  • Not all hatchbacks sacrifice graceful looks for practicality and utility. The Audi A5 Sportback gives up nothing in the looks department while it swallows 65-inch televisions whole. Tom Voelk checks an S-line Prestige model.

    Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

    I have owned this car for 10 months now. Very happy, great all around vehicle. Love the styling, other than A7, there is no other car out there that looks more sleek imo. The hatch is awesome, I can go snowboarding without a problem - no need to install Thule. Good gas mileage. Even has a bit of a fun factor, I often take it on the backroads. It’s no Porsche, but it makes me smile when I push it past 3.5k rpm getting out of a corner in third gear :).

    "The A5 Sportback isn't a SUV". Yeah!

    • @leekohler5118
      @leekohler5118 5 років тому +1

      Glad I'm not the only one who hates ugly SUVs. Many them don't even have much room! I have an A3, and got a sidewall bulge in one of my front tires once. When I took it to the dealer, they had to order the tire as it was not in stock at the dealer. They didn't want me driving on that tire, so they kept my car until it came in and gave me a Q5 as a loaner. I was shocked at how little room the Q5 had. It was basically the same size as my A3, just taller and definitely not as fun to drive. I am a hockey goalie, and my gear took up all the space in the rear of the Q5, just like it does in the trunk of my A3. That's ridiculous. SUVs are supposed to have more room, right? Not in the case of the Q5. Looking at the A5, my gear would not come close to taking up all the trunk space, even with the back seats up. I'd have room to spare!
      After I'm done with my A3 (many, many, many years from now, I love it), I would definitely consider this car as a replacement.

    Gorgeous vehicle. No question. From a purely functional standpoint it's difficult to justify the price premium versus the Stinger (especially considering the real world discounts usually available on the KIA). But that premium is less than I expected. And to use a term usually reserved for movies, the "production value" advantages of the A5 are obvious. For those who care how it looks in the country club parking lot the price premium may well be worth it. If I were in the market I think I'd opt for the A4 Allroad for about the same price but that's because I love "estates."
    The usual complaints from internet fanboys about a performance deficit from the 2.0L Turbo are expected but a 0-60 time of under 6 seconds is perfectly adequate, especially in a grand touring vehicle. And Audi/VW turbos are a joy to drive. I love VW/Audi DCT's so no complaint there. But I recently rented a Q5 with the same shifter and I have to say it was a PITA. No doubt one gets used to it but after five days of driving I still had to think about how to put the damn thing in Park. (I'm a slow learner.) As a southpaw I hate the idea of writing commands on the center knob. And I do wonder how right handed folks in, say, the UK and Australia feel about it.
    BTW, speaking of "production values," kudos, Tom. Audi couldn't ask for a more beautiful presentation of their gorgeous vehicle.

    One thing I noticed comparing the A5 Sportback to the A4: The B&O stereo sounds much better in the A4 despite them supposedly having the exact same 19 speaker unit...I think it has something to do with the cabin acoustics and where the rear shelf speakers are placed (there are no rear shelf speakers in a Sportback). I’ve tried in multiple 2018 A5 Sportbacks with the B&O and they’re all like that, the A3 and A4’s B&O stereo is noticeably better.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  5 років тому +2

    • @mp7137
      @mp7137 5 років тому

      I put a single 10" JL subwoofer in my a5 and the B&O stereo sounds 100x better. The factory subwoofer is a complete joke. I still find the midrange to be weak but by all means if you want to drastically improve the sound then replace that so called factory subwoofer with a real one.

    I'm not caving into the SUV craze. I prefer low to the ground smaller sports sedans. I have an 08 Acura TL type S. By the time I'm done with it ill have some money saved up and I'm pretty set on "Sportback" cars - Kia Stinger, Audi A/S 5, BMW 440i Gran Coupe. Which one do you think is the best? I'd have a hard time leaving the V6. I drove a BMW 4 series while on vacation and the 4 cylinder had horrendous turbo lag.

      Corvettefan117 I live in the north east so I’m sticking with the stock 19s with all season tires for now. But you can look in to APR stage 1. Here is a good forum to read through

    Just because they recommend high octane gasoline does not mean you have to use it. Regular gasoline will work just fine. At worst you will get a little less HP and a few funny noises once in a while.

      @@DrivenCarReviews I understand that, and I am not criticizing your usual flawless review. I am just pointing out that fact because some people think they will somehow damage their engines if they do not use the specified octane rating. I am more interested in saving money than horsepower, so I would always use regular gasoline. It's a personal choice.

      Using anything less than 91 is asking for trouble. If you can afford a $50k car then you can afford to spend 5 extra bucks at the gas pump for premium.
