This Cure review: about £100, but the viewing figures have been very good, so I’ve almost broken even on this video. That doesn’t normally happen, but ‘paying for itself’ is a goal.
Many thanks for not letting unheard options pass. Latest check. Even more listening and comparison work to be done. Umpteen pressing plant versions: Mexican, MPO, Optimal, Pallas and wherever. Umpteen colour variants popping up too. Unfortunately many of those combination options are mostly from Showell‘s mistreat. If at all, my fav would be a Grundman mastered and cut, Optimal pressed black vinyl version, and that’s, of course, not available. Yet! :-)
I think I can live without another Showell cut, no matter what colour vinyl it is... I'm currently chewing over which version(s) of the live performance to order / preorder...
wonderful review. The most compelling of this release. At some point during the video, it came through my mind what equipment you used during testing, and then came the images... wow... your findings are absolute! fantastic equipment! the envy of any audiophile. You 've done here a public service to us all. I am happy to say that I bought Grundman's mix on the day of its release, I haven't received it yet here in Toronto thanks to the Canada Post strike... anyways thanks to your review I will get the deluxe version as my digital back up... but will purchase it after I get the vinyl... I want to savour that experience first... cheers,
Hey - After repeating listening and careful consideration, I think this is The Cure's best album ever, and it's a multi-layered project that is really complete with the live at the Troxy (phenomenal concert, recently issued on CD) and with the instrumentals. It strikes me that you only mention the instrumentals in passing, when they represent a major part of the whole project. Just listening to Warsong, Drone:NoDrone and Endsong instrumental versions shows how deep these tracks run (and credit to Smith for releasing those tracks without his singing, which goes to show that he values the project as a project of the entire band, not just his own). Some of those instrumentals remind me of the instrumentals of Joy DIvision / New Order (Ceremony / In a lonely place, etc) Well worth the price of the Deluxe edition (the dual cassette as well). I think we haven't seen the whole project yet and I am reasonably confident that Smith will release more material, like stripped down studio versions, or maybe acoustic outtakes of these tracks, and maybe more. Note - Someone on Discogs has measured the DR on the cassette version, and it has a much better DR of 10 (less compression) than the CD and vinyl edition (DR 6 to 8), so that mix is clearly the best of the bunch. Having said all this, I hope someone will re-mix and remaster the whole thing (studio version, instrumentals and live) on a good vinyl edition, ideally 45rpm, as a box set in the (near) future. I'd buy that for sure. Anyway, thanks for that review and for all the work that went into it. Happy end of the year.
I do agree with you: this is certainly my favourite Cure album. Regarding the instrumentals: I’ve not listened properly yet: with 3 vinyl versions, plus the cassette and digital versions (& watching the live video) to evaluate I simply haven’t had time to include the instrumental versions. Really interesting what you say about the DR of the cassette. I’d bet the Grundman cut measures best of all. Thanks Eric!
Thanks so much for all your work on this, much appreciated! What a mess of a release and I'm especially upset because I pre-ordered triple CD, white vinyl and double cassette. I can't play the cassette or downmix the Atmos to stereo (the best version) and the store didn't even list the different masters when I ordered 😥 I guess it's great they released the live version but at this point I'm just so sad about the whole thing I'm not prepared to buy a fourth version, so upset...
Sorry to hear that. It certainly isn't what I'd normally go for, in terms of mix, but I can't deny it's got under my skin and remains favourite album. Of which I've got 8 versions, one of which I can't play either (yet)...
Great review and your efforts are much appreciated! I was hoping you got the live Troxy show. I am veey curious as to how the mastering on it came out. I watch the show more than listen to the lp as I think the songs breath more. Thanks again for your time and efforts!
Many thanks for covering all current media options, and I feel that - despite the overkill of vinyl options - there is even more to come. A double studio and live concert one. Maybe a 45 rpm single sided lp box and a shellac version? :-) The album is stellar but the vinyl strategy is confusing to say the least. Very happy with my 24/96 album download played thru a Linn Klimax hub/streamer and Linn Akubarik active speakers.
Hi Dave. Excellent comparison video. I really appreciate your description of the nuances and differences of each release. I have the Miles 2LP, the Bernie cut and the 3CD but haven’t had the time to do a proper comparison yet myself. Thanks for the heads up on the cassette. Thanks for your review. 👍🏻
Thank you Dave for the in depth reviews. I own the hires version and now purchased the Cassette version, to play on my Nakamichi CR-3A, too bad it does not come on Metal tape with Dolby C. :)
It seems like your thoughts line up with what's on the Dynamic Range Database, pretty much. The downloads and CD version have a headache-inducing 5 average (anything 7 and below tends to literally cause me a headache) whilst they have one vinyl version listed at a nice figure of 11 and the cassette at 13! So what you heard was true.. soundstage, depth, clarity.. comes down to measured dynamics. I just have to wonder why they insist on squashing their mix for other versions, to such a degree. To me, it changes the mix to push everything against that wall of sound.
Cassette you say? Who would've guessed. I'm sure I still have a Sony Pro Walkman in a drawer somewhere. I was going to use it on a long train jouney and have a few tapes just to see how folk would react!
Nice review of this album I found the music very compressed sounding and hard to distinguish between the different instruments I asked different people because I thought it was just me who felt this way but different people agreed with me Very compressed sounding Great music but just sounded funny to me
Hi Dave, as i say in my first video on this: the mix is very, very dense. I think the Grundman and the cassette (Colton) make the best of it. I do think the dark, dense sound is by design, and it is best played loud. “Audiophile” recording it ain’t!
Yeah, I was about to ask if Bernie's is better. The Qobuz version is VERY compressed. Dense can be done without the horrendous compression. BTW, I listened through an Avid MTRX Studio and Genelec studio monitors with a sub.
