Palumbo Music store in the Bronx had the Univox Rippers stocked in their store back in the 70's. By the time I was old enough to afford one they were sold out and discontinued.😢
Man! I can’t wait for a proper review/showcase of this guitar! I have been researching and looking for a ripper for years. I did finally find an early example in the natural finish on eBay, I am in the process of replacing the bridge, the original is not great, everything else works great. Looking forward to seeing your take on these fire breathing super strats!
I have a Tan Ripper all original w/the original case. I bought off my guitar teacher in 1983. Mine needs to be re-fretted too. I love the sound of the 3 humbuckers.
It's very likely that those frets are close to original condition. The Univox's of that period were "fretless wonders" like the SGs and Les Pauls of the early 70s. I find them unplayable in terms of bending but I have five Rippers and two have been refretted (natural finish and an Eagle) with medium jumbos and a blender switch to get all the pickup combinations and they play like a dream, two (white and black) I use for slide with high action so the frets don't really matter, and one (natural) that I keep entirely stock because that's the standard Ripper that most people think of.
You are right about the low frets. These are worn down in places where they are nearly level with the fret board. It is going to get some medium jumbos as soon as I can get the time. Everything else is pretty straight. No wonder it took me so long to find one you have them all.😄Thanks very much for the comment!
Let's tear it apart and look at the guts.. matsumoku guitars are good value.. just dug out my early 80's Lotus bass with neck through and brass inlays.. didn't know it was Matsumoku made until I did some research.. love seeing these gems.. thanks!..

I bought a Ripper in 1976 and it was my first guitar. Unfortunately I sold it about 10 years ago for the money. I’d like to find another one.

I have that exact Ripper. Got it in trade for work I did as a teenager. All original.
Well, I can definitely say it with conviction now: "Well, now, there's somethin' you don't see every day!"
Nice guitar. I've been wanting one of those for years.

@@justinrayguitars6024 any interest in selling the eagle ripper?
@@tommygungd not at this time. I been looking for one for several years.
Mine was essentially new when it was stolen along with its case in a home robbery in 1978. Let me know if you find it.
Hate that happened. As few of them were made it may turn up one of these days.
@@justinrayguitars6024 I wish I had the original receipt with serial number. It meant a great deal to me.

Ripper of a guitar with the 3 buckers !
Certainly worth the effort to bring back to life !
Well that's something I've never heard of or seen before and I was hoping you were going to plug that in and let me hear those pickups
