Demo reminds me of Dust in the Wind. I have a 1978 P4 Univox Hi Flyer with those pickups you mentioned in the video as being sought after. The reason they're that good is that Epiphone had guitars made in the same factory. So, parts essentially got swapped over from Les Pauls and such. For 100 dollars in the 70's, you get something sounding as nice as a Gibson, and this Eastwood replica guitar sounds very close to the Real thing. Great review and the closest new guitar for a vintage 70's sound.
Fuck! I reckon out of all the guitar reviews I have ever seen, yours are the best , heaps of info and just enough playing the thing at the end. AND you're a nirvana fan like myself , so I'm giving you a 4 smiley face rating out of four. Well done mate.
Love your videos. I have both a eastwood hi flyer phase 4 and, a phase 4 univox hi flyer. I'd have to say that eastwoods model sounds better. What do you think?
Im so fortunate to own both a Phase 4 and 3(Phase 4 is black and has the Humbuckers and the Phase 3 is Sunburst with P90's style pu's). i'm gonna collect them all when i find them :)) but i'm gonna buy a Eastwood too just for fun.. even tho i'm not convinced its the same as the Univox and we'll just have too see how long the Eastwood last........ great vid!
Yea very close. The Phase 4 Eastwood is slightly thicker possibly but it's still a lightweight guitar and the neck is thin like the Hi Fliers. Thanks for watching!
It's a toss up. The Eastwood's feel more solid to me because of the nice bridge. I'm just happy to own an actual left handed version...I hate having to flip righty guitars.
WOW! You're SO fortunate, Joe, to own 1 out of ONLY 12 of these Univox's replica's made! Also, Idk if this is correct but according to Wikipedia, they say the Univox original is made out of plywood. Either way, Beautiful looking & sounding guitar! I feel that da only thing that would have made this guitar even more Beautiful is if they put the same large chrome tremolo plate on it as on your original Univox. Regardless, it sounds AWESOME, especially da clean channel! How much did this cost?
Today i bought a original white / maple phase 4 (exactly like the one you are reviewing here) but from 1976.. in great condition.. Bought it for 540 bucks with case included.. is that a good price?
I'm torn between buying a lefty Eastwood Phase 4 or a lefty Gibson SG 70's tribute. You have both, which do you prefer and if you were in my shoes which would you buy first? I'm leaning to the Phase 4 just cause it probably won't be made forever in lefty and SG's are easier to get ahold of.
hmm, two totally different guitars. My favorite guitars are Gibson SG's looks and sound wise. The Eastwood Phase 4 is unique, sounds GREAT, and is very limited in production. They only made 12 in left handed! I would go for the Eastwood to get one while you can. Gibson has started making a larger variety of lefty SG's so you could pick one up at some point too. Let me know what you chose! Thanks for tuning in!
Mike Robinson and his company Eastwood have been a Godsend for us lefties ... He offers great customer service and cool ass guitars. If you can't find something at Eastwood then come check us out ... PureSalem Guitars is lefty owned and run. All our models come in lefty versions and no BS markup. Check us out !!!
I swear this was my idea! i contacted them asking if they made a lefty version because i am in a Nirvana covers band and wanted to flip it right handed to give that illusion of a mirrored kurt cobain haha ...never could afford it though when he finally had them made. gutted :(
Feels like a Fender tele or strat...thinner than a Gibson neck but nice and smooth. I think it would be great for medium sized hands. Thanks for tuning in! Be sure to subscribe to my channel!
+Generic Commentator I've owned multiple Univoxes. Go for the proper lefty Eastwood. It plays just as well if not better plus you won't have the knobs interfering. The Eastwood sounds killer!
Bryan Braddock yeah but because he could play it left handed because on hi flyers the bottom horn is longer then the top. they are all really ment for left handed but right handed to as come. And he like playing them.
It has been 6 years since u posted this comment. But I am in same situation. LOL. I would chose jaguar, but I am also a sophomore without a job sooo... put it simply, I don't have much money.
@@tylerkenney5007 Hello, thanks for your reply. I bought a jaguar 3 years ago. I like it but prefer the phase IV. The jaguar is heavy...about 13lbs, the phase IV is very light and not hard on your back. The pickups on the Jaguar are very hot and for me only sooth one style of playing...however I am not a virtuoso and some people get much better sound out of it than me. I'm happy I have a Jaguar but factor in the price of the phase IV and I would be please with that one only.
@@philparadise3702 Thank you for the response, I could not find a whole lot of information on this guitar to begin with. If I were doing 100% heavy music, then the jaguar would be better. But for more variety, the phase 4. Is that kinda what you would say? And also, how is the quality of the phase 4 compared to the jaguar? THX
Damn. I had that original Univox as my first guitar in 1978-79. I paid $75 and hated it because it was upside down looking. It's not exact. Mine had a fender style tremolo from the Jazzmaster. The trem sucked (no way it could be used and stay in tune) but it had good action. I dont think it had that string tree either. I used to play My Sharona and The Kinks on it.
Has anyone else that has this guitar experienced tuning problems? Mine doesnt seem to stay in tune at all.... I don't own this guitar but I've seen people on a couple of different forums complaining of the same thing. I would switch out the tuners for some brand name ones.
In the sunburst Univox there is a Seymour JB in the bridge. Unsure of what SD in the neck...it was like that when I got it. Thanks for subbing and tuning in!
actually the univox looks cooler when a lefty plays it upside down. I remember the heart shaped box video, Kurt had the white one.
I agree

