision out the back and sides, making parking more stressful than you would like.
I like the a5 sport back, but I like the coupe more. I can live without the extra practicality for the extra bit of better looks. Plus I'm a sucker for frameless windows.
@@amaryadav8703 I was unaware at the time. The mistake has since been brought to my attention. I do still like the coupe better, no rational reason why.
Nahshon Immanuel I’m sure you’ve decided by now, but Audi hands down. I’ve been in a very fortunate position to have been able to access long term rental cars through work. Spent 3 months with a 2017c300 and 3 months with a 2019 Audi A5 sport back. Mercedes steering was much quicker and more direct, but the Audi’s engine and transmission combo more than makes up for it. The Audi also has more practicality, better styling, and in my opinion a more upscale interior. Just wish it had the merc’s steering.
I have GOT to imagine that is a beautiful car, driven on probably a reasonably looking landscape.....so can you please talk to whoever colored this video and tell them they shouldn't have gone with a "muted" color tone just to make it "look fancy"! One or two shots is fine, but I'd you're showing me a car, especially a nice one, I'd like to see what it actually looks like.....not the DCEU colored version.....come on!
Gotta say: what happened to Brian Cooley? He is your only charismatic and insightful reviewer. Why have you relegated him to the niche videos, and why are you bringing out your B-Team to do actual car reviews?
leeeinfield mind pointing to a review that says that about the dashboard? I have not seen anything about that. There are some reviewers who consider Hyundai/ Kia to have some of the best fit and finish in the industry. As for affording other high end cars, that is always an option yes
Robert Iloski yes, but a facelift could be 2-3 years off yet. And the interior is beautiful, and nothing wrong with it UNTIL you see the new design themes of the 6/7/8.
I personally don't like the new dash, particularly because how everything is touch screen controlled now. The HVAC system in the A5/A4 hits the sweet spot for me by being minimalistic, simple, neat and NO touchscreen. I don't have to take my eyes off the road when I need to adjust the temperture
Prashanth S yes valid point and I wondered if someone would bring that up. I’m sure that their are pros and cons with both designs, but just from aesthetics, even if you like the hard buttons, it still looks old gen.
Same here man. I absolutely love the looks of the new interior of the A6/A7/A8. But I drove in my uncle's new A7 Sportback and found the touchscreens to be very very annoying and totally not intuitive. As much as I love the look, functionality to me is so much more key than the form. I was kinda glad that I went for the S5 Sportback with the tradional keys for AC and heating. Also the swivel wheel is just hands down the best and most intuitive way to navigate between the MMI system. Touchscreens require more cognitive action and brain functioning which can become very dangerous if you are driving
I feel like the previous a5 was much better looking. Also that line where the hood meets the fender makes the car look pretty bad every time I see one of these it’s all I can pay attention too
I agree with Antuan on taking this over a 4 Series. Audi won’t charge you for the steering wheel
You go! You're taking over the world with videos! You own The Road Show!
I like this car, and also like Antuan’s reviews!
I really like Antuan's reviews, and I really like the upcoming 2019 RS5 5-door Sportback.
The RS5 has a 2.9L twin turbo V6, gone is the V8.
True, it was recently updated to the V6. Antuan was just a tad but nostalgic.
Mohammed Somai I couldn't help but think "noooooooooooo, don't say that" when he said that.

Would you recommend this for a first family car?
Amazing reviewing thanks 👍👍👍

zbigniewzapora I did not know that.
The sportback also has frameless windows, 2019 at least

I do still like the coupe better, no rational reason why.
Glad. You cleared up the all road 😂😂
Great car
What is the name of colour of this car ?
I'm diggin the S5 version.
Would so love to see the RS4 Avant here on our shores.
I am having a hard time deciding between this cars 2019 version or a 2019 MB C300, any suggestions?

Great review!
I like it!
There is a wagon variant... It's the A4 allroad. (But others want the European variant of the A4/A5).

You can call it Audi answer to bmw 4 series GC what the a5 is the first in the segment so the other cars are the answers for the Audi a5
Gotta say: what happened to Brian Cooley? He is your only charismatic and insightful reviewer. Why have you relegated him to the niche videos, and why are you bringing out your B-Team to do actual car reviews?
Bring Brian Cooley back for car reviews
I think he did fine. Cooley is too much emphasis on snark. Entertaining, but sometimes you just want the facts.
"You can call it the answer to the BMW 4-series Gran Coupe". This guy ...
I miss C-Net style.
I love this model but the rear is a bit claustrophobic.
Audi didn’t make an a5 v8 . The rs 5 is a twin turbo v6
It's funny how in the comparison to the bmw you completely forgot to compare to the stinger. More car for the same money with less frills
Ed still a Kia with subpar quality materials.
leeeinfield spoken like someone who hasn't been in a modern Hyundai or kia
Ed I’ve seen the reviews. The dashboard wobbles so bad. And why would I want to own a Kia when I can afford something higher quality?
leeeinfield mind pointing to a review that says that about the dashboard? I have not seen anything about that. There are some reviewers who consider Hyundai/ Kia to have some of the best fit and finish in the industry. As for affording other high end cars, that is always an option yes
WHERE THE HELL IS COOLEY MAN
RS5 doesn't have the V8 anymore. It's a 2.9L V6
Antuan should be in shackles. Leave the reviews to the great Brian Cooley!
The RS5 has a V6 not a V8. Cool review otherwise.
👍🏾
Lungelo Radebe he said the RS5 with the V8.......lol the S5 has the V6.
Sorry about that. That engine was recently replaced.
maybe throw a bike in there my dad fitted a bike in our rental A1😂😂
Beautiful car. The only negative is, with the new dash and interiors of the A6/7/8, it makes this interior look dated already.
golfbuddy1969 agree!! Hopefully they update the A5 interior with the upcoming facelift 🤔

I dont liek the back its too BIG , it kills the overall a5 style.
I feel like the previous a5 was much better looking. Also that line where the hood meets the fender makes the car look pretty bad every time I see one of these it’s all I can pay attention too
This looks exactly like the new VW
Hmmmm
Buick regal sportback has more space than the a5 sportback
Mu dreem car
How to make a review of an amazing car boring ....
Don’t put Cooley or Hall on it.
Sorry guys
5 door Audi A5 used to look so cool, now it looks so Ford Mondeo...
allroad
Funny the lincon continental is more expensive than this
cello702 it's also bigger and more powerful.
+Necrosis3 yep
Where is Cooley? Your other automotive reviewers are dull & void of personality.
+Costel Coaie But he's right.
I would like to see the car, not him...
Sexy car!,
Tesla Model 3 smokes this fossil waste of money.
I hate to say it but this guys lisp kills me I could not watch the whole video.
I hate these....
Way uglier than the A7. Hate the proportions.
Blake Swan but can you afford either of them?
Guess what?...
Trump 2020!
