- The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring takes the saloon's slick styling, updated chassis, modern in-car tech and punchy engines and adds a boatload of extra practicality in the form of a roomier estate rear end. Will this E-Class Estate, Audi A6 Avant and Volvo V90 rival lead the field of does BMW's latest effort disappoint? I head to the international launch in Germany to find out.

But should i avoid it, consider it, short list it or go right ahead and buy it? i dont know !?
You should consider to avoid go right ahead and buy it.
Amusing, well written review - entertaining Mat, well done. Many thanks.
another very good test Mat. thank you and good luck
Ordered this in 520d M Sport trim last weekend...CANNOT wait. Perfect family car for those fed up with boring SUVs
NICE! How has your car been - a year on?
Glad you can afford it, im going for a vauxhall insignia estate
how is the car working for you did you have any issues??
@@781mm I really loved it, so did my family/passengers. I since changed it to a x3
@@SuperDare83 so finally you bought a suv!!??
Own one since December 2019 and now driven 78000 km. This review helped me make the purchase. I was at BMW today and saw the new BMW 5 series which has sharper lines and looks more futuristic. This version while older still looks fine and is ageing well😊
i m looking to buy one from 2020 with 70000-100000KM. is eiter this or the 2020 3 serie?. im doing highways everyday 140+Km so yea whats ur oppinion? and cost u had already execept maintenance?
@@thibo764 you need to decide first between the 3 and 5 series. If you are alone most of the time then 3 series is more than enough. If you travel a lot with family and if there are adults going to sit behind then definitely 5 series. But i think 3 series should be “adequate” for 90% of usage. If you drive upwards of 140km everyday then I would recommend the 330D or 530D which comes with the 3 litre 6 cyclinder engine. If I could do it again then I would probably go for the 545e LCI version which has the 3 litre 6 cyclinder engine and also has the battery useful for short distances. The car has low maintenance costs. In my case I had an issue with swing arms in the front suspensions which was not diagnosed correctly do ended up having to change brakes 2 times in 12 months but BMW covered a lot of the cost. Aside from the issue with brakes, just had couple of minor issues with the TPMS sensors. Rest was all regular service and maintenance related to oil changed etc. If you are financially smart and disciplined then 330D or 530D from 2019-20 is the way to go!!!
thx for this knowledge. im kinda scared for the maintenace cost of the 3liters diesels. + in my country they punish u very badly with high taxes for the 3 liters caus ur not saving the earth..... . main reason to use is for work but also for holidays . im checking to see if i find some 3 liters perhaps. but the taxes are a triplle of the 2 liter diesels. thx for the info

Excellent review. Great points made on the Tailgate and the Steering.
UK police force are going to love this
Dezz9820 I think they are just fine with their skodas
Dezz9820 lol
I've never seen one drive a skoda in my area lol. They all drive 5 series or astras
Not quite sure they'll be this well specced though.
Dezz9820 and A4 estates
Nice vid!
Btw: will you ever do a review of the M550d Touring anytime soon?
Thanks UA-cam recommendations for making me watch a Matt review from 2 years ago 😍
My god, what a gorgeous side profile. Especially towards the rear.
Every vidio I watch that you's make makes me smile. Top men and ladies? Great video again. Jon from Ireland Dublin.....
Even Matt is aware of how weather changes depending of whether your are inside or outside :-)
Lovely car. Just like almost any BMW !
@0:19 The automatic steering adjustment for easy hop in and steering column back to its place when the door closed is extremely detailed tech comfort 👍
My uncle has a new 5 series saloon and I must say, the gesture control feature is just 👌
I live in East Europe and i'm looking forward to import one of these for 10.000 euros in 2030 hahahaha
With 300 000km but odo will say 120 000km 😂
Deal
Great video review. Cheers. Think I'll get one
Did you test the gesture control system what happens when you are making the sign of the cross on yourself? Does it initiate an emergency breaking?
My favourite is the awesome headlights that splits in the middle to not blind others. It feels a bit like Moses when he split the ocean in two. I never tire from watching it xD
Great video. It is a straight 6 I presume?
I tested the 530d xdrive touring and 550d xdrive saloon and i have to say that it is the most confortable car i have ever driven, it is hard to point out anything bad about it except the turning radius
one think it still has the gear lever, not necessary in today's car.. but it's really really awesome.. tq bro.
i liked that you showed us the car mostly rather than your face like some other car reviewers wich i hate them for showing their face 90% of the time. good job.
