    I remember this so vividly, I was 10. Within a beat of the black screen turning into the BBC2 ident, my mother said “Queen Mother’s gone, then”. I recall being seriously spooked at the time!

      @@iVenge I'm genuinely interested in how it looks, especially given how lacking in suitable idents BBC One seem to be now. Given Philip's age, it surely has to be coming in the next few years?

    I remember this vividly. As soon as the picture faded out I knew straight away what it was going to be. I turned to my friend and said I bet they’re going to be announcing the death of the queen mother. Every time I see this episode of Steptoe I keep expecting the picture to fade out.

    Do they not realise, by the time they get the BBC1 simulcast on air, everyone will have already gone to BBC1 to watch it?

    • @CJFS00s
      @CJFS00s 4 роки тому +11

      Erm no the news report at 4:47 happened the same time as BBC 1, that’s why it’s called a simulcast 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @shinydavidhowell
      @shinydavidhowell 3 роки тому +14

      In this case BBC2 had already faded out when the newsroom said they weren't ready, so BBC1 - who hadn't - didn't fade out until they were.
      What's absolutely remarkable in retrospect is that ITV didn't go first. They were literally in a bulletin at the time! Perhaps that actually slowed them down, although it wasn't for obviously unsuitable clothing - Mary Nightingale, on duty that night, was in a grey suit.

      It's kind of remarkable that ITV didn't break the news first given that delay, seeing as _they were literally in the middle of a regular news bulletin at the time_. Impossible to imagine anything other than half the country finding out what had happened in those few minutes via online announcements if this scenario played out in 2018.

      the question isn't what _happened_ but what _happens_ on cbbc and it's a darn good one. Given, though, that all BBC channels will interrupt their program you'd expect cbbc to do the same but then again, that's not exactly something that should be on a kids' channel. Maybe they have a special kind of program which is kid friendly which will air...

      BBC Choice existed (BBC Three in all but name). Doesn't matter, because it wouldn't be on air until 7pm anyway.
      CBBC would have been live, maybe they went to Newsround or flashed up a caption.
      Cbeebies likely wouldn't do anything (maybe the caption).

    • @InsaneGamersOfficial
      @InsaneGamersOfficial 6 років тому +6

      CBeebies protocol is to do nothing as far as I can tell. Everything on it is pre-recorded days in advance unlike CBBC which is live. If they do decide to interrupt the only thing they would be able to do is place a caption on screen. But it wouldn't surprise me if they change the schedule over the next few days afterwards. For Remembrance Sunday (think Veterans day) they ran a short 5 minute cartoon that explained war and death ua-cam.com/video/pv_ub7Be7oA/v-deo.html. They might have something like that for a royal death.

    • @SOSOwner
      @SOSOwner 6 років тому +2

      BBC Three obviously didn't exist until February 2003, but even if it did, it wouldn't start until 7pm. CBBC probably would have cut to Newsround, Cbeebies probably either just put up a caption or continued to run. BBC Four would have been on at 7pm, BBC One and BBC Two interrupted their programming and went to the news and News 24 would have not been affected, since it's always live and it would have cut straight to the news, just more seamlessly.