I appreciate it man. Thanks for the support and for subscribing! -Joe
Ordered one of these babies! Can't wait!
You will love it!
Hey, just wondering what you think of it? How is the quality compared to other mij fender guitars?
@@BrewersArcade How does this compare to the kurt cobain jaguar?
huh very interesting facts! Thanks for sharing and supporting my channel!
This is a long shot, but might you still have this and would you sell?
@joebrewer
I haven't played out with it "live" with my band but just jamming at home I've found it to be pretty stable...the tuners are nice quality
I had a real Univox for many years. I just couldn't avoid hitting that damn toggle switch while playing. Drove me nuts.

I love your reviews man keep it up ill be watchjng for more. Thanks for the awesome review
Hey man I really appreciate the support and nice comment! Thanks for subscribing! More videos soon!
I played one of these today man. I was blown away! I know the guitar is most definitely worth $600, but it's a lot.

sound starts at 5 mins

Holy shit yes
Nice review, nice to find a lefty reviewer, i was wondering how's the stability of the tuning??
Great Review. What's the shape of the neck? Does it feel like a Fender/Gibson? Good for medium size hand?
Hey man i just wanted to say i just love your vids!

why don't you guys send a Classic Creep or Tomcat my way to review?! You need to promote that you make lefty versions! I'm your man.
Awesome review man!
does the position for pickup switch have a problem when you strumming with more force which can cause accidentally change the pickup sound position?
I really REALLY want this guitar so bad
dive, dive, dive, dive in me!!!!!
DIVE IN ME

TOTALLY agree...esp. being a lefty I hit that switch constantly. It's still not in a great spot if you are really slamming on the guitar
Is Eastwood guitars provide a soft case when buy this model?
Feels like a Fender tele or strat...thinner than a Gibson neck but nice and smooth. I think it would be great for medium sized hands. Thanks for tuning in! Be sure to subscribe to my channel!
i agree it is hard to find left handed guitars lol i been trying to find a decent used one for a good price.
Here's my dilemma: I'm a lefty, i like the univox phase 4 (tried one). I don't mind using a right handed guitar, so whats better, Univox or Eastwood?
+Generic Commentator I've owned multiple Univoxes. Go for the proper lefty Eastwood. It plays just as well if not better plus you won't have the knobs interfering. The Eastwood sounds killer!
BrewersArcade thanks mate, I was clueless which one would sound better due to the Univox's humbuckers costing 3 times more.
Now 4 years later you can pick up a left handed Eastwood phase 4 for $699
kurt cobain It's so expensive compared to the ones Kurt bought
Bryan Braddock yeah but because he could play it left handed because on hi flyers the bottom horn is longer then the top. they are all really ment for left handed but right handed to as come. And he like playing them.
Now they’re 899.00 lol I bought a used one a few months back for 390.00. Its in mint condition!!!
is the body just as thin as the original univox?
Phase IV or Cobain Jaguar??? Thank you!!!
phase 4 is much cheaper

There ya go, you have the original with the trem, mine was white like the reissue.
So what kind of amp you playing out of.
whats the neck profile like?
Now only If I had the money to get it...

I haven't had any issues but I've never used it live. I would recommend emailing Mike Robinson at Eastwood Guitars. Maybe your guitar needs a set up?
Because it's a cheap plank of shit. Literally
12 only ? You are serious ? They don’t made more after this video ???
Are these made in the usa?
Which pickups do you have in the sunburst one?
In the sunburst Univox there is a Seymour JB in the bridge. Unsure of what SD in the neck...it was like that when I got it. Thanks for subbing and tuning in!
Ok thanks for the info. Love your videos.
as far as I'm aware
It isn't in the greatest spot but I haven't hit it on accident very often
guitar sounds = 7:55 .....
What is rare about it... I'm curious
+Mike Honcho the fact that they made less than 25 left handed versions...
Not as many left handed guitars are made
It's mose-rite...not mas-rite.
Tomato...To ma to
Bloody hell! Nice Univox Custom bro! What pups do you have in that sexy bitch? :D
