    I like how she has visible tattoos but still appreciates/respects hidden tattoos. When I went to get a tattoo on the back of my ear, the tattoo artist laughed at me and told me to put it somewhere more visible. As a future lawyer, I don't want to take chances by getting a visible tattoo. Unfortunately, there are still employers who don't hire people with tattoos, so I don't want to loose the chance at a job because of a visible tattoo. The fact that my artist told me I'm weird and laughed in my face at my tattoo idea made me extremely upset. I like her because she appreciates everyone's tattoos and everyone's opinion whether to get a tattoo or to not get a tattoo.

    My wrist tattoos that I got about a year ago were definitely not my first visible ones, but for some reason they were the first to make me feel "tattooed". And by then I already had many many hours of tattoos on me: full back, large leg tattoos, feet, hands, chest... It's weird how placement can matter so much!

    No one can tell I'm tattooed when I'm dressed in "normal" clothes, but when I'm in a swimsuit or something I definitely feel like I'm more of a tattooed person than not. I have seven pieces and have gotten large sternum and rib pieces in the past year. I like the idea that I can get tattoos in "invisible" places when I'm starting off (I'm 22), so that I can essentially choose when and where I show my tattoos. I love your videos and you're always bringing the best advice and content!

      I'm the exact same! in a shirt and jeans you can't see any, but in a bikini you can see all of mine, they're all big pieces on my torso and Upper thighs, people are always reallt surprised! most people seem to start on their arms these days!

      I gotta say it's pretty funny to see looks and reactions. When I'm at work I usually wear long sleeves or a cardigan, but as soon as I go home I take it off (hey, it's warm!) and suddenly I'm not that tiny innocent looking girl anymore, but rather a tiny tattooed person who looks badass (i think :D)

      +Kaylin Walters I want my first tattoo to be a sternum piece too! I'm just kinda concerned that the pain might be too much, because I really have no idea what it feels like getting tattooed, therefore can't make any assumptions about my pain tolerance. How did you experience it?

    When I got my first tattoo, I went to a guy that my dad had been going to for awhile. He does American traditional tattoos, and he helped me kind of decide where I should place it. I told him that I wanted to eventually have a sleeve as well. My dad also gave me some input, and It really helped me! Having two people that have been tattooed many times; I think helped me find a good placement. Also wanted to say I love your videos! :D

    I've actually traced a generic body form onto a piece of paper and drew basic concepts onto it to sorta map out where I want each piece to go and get a general idea of how I want my body as a whole to flow. I'm definitely a planner, so this really helps me visualize my tattoo goals and keep things aesthetically balanced.

    I always used to think I only wanted small simple tattoos...
    I got a small spider in the middle of my upper back- wasting a lot of space.
    I was lucky enough to figure out a piece to work around it (I got a massive spiderweb between branches)
    It's sometimes difficult to know how your style will change!!

    yeah. unfortunately the only tattoo i have slight regret with is script on my collarbone. and the only reason i slightly regret it is where its placed. Im a server , and ive had both men and women (without notice) pull my shirt down to read it. -_- which goes without saying gets fucking old really quick

  • @kagitsune

    I think another factor is proportion. Not just size, but also angle and placement relative to the shape/silhouette of the body as a whole. On my latest tattoo, I wanted to avoid my clavicle because of the pain, but after two stencil placement attempts I realized that moving just a bit onto the clavicle would really turn a somewhat boring, "passive" angle into an engaging, active angle. Hard to describe without pictures.... I guess if you think about Japanese arm/pectoral tattoos, that angle as the tattoo flows from the chest to the shoulder is really dynamic and beautiful. If they were angled down, they'd make the body look droopy, which isn't necessarily the desired effect.
    Another factor is probably movement. I have a tattoo above my knee that looks on-center when I stand, but off-center when I sit or crouch, just because of how the skin moves over the bones and muscles. My latest artist also informed me that movement will also effect the healing time. That knee tattoo took much longer to fully heal than my two arm tattoos, for example.