Cheers, Mat. Cracking looking car.
fantastic car, with the v90 are the best for me.
hey matt, i want to see a comparison test between 5touring, v90 and E class !!!!! is possible to see in future?
best car ever and best review channel ever, wonderful!
The 530D xDrive M Sport is such an incredible car! Gesture control takes some getting used to but it is cool but that smart key is unreal
Matt..what are you doing with my favorite car?
I keep updating my feed in the wait for the release of the LCI.
I'd still go for the saloon but I have two questions about the 530d. 1) does it use AdBlue to deal with NOX, and 2) what's the turbo lag like. I went from an X6 4.0d to a Macan S Diesel and I really notice the missing turbo.
Mat is great reviewer!
Brilliant review! Love it. :)
These long reviews are better imho. I think you should do it more often.
That self driving is amazing!
Yes this car is great. I had a chance to be taken for a trip in this car 2017 3L Disel ( base 3L) and it is phenomenal. 2018 must be even better I guess although looks the same. Perhaps they added more gadgets.
Acceleration, smoothness of this car is great. If I could afford it would be in my garage right now. The owner told me that he did a trip London - Berlin in it and averaged 48 mpg and wasn't driving economically doing more than 100+ m/hr where he could, which is great for such a fast and big car.
I like the interior much better than any future concepts lol. I like that bms has a cd player still, as I love using cds.
3:16 Mat playin rock paper scissors with idrive..😹
Can you please review the Jaguar XF estate too....?
3:18 Love Matt's sense of humour
I love Estates. This one is beautiful and classy
The knee trick, I believe is the best quirk about the car. I can't tell if the engineers missed that or someone in the team thought "Why should I have my hands on the steering, when I can have my knee and just cruise?!"
Dimitris Kepenos just fit a bottle to the steering wheel and it will drive itself automatically forever
This I believe will be on my shopping list, I'm just unsure if they sell the 5 series in a station wagon format in canada. I only want it to be had in a diesel motor.
But the features they seem a little light on them like the 3 series
I have to say this 5 series touring does look pretty good , im a fan of Audi estate cars the A6 in my opinion is the nicest looking estate car especialy in S line but this new 5 series does look great aswell. Btw i like the new intro being a little different then as always '' This is the new ....... '' Love your videos Matt you're one of the best at the moment keep up the good work :)
you should review the Eclass estate 2017
The design of this car is great,it looks like sporty station wagon, also it looks very modern too!
it's a shame that all manufacturers don't use the lift tail gate feature on their estate car.....that said I love this car and all it's features.
please do a comparison of BMW X1, AUDI Q2 and SUZUKI VITARA.
As a true Swede I always prefer the estate versions of cars.
As a true Swede I hate BMW and love Volvo.
Just because you're Swedish that doesn't mean you have to hate BMW.
BMWs doesn't work very well in Sweden though, unless it is for a summer car.
Icenberg do u like keonigsegg
Icenberg enjoy your tractors LOL
how did you get one with the steering wheel on the proper side 😋😋😋
Guda Lawrence He didn't. 😉
Guda Lawrence It was filmed in Germany and the car provided was from BMW Germany.
Aristotelis Mitsiou OK.
Why British people say 'this motor is a 3 *Litre* blabla' but then change it to gallons when saying x miles/gallon
Cristi Because we are quirky and adorable. 😉
Cristi I don't think anyone gives engine capacity in gallons
All our road signs are in miles/yards too yet we use metric for measuring everything else....except speed, that's miles per hour too.
I think its just a transition phase, this sort of thing has to happen at some point seeing we're in the middle of going from imperial to metric :)
Alex Smith It's one hell of a slow transition Alex, I learned metric in school back in the 80's and the other measurements don't seem to show any evidence of changing here.
Is active cruise standard on the estate?
Mat, do a review on the 4 series
When you drive it via key, does it stop when its about to hit smth?
Love touring
but everything in the 5 series is in the 7 series right? is there anything extra?
Can you get the touring with the M550i 4.4 litre V8??
see...its a BMW! How can you hate these. Such a perfect car!
Andrei F it's very simple they are ugly af, it looks like a 2008 car with cheap wanna be tesla interior
Andrei F ugly af cars, why even buy german if its ugly af, nah ill just stay with audi and mercedes
4 scoops GODDAMMIT I used to like Audis but now i dont...the 2010 models were nice. And the Mercedes...im not a fan but they are okay
Its Me wow thats very nice🔥
Andrei F i think this and v90 are best sw! i love volvo and bmw cars
best looking wagon beside V90.
waiting for uk spec review
This is an awesome car. However at the end of the review, I was stuck with a thought about buying this thing second hand and the possibilities of all of this tech going wrong...
