First, thanks Dave!! I’ve just received mine today, and have been obsessively checking for a decent review because like you, I had exactly the same concerns that they didn’t cut from the tape, and all that unnecessary processing. We never had a version of this cut from tape, so it’s disappointing Warner (who by the way are known for being quite easy with loaning tapes according to Kevin Gray if I recall correctly) didn’t allow that to happen.. Thanks for such an in depth analysis and comparison, I particularly appreciate you compared it with that yellow pressing. As an aspiring sound engineer I really relate to your insights, and feel they are more focused on the sound, and answering questions I actually have myself, and less on hype or supporting one company over others; in a nutshell, unbiased, honest. As for Mereora and M2M, order them Dave ❤ they won’t disappoint! I’m a millennial born in ‘89, so this was already a very personal band to me, having seen their M2M tour in Brisbane AU, and Soundwave Festival where they headlined right before Metallica. Maybe it’s to do with timing and my age, but 2007 was my first year out of high school (17/18yrs old) and Rick Rubin’s new direction for the band I think was a critical step in their development. Certainly always been my favourite sonically. The track ‘Leave Out All The Rest’ became far more poignant after Chester Bennington’s death. I haven’t played my one steps yet, but thank you again for this perfectly timed warm up review, it’s got me hyped up! (In case that’s not obvious.. 😅)
Dave always love your review videos. You put a lot of thought into each one and no one can predict what you're into. One video you're talking about the Prestige Miles recording sessions and next you're talking about a Linkin one-step. Always great and thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion.
Thanks for commenting Austin. I suspect Linkin Park is more up your street than some of the stuff I feature... If you're interested: I did just order the other two One-Steps (in fact I ordered all three, so will have a spare of Hybrid Theory - if you order all three you get 20% discount). No brainer! 🙂
@@DaveDenyer Thanks Dave. The formative music of my adolescense took place roughly '91-98. So when Linkin Park came out, there were aspects of their sound I liked, but I was really just missing the epic 90s bands that recently dissolved, like Soundgarden. I'm into this video, aside from the fact that you did it, because I'm interested in what BSM seems to be up to. It gives me hope that they might start reissuing some classic 90s records on one-step. If I could have BSM do a couple titles, they might be NEVERMIND, SUPERUNKNOWN, AENIMA (Tool), MEZZANINE (Massive Attack), and KID A MNESIAC. Legitimate audiophile treatments have neglected these pivotal records. On a completely different sequence of notes, I'm awaiting my copy of MILES (Craft OJC); the first of Miles' first great quintet sessions on his way out the Prestige contract. Looking forward to that and, if you want to do a comparison/review of that, I'm here for it! Cheers.
@@austinhunt4260 funnily enough, Hybrid Theory has massively fueled my already considerable love of Chris Cornell. Spot on Dave! I bought all 3 couple of weeks ago, enjoyed all of them, even though I wasn’t a big fan, my wife likes them, she did enjoy this release very much, especially on a good system. I highly recommend all 3 albums. Greatest videos as always, thanks for sharing!
Dave, thank you so much for all you do! I love Linkin Park and was hesitant on pulling the trigger on these, but you inspired me and I just pulled the trigger and happy I did so! Thank you! :)
I get why you don't like doing negative reviews, but I think that warning everyone about poorly done releases is worth doing. So I think you should definitely consider reviewing some of the disappointments you buy.
A friend with a relatively inexpensive analog setup raved about his copy of Meteora. And I immediately ordered Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Waiting now patiently for them to arrive. I was quite surprised seeing you review it, and now I’m quite confident that it is not just a marketing move by Warner. Thank you for your thorough review. Have a great weekend
If it's dynamic masters of Hybrid Theory you want, dynamic audiophile quality remasters is what I have. Two more new ones are being released on September 5th! Thanks for the heads up about BCM...it's a cool thing they're doing.

I wouldn’t think of it as negative. It is actually a postive service of an unfortunate conclusion. No can be just as helpful as yes to the consumer.
Great review Dave. This is exactly the same experience I had as well. Very accurate review. I am curious where you got your info on the source, because it’s my understanding that none of the recent LP pressings use the original “tapes”, but this is the only one that had the actual “tapes” used. This is also something that makes this release truly special and for years to come. Also, BSM, is a series by Warner so they have access to all the original tapes and I believe only original tapes will be used in this series.
Hi, glad you liked the review. I got the info about the source from BSM website: www.becausesoundmatters.net/products/hybrid-theory-one-step-lp It states: "Audio Source: 192/24 files From Original Master Tapes". Also I did see a video in which Levi Seitz is interviewed about this issue, and although I don't recall him saying as much, but it certainly looks like his mastering / cutting studio is not set up for tape, only digital (which is not uncommon these days).
I bought all 3 of them including a 20% price reduction. They sound pretty good with an impressive bass amount. Apparently the next release will be Green Day’s American Idiot, which I like very much and look forward to.