    • @jackystar5099
      @jackystar5099 4 роки тому

      It's been a while but I agree. Getting my first tattoo soon and the artist told me my tattoo wouldn't be very good on ribs because of movement. Hadn't thought of that much before but it makes sense.

    I have nerdy tattoos, one that can be taken a different way and not from a videogame but also one that is straight up the Eye of Sauron, but when I figured out where I wanted these tattoos, I already knew what I wanted, I believe the sauron tattoo I had been thinking about for awhile but the day of(because it was last minute) i changed the style and I love it ever since, but I pick the placements on how I think the tattoo will look best. Basically I pick the body part that compliments the tattoos, not myself persay.

    Totally feel you. I am having a little banger on my arm covered right , because I didn't consider future work when I got it. It just didn't fit with my goals now. Loved your thoughts on visible tattoos and style as well! I have some new skool and some neo traditional/traditional along with other styles. One theme that connects them all is the use of reds and yellows and strong line work. It's a habit that an artist I did a lot of work with got me turned onto to make things flow better.

    Personally I believe that Neotraditional and realism can definitely stand alone. A realistic portrait looks pretty finished to most people. I also believe in mixing styles on the same limb. I think a lot of people might look at that as messy but to me it seems very personal. I for example love almost every style and as a collector I would love to get various styles by various artists. And since I only have two arms and two legs the only way to fit all of them on my body is by mixing styles.

    My first ever tattoo was on my wrist. A lot of people thought it was a bad place for a first tattoo, but for me the reason why I wanted it done on my wrist was because I wanted to be able to see it every day and see how it feels to wear a tattoo.

    Could you make a video touching on the subject of tattooing over scars? Maybe you've covered it before but I haven't seen one from you! I really want to get a tattoo over a large area (upper thigh) that is covered in thick, raised scars. I've seen people talk about tattoos over scars but when they show photos of the before (as in, the way the scars looked before they were tattooed over) and none of those scars are as wide/long/raised as mine. I know I need to talk to a tattoo artist in person to get a really good opinion about if it's even possible (will the scar tissue take the ink? Will the bumpiness distort the image and make it look bad? etc), but I'm so terrified to have to show someone and I'm worried about judgement, I guess. I haven't found my ideal tattoo artist yet so I've been putting off this tattoo even though it's the one I want the most. If you (or anyone in the comments reading this) has any advice or insight, please let me know!!
    Also, would it help to show my dermatologist and get her opinion? I see her for acne but maybe she would have some ideas on how to reduce the scars, even though they're years old. I again really don't want to show her them, but really I think I'll do anything to find a way to get tattooed over these.

      Hi there! I had a tattoo done over some pretty nasty self harm scars on my upper arm. It is most likely that lines won't be super crisp over scars, and anything overly intricate will just blow out. However, this being said, I have a lovely floral piece on my arm that my artist designed so that the bolder lines would be covering the scars and the rest is more intricate. Honestly, a tattoo artist will not judge you, they see hundreds of different bodies and they're all just a canvas to them! I think it would make you feel 100x better to go and talk to an artist, let them put you at ease and maybe it will make you feel more confident about your scars 😊

    • @princesssarah1213
      @princesssarah1213 8 років тому +1

      Leona Chapman I didn't experience any blow outs on mine. I also have song lyrics that are on my right and left side. My right side has my scars and the left has none. Both lettering is crisp and legible. However every body takes ink differently. I agree about the tattoo artists. Artists in general find beauty almost everywhere. Getting my tattoos has given me acceptance over my scars and my body.I turned something I was ashamed and embarrassed of into something beautiful. I hope you had a similar experience.🌼

      If you can afford, first have the scars removed by injection/laser. That's what I did and now I don't even need the tattoos to cover my scars as they are flat and on my inner arms but I want them anyway. Good luck!

    All these tips are very important. I, for example, have a dilemma where I want a large stand-alone backpiece, but at the same time I want a rib tattoo that extends to my back. I know I can't get them both because it would look strange, so I have to think hard which one I want the most (right now I'm pretty sure I'll get the backpiece). I also thought for the longest time that a tattoo behind your ear would be hidden, until my sister got the back of her ear tattooed and I realized it's not hidden at all when her hair is up. It might be obvious to some people, but it's easy to forget actually.