Hi Dave, the Atmos is less dynamically compressed. By design Atmos isn’t dynamically compressed (because of the instrument placement to create space). When they mix the Atmos they actually create a stereo binaural mix at the same time. I use an Atmos decoder and native mix down to stereo (which is easy to do). What happens is you get a better sounding stereo image and not nearly as dynamically compressed cut. I will try to rip the atmos to files and send to you. You may believe this is the best way to hear it. The recent Pearl Jam release (Dark Matter) had the same problem. Vinyl terrible mastering, CD and streaming sucked. I got the Blu-ray non streaming (lossless) atmos mix and captured the analog to DSD. Now I have a pretty good sounding record. I find the atmos mix (stereo fold) is the closest thing we have to something that resembles vinyl soundstaging and less dynamically compressed. Atmos is the future (unfortunately). Right now all atmos streams are (lossy) but not dynamically compressed. Eventually the atmos will be streamed lossless (like the Blu-ray). These record labels are using crap processes. This is the sign of the times. Hifi is dead for any new releases in general. We have to jump thru hoops to get something good. What is interesting is all these physical mediums use the same crap stuff. Also the live version is not nearly as thick as mud. It may be the definitive version if you ask me. The live at Troxy sounds way better than the actual album release. I think some kid went wild in a basement with protools plugins. On the live this is harder to do. You can preorder the live version at cure website…get the 2 lp version the other one is a single disk “bio” vinyl. Who knows how they will sound but the digital streaming version of this was released 12/13. To me it sounds amazing and also is live which makes me appreciate Robert and his artistry even more.
I will have to take the Blu-Ray round a friend's who has Atmos capabilities... I think he should be able to make me a 2 channel fold down. You''re not the first to recommend the live version to me (I have watched, and love it), and I've had emails from the Cure store. However you've tipped me over the edge, heading to the Cure store now to place my order!
@@DaveDenyerhi Dave, merry Christmas. I ripped my Blu-ray uncompressed atmos mix down to stereo. It is significantly less dynamically compressed. the streaming version is DR7 avg the Blu-ray version is DR11 avg. much more space and definition in the instruments. To my ears this is probably the best way to hear it. Hope the live vinyl will sound good (fingers crossed). If you want me to send you a file of this rip let me know with your email address.
Could you possibly send me the mix please? I bought the triple cd, white vinyl (turns out to be Showell) and cassette (which I can't play). I'm so upset about it all I haven't been able to face listening to it yet even once 😥
I think alas Robert's ears have gone a bit or he's just a terrible mixer as he was involved in the mix. Most of the remastered albums he's done are worse than the original CDs
I’ve tried to two LP versions and the Tidal 96/24, for me the Tidal stream sound the best. This may be down to the Organik DAC in the Linn selekt DSM, deck was a selekt level LP12, which uses the DAC from from the streamer, so gods knows why TBH. Bottom line is it’s a really good album 😂
Wow, what a surprise! Not really being a big fan of Showell's 1/2 speed stuff, I still was expecting the 2-LP to top all. But, most interestingly, I guess ol' Bernie wins this one. Very good to know, thank you Sir! FWIW, on my system with the tall multi-driver open baffle dipole line arrays with 13 drivers a side + 2-15" biamped dipole woofers, most of the Abbey Road 1/2 speed pressings usually sound very flat and non-dimensional, kind of unnatural with a lot of the life sucked out of them. There are exceptions though. But, this is great to know that the standard and likely more affordable Grundman pressing sounds by far the best. And YES, I absolutely hate that when they do that with the bass, artificially pumping up the lower-mid bass to give the illusion of going 'Low', but when a pressing actually does naturally go lower, it is delightful to hear.
I’m not sure whether this bass fattening is sn unavoidable effect of the Abbey Road Half Speed mastering / cutting, or an artistic decision made by Miles Showell. The sucking out of life and dynamics is another extremely unfortunate trait. I’ve not found one person who prefers a Showell remaster over an original, when played on a decent system.
@@DaveDenyer Yep... The bass thing is a hard call... Don't know if his method has bass limitations and it is done deliberately like many others do (which is what I'm guessing...) But yes, on the other quite so. BTW, one huge exception and probably simply because the mono master is quite a bit better (and I'm not particularly a big mono fan, especially for Psychedelia - absolutely *NO* mono Hendrix thank you...) but the Abbey Road mono 1/2 speed pressing of Disraeli Gears absolutely blows away my standard stereo pressing. After over 40 years of collecting vinyl that was my very first WOW moment for mono. Absolutely stellar and most HIGHLY recommended!
Thanks for a greatly detailed review on all the different versions available. You've bought all the different versions so we don't have to 😄. I'm in agreement with you that all Miles Showell pressings sound fat to me, which is quite frustrating, especially on the Beatles releases. Your comment at the end about wishing for a 15ips reel to reel version doesn't make sense to me, as its source is from digital, so why not make your own from digital?
Haha, good point. Kinda said it on the spur of the moment, but I’d bet a proper mastering engineer could make a better tape from, say, the final mix, than I could do myself.
Comparison to the different vinyl releases apart, surely this is more a comparison of your kit capabilities rather than the actual mix or master? You say yourself that you do not play digital at home by choice, so presumably you’ve spent far more money on you vinyl playback than anything else. If that’s correct then it’s obviously not a level playing field. Whilst your comparisons on the vinyl is interesting, everything else is surely invalid.
That’s a very valid point. I have spent more on my analogue sources but I’ve also got (in my opinion at least) a very good digital source. I’ve had all manner of high end DACs etc at home and use what is my favourite set-up. I do play digital media when it sounds better than the analogue LP version, or if there is no analogue version at all. Thanks for the feedback Simon, cheers!