Nice comparison options, across all spectrums! I ordered all 3 One-Steps direct from BSM three weeks ago to get them for 79.99 each and I am waiting for them to arrive. I'm looking forward to it after your review! Cheers
Another lovely and thorough review, thank you Dave! Oh yes... I have both the recent Hybrid Theory (a year or so ago, probably this 2024 is a repress I'm guessing) and also just got Meteora. And WOW! On my system, both sound amazingly powerful and dynamic, I have absolutely NO complaints, especially considering when these were originally recorded/released. A Bloody AMAZING job! That is impressive too about the 1-Step, considering that these are cut from 192/24 Hi-Res files, so these 1-steps are not truly all analog, and yet they apparently sound quite good (I wish Abbey Road would get their $**t together and put out better sounding albums using the same kinds of files) But yes, even these 'regular' releases sound bloody fantastic! And, FWIW, the compositions on Meteora are GREAT! You will love it. Also too, if this falls into your spectrum of listening (and, I might be surprised if it does) the recent ROG (Run Out Groove) pressings of the Type O Negative albums on green/black vinyl are absolutely F'n STUNNING! Wow, ultra dynamic. I have Slow, Deep, and Hard, as well as Bloody Kisses, and Like is Killing Me, and Run Out Groove did an outstanding job with the mastering. Again, truly phenomenal considering when these originally came out. I sure wish the hell we could get a decent pressing of the Stone Temple Pilots '4' album. I just checked out the CD the other day, and man is that horribly compressed. If that is the original recording, I don't know if they can do much about it. Thankfully, both of the AP 75th 2-45 pressings of Core and Purple are totally lovely! And, even the 'regular' release in 2021 of the Deluxe Tiny Music... sounds very good on vinyl (just not worth the silly $80 for the vinyl and 3 CDs) I REALLY hope they release the vinyl separately sometime soon. But, going by the sound of the CD of '4', it seems pretty hopeless. There is a new Rocktober release of it. IF you happen to get it, if you would kindly comment about how it sounds that would be lovely, thank you!
So pleased you enjoyed the video and thanks for your comments. To be honest I’ve not even heard of Type O Negative until now... so I just had a look… You guessed correctly: a bit too heavy for me, but I do appreciate the suggestion!
I'd love to have a crack at REMIXING the Stone Temple Pilot's "No. 4" album...assuming the original mixes themselves were hyper compressed. The years 1997 - 2012 seems to be the era of rock music that was brickwall limited to death so...if the record labels were nice, they'd get the best of the best redone properly.
Nice Kitty, looks like a Sweetheart... 😊 Hey Dave, I hope you don't mind my coming back and dropping a comment (I PROMISE it won't be one of my tediously long-winded ones) I just took out my copy of Hybrid Theory, a 2013 German pressing, which sounds every bit as good as the more recent Meteora. Now, just a thought... I know our 'tastes' are quite different, but I just wanted to mention that to me, maybe being a guitar player and composer (using both terms VERY loosely) HT is very good, has a lot of power and punch, BUT... to me the actual compositions and arrangements on Meteora are a lot more engaging. HT is good, but to me a tad more 'Samey' On Meteora I find the way they arrange the songs are FAR more compelling. So much so, that after seeing your review of HT, I did order the 1-Step of Meteora because I like it so much (something I normally rarely do being somewhat poor) But, for me, I don't find HT nearly as compelling. So, it will be interesting to see what you think when you get Meteora as to whether you like one more than the other, if you wouldn't mind kindly leaving a comment about that. (I guess this was still rather long, sorry mate! 😕)
Haha, thanks for the comments, as always! Meteora is finally on its way! I'm looking forward to hearing it, and Minutes to Midnight... I'll maybe even do a video on them.
@@DaveDenyer Please do... I would feel a HELL of a lot better if I hear you say the 1-Step of Meteora is better than the very good sounding current pressing! @@latheofheaven the trouble is, I would have to go buy a current vinyl issue of Meteora as I have only heard it via streaming. Still, just for you, maybe I will ;-)
@@DaveDenyer Oh, no, no... that's not necessary Sir, you buy enough albums, multiples of them already, so please don't on my account. However, if you feel the level of sonic quality is equivalent to the 1-Step of Hybrid Theory in the sense that it was quite a bit better than the standard pressing of it. And, you feel the 1-step of Meteora is every bit as good, then that would certainly be sufficient to indicate the difference would be just as dramatic with Meteora as it was with the other. I saw the interview with the fellow who does the mastering as Black Belt Mastering for these albums and he honestly seems like a very genuine and passionate fellow who truly loves his work. He even replied on the Steve Hoffman stream when I commented that and he said that yes he really does love what he does. The mastering choices for the CD are garbage. Hybrid theory is a cd totally victimized by the loudness wars. Far too much compression. I have no doubt the vinyl would sound much better.