    I think when it comes to placement, an artist's opinion is very helpful also. Maybe you want a very large tattoo on a part of your body that wouldn't be so complimentary and so they suggest another area to make better use of the tattoo design. Video was very helpful and true, the realism tattoo/neo-traditional/etc vs traditional/line work/dot work placement planning is so true! I have a half sleeve of realistic characters done in black and grey and between sessions it always looked like something was missing until it was finally finished

    I also like the "hidden" tattoo idea. I only have two tattoos, both are for my parents. The first one I got done was on my left ribs for my mom and I went back the next day to get the one for my dad. The shape of my dad's is circular and although I hope to get a government job, the shape worked the best for my forearm. But since its just line work and is "tasteful" I was okay with it as a visible tattoo. Now if I wanted to get a sleeve it would be hard to incorporate it without it looking disjointed from the rest. For the most part I think I will only have smaller stand alone tattoos, because I'm more of a sentimental tattoo person as opposed to a tattoo collector. I do however want to get a drawing my grandma did, redrawn in a neo-traditional style, as the style she drew it in would probably would translate best to american traditional; however, that style doesn't really suit me as a person. That will probably be the only full piece I'll get done, and thats going on the hip.

    I have what I'd call "semi-visible tattoos". One's very discreet on my arm (super simple and small) and one on my ankle. When I walk around in off work clothes, you can see them fairly well, but when I'm in my slacks & polo you can't see any leg tattoos and my arm tattoo is so simple & small it goes generally undetected unless I point it out.
    I'd love to have more visible tattoos, but in the way my life is headed, I don't think it would work well for me in employment ways

    Also,, I’ve kinda been working “backwards”, getting areas like my wrist or elbow done first that most ppl do last. This really works for my brain cause I’m able to look at the negative space for a while to decide what else will fit!

    This was really helpful! I loved your tips. Also, could you maybe do a video on tattoo anxiety? It sounds odd, but being someone that has few tattoo and is still working on finding a long term artist, I find myself being really anxious entering a new shop. Maybe it's because I only have two tattoos, or I'm just not used to being tattooed yet. 🤷🏼‍♀️ do you have any tips to ease anxiety leading up to an appointment?

    This was very helpful. I've been putting a lot of thought into my next tattoo (I only have one on my foot for now). I originally wanted my next tattoo on my thigh, but I saw a picture of someone with a tattoo right above their inner elbow and fell in love with that placement. I have really been going back and forth with the idea of wanting to have a tattoo that will be visible most of the year for me. Your first point was very helpful in helping me think through that decision. (:
    P.S. I love your new hair color. ❤

    I like that you mentioned how tattoos go together. I am a tattoo collector (that's poor so I only have a few thus far), however none of the styles match. I have a cartoony Harry Potter tattoo that covers a decent portion of my back, but there's a lot of negative space, a traditional anchor on my hipbones, some celtic font/quote on my ribs, and I'm soon to get my dogs paw prints as a piece I'll constantly add to as I adopt dogs over the course of my lifetime. I don't think any of my pieces go together, and the future tattoos I have might not go together either, but each one is like a portion of my personality, and how I've grown, in art form. If I was more imaginative, I could have planned out my whole body so it would all look like one cohesive piece. But, I'm not like that, and I like making it up as I go along and looking back on how I have grown as a person by looking at the art I put on my body during that period of my life. It's cool that some people put that much thought into how everything matches, I'm just not one of those people... a tacky tattoo collector, and I'm okay with that ;)

    • @UndergroundLeather
      @UndergroundLeather 8 років тому

      +Lacey Mackenzie nope, my tattoos don't go together and I'm fine with that. there are many dimensions to my personality, so I don't expect my tattoos to be one style. If you can plan that far ahead and make them all the same style, that's awesome and it looks cool, it's just not what I'm doing with my canvas.

