  • I get asked by many people with gum recession; "How can I reverse my receding gums?" or "Can I grow my gums back?"
It's important to remember that receding gums get worse overtime and the progression of gum recession is often caused by trauma to the gum tissue!
In this video, Dr. Joseph Nemeth gives 10 pieces of advice for those suffering with receding gums.
    1. When you have gum recession, you should try to use a manual toothbrush instead of an electric toothbrush
    2. Do not hold your toothbrush with a fist! Hold it with your fingertips.
    3. When you brush your teeth with gum recession, it's important to use a specific technique. On your upper teeth, brush your gums downward, and on the lower teeth, brush your gums upward.
    4. If you have receding gums, make sure you use a soft bristle toothbrush. There are now super soft toothbrushes available online at Amazon. This is not an advertisement for these super soft toothbrushes. However, we feel these are great for people suffering from gum recession and they still do an excellent job of cleaning the teeth.
    5. Dr. Nemeth does not recommend using an electric toothbrush if you have thin gums. However, if you do use an electric toothbrush, make sure you hold it with your fingertips. This ensures that you're not putting a lot of pressure on your gum tissue.
    6. If you smoke cigarettes or vape with nicotine, consider quitting. Nicotine causes a constriction of the blood vessels. In other words it limits the blood flow throughout your body. If your gum tissues are not getting an adequate blood supply, it is much more likely that they will be thinner and be subject to #gumrecession
    • Is Vaping Really That ...
    7. If you do notice gum recession, the sooner you act the better! Receding gums have a tendency to progress overtime. So, the quicker you can enact these techniques, the better you will be in the long term. You should try to take some action to hault, or reverse the recession as soon as possible.
    8. It's very important to clean your teeth clean properly. So proper flossing habits and brushing habits are critical. I actually don't like dental floss. I prefer inter-proximal brushes and interdental cleaners. If you'd like to learn more about interdental brushes and their use, I have a video for you here! • Interdental Brushes - ...
    9. Sometimes orthodontics are necessary. However, you should understand that braces have been known to contribute to gum recession later in life. I would say about 70% of my gum recession patients have had orthodontics in the past. If you see that your braces are causing gum recession, you should talk with your orthodontist about what the next best step is for you to treat gum recession.
    10. If you're careful you can possibly avoid gum recession. If you do have #recedinggums exposed tooth roots, tooth sensitivity or other symptoms of receding gums, you should try to reverse it with some of the techniques I've listed. However, if these do not work, or if the recession is so severe that you feel you need treatment, we offer the best solution available to date, The Pinhole Technique.

Gum Recession occured if you press hard or try to scrub your teeth hard. There lots of people who use electric and never experience Recession. And those people get perfect dental check ups. And there dentist that offer patients Oral B electric toothbrushes, and also teach their patients how to brush and how to apply light pressure. And Oral B brushes have a pressure sensor.

I've never liked electric toothbrushes because of the vibration, despite growing up being force-fed the idea that electric toothbrushes are better, I'm now glad I've always stuck with manual brushing.

My periodontist told me I have big teeth, thin gum tissue (with not a lot of bone underneath) and a really small jaw, so unfortunately recession is just inevitable for me no matter how well/gently I clean my gums and how healthy I eat :/ I haven't had a cavity in 8 years and I clean my teeth perfectly, go to the dentist every 6 months and she tells me how well I am cleaning my teeth, but still if someone were to look at my smile they'd think I'm a regular smoker who doesn't brush their teeth :( Just shows that some things are purely genetic! So never judge someone for their teeth/smile cause you don't know what caused them to look like that.

studies show that the brush you use is not the cause of gingival recession, some people brush their teeth with the same intensity as they wash their shoes or the car.

I like both. Sonic at night and manual in the morning and afternoon.
Manual: GUM Sensitive Technique Deep Clean Toothbrush has slightly longer bristles on the outer edge to really get into gumline. They make a FULL HEAD and a COMPACT HEAD for sensitive gums. They are both soft, but the compact head one, has slightly softer outer bristles which are a hair longer than the full head.

I have bad tooth decay. Started from my wisdom teeth. They grew in as a teenager, and didn't cause any issues except one tooth sightly crossed in front of another. Did most of my heavy chomping with those wisdom teeth until they got hollow.

I had root scaling and planing because of this and my bone was receding please this isn't a joke you will lose your teeth if you don't clean brunch floss and rinse with mouth wash and never rinse the tooth paste out of your mouth with anything let it sit and work spit out the excess and leave the rest floss and mouthwash at least twice a day or you will regret it as I did

Hi, i have the same issue. I watched many other youtube videos, one thing i do now when brushing, if it's the upper teeth, brush from up to down. If it's the lower teeth, brush from down upwards. Follow where the the teeth grow. Though sometimes i brush circled or the opposite when there is food between the teeth, just to get them removed. But, i no longer brush for a long time now. I dont see any improvement yet, but hoping it's not getting worse. Also, i watch other dentist said xylitol is good, so im getting that next.
