carwow After seeing Matt standing on the doors and sitting on the roof of the car, it is pretty unlikely BMW will ever lend him a car to review again...
That sucks, I mean we don't have a proper supercar (i8 does not count as a supercar, it doesn't). We don't have an RS6-esque model in our lineup. If you want a fast touring, you are left to leave BMW and go to Merc or Audi.
I think it's based on what sells. For example, When BMW launched the E61 M5 Touring in 2007,they only managed to sell 1,056 of them - and that's just worldwide. And BMW also realised that there just wasn't a strong enough business case for a lightning fast, load lugging BMW.
I just love the 5 series wagon trunk, already on the e61 they had all those smart features and also some cargo dividers that are just genius... And my favorite thing, the opening hatch that can open independent from the trunk door
Just wanted to say it's awesome that you don't saddle us subscribers with every single video, like the infotainment ones that less people are interested in. Love the reviews, keep them up !
What is it with car reviewers and interiors? If there's loads of buttons, they say it looks "confusing". So BMW remove 90% of the buttons and now they say "It looks bland!"
Yeah mostly because it still manages to compete even though it's the last generation. Last generation mercs E and bmw 5's were garbage in comparison to the A6. Wait till Audi launches the new A6 and it's gonna be the same thing all over again
I’ve just bought a 68 plate one of these. Probably the favourite car I’ve purchased in 20 years, all the car you’ll ever need. Alongside my Alfa 156 that obviously blew up.
A positive bmw feature missed here are the auto adaptive LED Headlights. They are incredible in terms of maximising night visibility safely. Consider doing a group night drive test for those very high/ low hemisphere country's where we have VERY long winter nights.
Altough I love Mat's reviews, I must admit that he is very harsh with the cars. Not verbally but physically. He pulls and pushes and turns every button, door, handle or whatever very aggressively as if he owned the car for 5 years. Don't know if he notices it, but when he started opening these storage compartments on the BMW I expected them to fall off
I'm not loving all of BMWs design language right now, but that's a good looking estate. And those wheels are so cool. If they did the 550m in estate trim that would be incredible
The saloon car looks like a Kia from the side and an autistic jumbled up BMW from the back. I don't think that they should have taken the 7 series crap front...
Well design is always a question of taste. I personally love the design and think that it's decent step towards the correct direction. On the other hand, I like the design of the new mercs but they just look too similiar to each other. It's hard to differentiate between an S or an E class for example.
Rankon i agree that mercs look too similar to each other between its current classes, but at least they don't look the same between both classes and different generations like bmw and audi.
leo r and the new one will be flawed to begin with because they'll likely stick with the same engine layout and poor dynamics. Still, it will look the best inside and out and that counts for a lot.
Thomas Frank if you watch his reviews he never has any respect for the vehicles or an ounce of mechanical sympathy. I think it’s a “size” thing and he likes to dominate. Anyone who finds the M steering wheel too thick has wussies hands !
He didn't show that threre is space for rhe boot cover snd net in the underfloor storage. So you dont hsve to leave them propped up in the garage (like in other cars) you can stow them in the car along with all your gear.
Matt I love ur vids but on the digital display the "plastic curves "are not plastic , it's steal And I actually love that design in stead of a full display because it's not a standard car anymore
I think it is extremely important to include the price of the car featured in the video. These videos are very nice but can be frustrating being told that the prices start from £38k whilst the car featured costs more like £50-60k perhaps?
I find your reviews enjoyable, in fact so much that i nowadays watch them as soon as they come out no matter what car it is about, (off course i like your Volvo reviews a liiitle more) ....good job! Greeting from Sweden...
Wait two of the cons are not really cons. The fat steering wheel is one of the best if not the best feeling steering wheel in the business, and the trim around the dials looks amazing. Gives the car a unique look compared to just an LCD panel in front of you.
I wish we could have this in the U.S.! Nice job triggering Apple fanboys, then having an Apple laptop. Also, the phone pic was an E34 M5 estate! What was that about chucking estates on the back roads... Great video.
I had an Audi A8. No Android!! Loaded, heated and cooled, best massage back seats. No AUX JACK!! "We, Audi, made a deal with Apple.. " Thanks for your honesty. Back to the S Class.. Not as good in the Massage dept, 2012, but everything else was great.
The luggage area arrangements are pretty similar to what I had in a 2012 Mazda6 Estate. The moveable net arrangement is nearly identical. Difference with this car is that road noise doesn't tear off your ears like happens in the Mazda. If you've the money, buy the BMW.
Instead of Android Auto, BMW is focusing on A2A (Apps for Auto), which is part of the company’s ConnectedDrive platform. That allows apps to integrate deeply (and safely) with the car and, because it provides a stable developer interface, it allows the company to innovate faster. That’s mostly because it allows his group to work on its part of the in-car technology stack without having to stick to the slower innovation cycle that dominates the actual hardware part of the car business.
can you stick your phone on the drivers window with a noise meter app displaying so we get an objective reading for in-car noise? Otherwise, really excellent reviews as usual *****
You sure introduced a good way to spike comment numbers, Matt. Half of the comments below aren't even about the car but about the iOS - android debate.
So what is the best touring (Kombi) on the market today? (or tomorrow) . I have the E61 535d touring and in terms of comparison its still on a par or better than the majority of new tourers available today, and much cheaper. Though it is far from perfect in terms of design, it has its flaws but we forgive it, we love it! Fun fact - Our 12 year old diesel estate is a 170mph car. Thats right, it hits its limit of 155mph in 5th gear. Its now on 255k kms and it is still going strong, no rust and pulls like a train. PS 0-100kmph is 6.x seconds standard and if you can take off in 2nd gear it does it in the 5s.
Just seen one of these at Available Car and now I don’t want anything else. It was superb. When my Tiguan is due to be returned I’m having one of these. Trouble is I like my options ticked and this has many many option for many many pounds. But I’d be happy with adaptive LED lights and suspension
Dear Mat, reviewers never seem to mention weight when discussing model options. For example, according to BMW, the 520D weighs around 135 KG less than the 530D XDrive version. That's a bit like lugging the equivalent of your wife and kids around everywhere for the benefit of the options. In other models the weight penalty is even worse. Also, should heavy, wide cars be taxed as such and forget about the dodgy fuel/emissions tests?
All these cars, A6, E class, 5 series in estate form are pretty amazing. Why would you really need an SUV unless you go off road. These are all £10K cheaper.... or more.