    I agree with your comment about what styles look like statement pieces and can go by themselves while other pieces look unfinished.
    I recently got my first tattoo,(movie themed sleeve) and I've been watching your videos for awhile so a ty for the tips BTW, and my tattoo does look unfinished, I get comments saying "why did you get "so and so" tattooed on you?" when its unfinished. I mean it's a bit annoying explaining "hey its not finished I'm adding more scenes from the movie" but hey, a few questions along the way for x amount of months until its finished will be worth it when its finished in the long run. These tips are great! Keep up the good work!

    I hate the feeling of the "unfinished traditional sleeve"! It's something that haunts me on the daily, but of course I want to think about what I'm getting, and not start slapping on random traditional pieces to take care of my need to fill up my arm! I think about placement and styles constantly, and I have no idea what to get on the upper area of my arm - I feel like it is such an important place of your arm, where a somewhat of a statement piece belongs, and it's tough deciding what i want to be the main focal point is going to be.

    I personally always consider the size of the area being cohesive with the size of the tattoo, e.g. small tattoo? small place like foot, wrist, behind ear? Large tattoo? Back, thigh, arm? I find that this helps a lot with minimising the risk of things looking unfinished as a small piece in a large area might :)

    i'd love to see a TTT on how different styles of tattoo age, and how different styles look together. you mentioned telling your artist if you want to build a sleeve so they can help you. in the past, you've mentioned it's best to go to someone who specializes in a certain type of thing.
    so, considering this- i have this halfsleeve idea growing in me that combines my love for a certain style of old fairy tale drawings, with nature and science, with geometric design, and i want some of it in watercolor style, and some in different style. and i don't really know how to get an artist to combine those concepts if they aren't proficient in all of those themselves, you know?
    but i want it to feel cohesive and i want it to look good. i've heard a lot of naysaying about watercolor designs not holding up over time (mostly by artists who don't do that style, heh) but then i've read that it's all about designing it correctly and taking care of it, just like any other tattoo. so i'm a bit confused on that front. i'm still at least a year or two out (unfortunately) from having the money free'd up to really invest in this stuff, so i'm still in figure it all out mode right now.
    also, can you get an artist to put a stencil of it on you and let you wear that around for a day or so to see how well you feel about the design elements as they are wrapped on your body? is that done? i feel like that would be helpful to me. my first tattoo that i got on a whim when i was 18 is embarrassing to me and doesn't have any real meaning to me and is fading badly, and i waited a long time to be ok with myself before i was ready to give it another, better go.
    so making a mistake with it is something i don't want to do again. which is why i'm somewhat grateful that i can't spare the cash to dive in just yet, anyway. more time to mull over the choices that i want in just the way i want them. your vision board idea really helped me start pulling my likes and dislikes together so i can better articulate what i am looking for. anyway, i'm a wordy fuck.

    I wish I would have had this advice when I got my first tattoo. I have two tattoos that are really beautiful that we're oddly placed because at first I wasn't planning on getting more. However now I plan on getting a lot of tattoos all over my body so I'm constantly thinking of how I'm going to plan things. So one of the things that I like to do when planning tattoos and their placement is I will look on the Internet at how other peoples tattoos are placed on their body to get an idea of how I would like mine placed. I may not necessarily want the same design as a person but I get inspiration for Heather tattoos are placed within their body. For an example I know but I want to get a big chest piece that goes across my chest full of different flowers and kind of had a style or Paisley and I know that means that I don't want to just get one little chest tattoo but that it will be a big piece that I work on. I have a Music trouble clef on my forearm that looks really nice and looks beautiful on its own but now I'm trying to figure out other tattoos that I can put around it and it is a little tricky.

    When I got my first visible tattoo I didn't realize how much of a "statement" it seems like to people. I got a flash cockroach on my arm, above my inner elbow, and in my short sleeved work shirt working behind a counter it's pretty noticeable so I got a lot of comments on it. I plan on getting my arm done but since it's currently my only highly visible tattoo people tend to assume it means something and ask me questions about it, often rudely. I'm really looking forward to late October when I'm getting another piece next to him so he won't be the main focus of my tattooed body.
    In retrospect, maybe I should've gotten a less "provocative" first visible tattoo, as right now it's annoying and frustrating when customers who I'm trying to help are being incredulous and rude about my little buddy.
