  • The history of 99X - WNNX Atlanta 99.7 FM 1992-2002 and beyond. This video consists of two parts: First, the stations 10 year anniversary Morning X show with additional clips. Then, 99X's over all soundscape and imaging from 1992-2002 and a bit beyond. There are only 60 photos included in this video because, this is radio! I do recommend using headphones and playing in full screen. With that, let the nostalgia take hold and Enjoy!

I literally remember listening the day that Power99 turned into 99x. While all of my friends traveled over to Star94, I fell in absolute love with the music that spewed out of my little red boombox speakers while on that dial. All of my favorite teen and young adult memories are centered around that music. 99x Big Day Out Festivals & Chinese New Year were EVERYTHING. Thank you for sharing this! It's made my day to go back into history!

I grew up in Forsyth, GA. We could get 99X here and most of Macon. This was always my go to station.

We lived our lives completely unaware that they were some of the most significant and happiest days we will have ever known.
I moved to FLA in 1999 and eventually latched onto O-Rock 105.9 and WJRR 101.1, but 99X will always hold a special place and time for me.

Rick Beato mentioned this station in his video "The Fall That ROCKED the WORLD! What Happened In 1991?" At just after the 30 min mark he mentions Leslie (Fram) being one of his really good friends and plans to have her on his show. Looking forward to that.

90-2000 listener here. Everything changed so much within this time frame, power 99 became 99x the switch from pop to grunge then alternative then as it was dying whatever garbage was popular. In the early days of 99x the djs has a lot of freedom to play old songs and genres that were not familiar to my 10 year old self. Steve Craig taught me a lot. Then iPods and streaming and pop came back but it was not as good pop and everything just went down hill.

Since this video spotlight the translation of the frequency from power 99 to 98X in 1992 I think it would really be cool if somebody put another video up here showing the original lodge and transition from warm 99 WARM to power 99 WAPW back in 1986 if I recall that format launched at midnight one night in April 19 86. If I hadn’t moved out of the Atlanta area in January 19 91 I’m sure that I would’ve loved listening to 99X when it launched Yeah are used to listen to the previous incarnation of Power 99 as well when I was there . If anybody at the radio station Reads this and. Has an old air check Of the launch of power 99 in 1986 that would really be appreciated to see on UA-cam as well

It must have been a shocker for many when this station switched from top 40 pop to all Alternative in a market that had no history of Alt radio.

I grew up listening to this station back when they were power 99 WAPW in the late 80s and early 90s and before that Z 93 WZGC . During the mid 80s I lived out of the country for two years in Canada and then moved back to Georgia When I was in high school with my family. I remember one Power99 started out as a rock 40 radio station in 1986 and then the following year and 87 fliped to main stream CHR. All in all the station was very conservative had one of the tightest top 40 playlist once they dropped the rock 40 format Most of the time play decent music but in the early 90s that was an error with some of the worst dance music and hip hop that ever existed, is like vanilla ice, , Milli Vanilli and technotronic, just absolutely sucked. During this time there was a National music trend of some top 40 radio station surging back to a rock 40 format and I had contacted the programming department of the old power 99 a couple times suggesting worse here’s a list in a request and he didn’t wanna do it at that time here saying “they were afraid they would scare female listeners away. that didn’t like that niche format Also saying that their ratings tested very poorly when they did it in the beginning the first time around.” That’s why I was so surprised at first when I first heard about them switching for master alternative rock in the early 90s. My first guess when I thought about a radio station switching to any type of new rocks form out whether it was alternative music or rock 40 I thought the star 94 was given make the jump instead because they were rumoring to do something like this back in the late 80s and I’m sure they would’ve become an alternative stationing the 90s if 99X had not beat them to it. At that time star 94 was a hot AC station and then he later became a top 40 station to fill the gap of the old Power99 left off once Power99 became 99X. Unfortunately I never had the enjoyment of being able to listen to 99 X As a local radio station listener because I moved out of state in the winter of 1991 and went back to Canada for a little while before finally settling in Buffalo New York but when going back to Canada one time I heard an announcement about something related to I think it was football on the local Toronto radio station and they mentioned something about power 99 in Atlanta having somebody come up there because they are friends with the people that worked at the Other radio station so I called power 99 out of the blue on the day that the format flip to 99X literally two hours after the format change apparently without having any idea that there ever was a format change At Power99 and when they answer the phone they said hello 99 X and I thought I was calling the wrong radio station, That’s how I found out they changed but when I ask them what happened and they said they didn’t really make a format change the only changed a few songs and everything was very similar to before but yet I heard them cranking lithium by Nirvana in the background which was probably a showing at the old Power99 would’ve never played before. I never did move back to Atlanta but I read a bunch of things in different places About the “new 99X Atlanta” As well as had a chance to look at a couple of their playlist of songs long before the Internet existed so it’s still gave me a good idea of what they were like. Personally though since I was living in a completely different market at that time and even a different country for a Little while, I was introduced to alternative music through a local top 40 radio station in Toronto what brand it is a.m. 640 the hog and then later the beat of Toronto. Like the original power 99 in Atlanta and he started out as a rock 40 radio station as well but instead of leaning alternative rock and play both main stream and alternative rock plus some top 40 mixes but they are much less retro based in the whole Power99 wasn’t that arrow when they were experimenting with rock 40. And they had the same terrible success rate the power 99 here they said their rating sucked and even worse they are competing with your sister station too much which was Q107 they would’ve been the equivalent of 96 rock at that time which was a big main stream rock station in Toronto and they didn’t want to compete With their sister station but when they went main stream top 40 They continue to play just as much alternative Music that way that they did when they were rock 40 they just phased out the Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and Aerosmith song to be played before in the added a lot more pop and dance music into the mix like Mariah Carey the real McCoy etc. and they also embraced an awful lot of dance oriented alternative music. After they eventually went off the air and became a talk radio station that I listen to other stations they were pure alternative stations as well as listening to main stream top 40 but both Toronto and the Buffalo area had really good alternative stations like 102.1 the edge CFNY 103.3 the edge in Buffalo the short-lived defined to 101.1 the planet which did both alternative music at hard-core dance music in different times of their era Switching formats three times over the course of a year and a half from alternative to dance and then back to alternative again. In any case so I would definitely listen to 99 ask if they were around when I live there but I’m sure I would’ve also listen to the top 40 stations at the same time either *94 which I can’t imagine listening to now if they went back to hot AC or listening to Q 99.7 down there.