Gorgeous car but I still prefare the Saloon version.Great if you have alot to carry I guess.
I like touring cars, very practical and good looking
Will this come to the US?
I don't know why but estate cars are sexy
Really nice ute, but sadly we won't be able to see it very often in the streets due to the plethora of SUV's out there.
I drove one for a hire car a diesel M Sport it was nice to drive and the seats were semi comfy not as sumptuous as a Merc,my C-class was getting fixed so had this for 2 wks.A thirsty car but cruises nicely the downside I found was they say the media system is better than mercedes but I found the opposite also no folding door mirrors when locking the car in a car park..nice car but heavy compared to my mercedes c-class thought the bow equal is the E class. But when you put your foot down from starting off it goes but you can feel the cars weight, which in turn makes you feel safe but like I said it's thirsty.
I like ur reviews sir
does it have a manual transmission version?
Trying to work out the red tape.. Bmw no longer offer in the states... but heard a rumor that we can still order them... the 2020 530d is what i leaning towards...
Can you review an M3 please? (Including practicality)
So you made 2 different reviews of the same car? Are the engines different or what? Just curious
Does it show an open bonnet? :p
Trying to decide on a 540i and Volvo V90 T8. My wife likes SUVs though so might be an X3 M40i or Volvo XC60 T8. Can’t decide at all.
Best one out of the German trio.
Frocobo a6 is the nr 1 and Will always be the nr 1!
RS6 > all other estates
Brian you're right the a6 is outdated but it's still better then its rivals. Could you imagine when it gets updated again 😉
You guys seem to be mistaking my factual statement for a subjective opinion. ;)
Senad Cehaja issues? what kind of issues?
Can't wait for the i5 Touring...
Was it a problem to drive on a different side of the road?
Review Insignia 2017 !
I really like this car! Beautiful
Looks fantastic.
Review the BMW 3 Series Touring soon! :)
what if the battery gets over while driving it using the remote?
Nice sport family car😉I wait new audi a6 estate. This class (E class, bmw 5 and audi a6) are made for wide masses.
amazing car
Fantastic car.
I wish I had that bmw.
Can you try use your head to turn up the volume please???
That's fucking gorgeous
What is the color of the car ?
I am looking for an estate and can't get this car in the US, if I could, this would be my choice over the V90, and E400.
So the system shuts off and lets the car out of control after 10 seconds and it doesn't stay in lane any longer if you don't keep your hands on the steering wheel. What's the point of it then if it doesn't keep the car in lane?
Best looking 5series touring
All my wagon dreams are coming true!! Too bad they're just dreams waaaahhhhh
If only BMW would bring back the M5 Touring... 😢
How come BMW might not build an M5 Touring for the G31 generation?
I'm happy enough with the 550i touring, or the Alpina B5 touring if you want an insane amount of power.
550i or Alpina isn't enough ?
Niclas K I'm perfectly OK with a 550i or an Alpina B5, I'm only wondering why BMW might not build an M5 Touring for the G31 generation, that's all.
Usually it's based on what actually sells. Large corporations optimise like that, so niches get left behind.
Unless you're company is called Audi and you must make a S/RS model of EVERYTHING
Thank you.
I fucking love the knee on the wheel! So simple!
The glass thing it isnt something new because it was back in 2002 in e46 :)
Ariton Dermaku As He said, It's been on every BMW estate.
I dont know it just seems like he is presenting for the first time...
'estate cars are not particularly exciting'... Erm the Audi RS6?
rs6 is 4 yrs old
The 2017 model isn't though...
Luco Zade I agree it looks great! But it is an old car now.
Josh Street surely the power of it makes it exciting though? I mean come on.. 600hp for an estate car? If that doesn't excite you I don't know what will...
Luco Zade I don't doubt the power one bit and I do think the RS6 is a great car. The only thing rest let's it down for me is the interior. I also feel the same way about the A1. They are a bit dated.
Will they make an m5 version
Really like the look of these 5ers and used prices aren't so much different than a 3er, it's just a pity that many UK roads & towns (car parks) are a little small for the size of it - although is it really as bad as I think??
You just live in a village, it's large but not massive , will be fine. If postman pat can dot around his van you can too with the G30
Yes! Now 3 years later i can finally afford this
the back is much sexier on the older model, but the rest is better on this model
Flooded the car nicely Matt...