Probably the most expensive that you can upgrade
carwow After seeing Matt standing on the doors and sitting on the roof of the car, it is pretty unlikely BMW will ever lend him a car to review again...
@@NZO_BE I think it's Harmon Kardon
Enzo Dean
The Harman Kardon is the most expensive upgrade possible but I don’t this car had this top upgrade.
I still love that BMW is using knobs for ac and other things. Honestly when driving is so much better than touch screens. Good review guys.
Not anymore
@dwade3202 yep. Not any more. Luckily I bought 7 series 2021 hahah
the amount of time and engineering gone into that car is astonishing, it's really incredible
Did I missed the part where you come back to underfloor storage compartment in the boot?
Vaidas Kurmauskas ooooh yeah!
I was about to say that
Exactly. And no answer to this point. Shame.
Practicality video
Vaidas Kurmauskas 100th like
The Net is actually designed to keep cargo from coming into the passenger cabin in a crash. Really smart safety feature
Paul Dyer I actually thought it was to keep my pet away from trespassing into the cabin.
Ialready had it in my E91 from 2007
Also had the same feature on an old 2000 330d, comes in handy for sure. I'd be disappointed if any touring newer than that didn't have it
Those 3D rims on the dials makes them special and unique. I like those. Fully flat screen is just dull.

Why is BMW not interested in putting an M5 engine in this, with an aggressive body kit?
Itumeleng Setilo because a touring and an m5 are for different purposes
That sucks, I mean we don't have a proper supercar (i8 does not count as a supercar, it doesn't). We don't have an RS6-esque model in our lineup. If you want a fast touring, you are left to leave BMW and go to Merc or Audi.
BMW ALPINA B5 ;)
Itumeleng Setilo because it won't be better than the RS6

The Zanzibarbarian i guess it’s rather about the design than the amount of buttons. The e class looks a bit more posh, which I don’t really like
r u kidding me? r u that blind? its obviously for the entertainment man hahaha chill! and bmw would have not lend them the car durh
They seem to be never happy.
That old 90s BMW 5 series touring in the middle arm rest. Nice touch!

I’ve just bought a 68 plate one of these. Probably the favourite car I’ve purchased in 20 years, all the car you’ll ever need. Alongside my Alfa 156 that obviously blew up.
How is it now?
My dad is called Gary and he bought a 20 plate 5 series this week and also owned a 156 about 21 years ago! How funny!
I'm fact it had been his dream car since he was in his early 20s and he loves it, always saying why would anyone need to buy anything more!
Such a nice car!
Got it in almost exact same trim. Really good car. Fuel economy is on par with 2l diesel.
So if the seats aren't comfy enough you can just sit on the roof and make your way down the highway. Nice!
Or if theres a pretty lady You just make her sit on your lap.

I love the New BMW design, seems like this is the gen is where they really shake off those atrocities from the Bangle era.
Riswan Ahmad P. You call this design from 15 years ago "new"?
Rankon it's not about the logo, lol. All cars keep their logo and Merc is an example of change is design. BMW and Audi use the same outdated ones.
The saloon car looks like a Kia from the side and an autistic jumbled up BMW from the back. I don't think that they should have taken the 7 series crap front...
