Lyrics:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
She couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just been there
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
But both girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that
Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
He couldn't quite explain it
They'd always just gone there
My best mate passed away a couple of months ago...... this was his favourite tune. First time I've had the guts to play it...... First time I've cried for him.... R.I.P David Neil Harrison. Music is so fucking cathartic.
You have no idea how hard it is to ask Alexa to play this song
Fuck Alexa! 😆
That is such a great comment!
Throw that CIA bullshit away. No one needs Jeff Bezos listening to every word they say.
Who is this Alexa anyway?

I've been humming that outro in my head for 12 years. Now it's 2024, and I FINALLY found it. Rejoice.

@@MerlynMusicman It just resonates so well to people, especially kids and teenagers, that they think don't fit in. Everyone has gone through something similar at one point.
MTV played it way too much. Now I can see that it was influenced by Pearl Jam: baritone vocals singing about mistreated kids.
No, it was because of those shitty parents that infuriate me
For me, it beckons memories of better days, reminding of whats been lost.
When this song came out I was 16, and the kids started talking about it in algebra class...and asking each other how it went.... Little did they know I had written it down, memorized it and could sing the song almost the same tone as Brad Roberts. The minute I started singing it, they all screamed. That made my day so much so that I could barely say the words... I wished the 90's were still here, the music was soo wonderfully creative, life seemed more exciting and happier than it is now. People had interests, had ideas, they had a direction, knew where they were going, and what they wanted to do.. It was way easier to find Friends and even Fall in Love. Thank You Crash Test Dummies.. Thank You Brad Roberts and Crew....😁🙏💜💜💜

This band was my savior when this song came out in 94. I was a sophomore and bullied for being different. I heard it and thought "You know, I'll wear my weirdness on my sleeve." and played it everyday as school was letting out. Still a fan of the band to this day.

It's that special, it really speaks on the human condition. The musicianship is very tasteful, I cry every time I listen to this song.
@@Matthew-qk1xi Wow 👏😃
I'm a dude born in the late 90s who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s. Much of the music I first fell in love with were made in the 90s, but obviously I didn't experience the culture of the decade and its sound; I'm just a music snob.
But I've never heard this song until I stumbled on this video by complete accident. I keep coming back to it, and it induces such a nostalgia and a sweet melancholy. There's something special about it; the relatability a lot of us share in the comments I think is a strong symptom of that.

What a lot of people's fears/insecurities are, as children, and inevitably as adults. A great song.
I think I finally get the meaning of this song. The first 2 kids in the video had supportive parents while the 3rd did not. If you pair the lyrics with the video it's about overcoming things, but understanding that some people lack the support. That boy was probably disowned for his part in that play.
Without understanding the lyrics without reading them, that's the meaning i¡ve got from the images at once. Bad parents or tutors do a big harm to children whereas society just looks aside

Last decade of organic art, now it's all scripted. And you only get in if you play by the rules. Piss.
Couldn't agree with you more. Though they stopped making music for me long ago, I still listen to "Top Forty" stations, and it's all songs by young women about how awful their ex-boyfriends are, or guys wailing about how they will die if a certain girl breaks up with them. @@larryfishbone4163

No idea why, but this song just came back to me and now I've been listening to it over & over. It gives me this powerful feeling of acceptance, especially being a father, because you never know quite what someone is going through. We're all battling through life one day at a time.
Right on
I don't know any other song that quite catches this mood. Not neccessarily pity for bullying, but having a secret shame that children dont know how to deal with even if their peers are accepting.

Those songs were often lighter then what they likes the first time we heard them. I think it's the magic of this decade (maybe also the 80'). Deep lyrics with light melody.

The chord changes alone make this a masterpiece
Finally some one who recognises great music
Tell me about it. What a chord progression
It's one of those songs that seems easy to play, but it's not. I'll keep trying on the keyboard she got me
So true. The greatest era of music.
@@angelawilliams4239 the greatest era was the 80s. This is what was left of it.
To me this is a masterpiece. My reading: young people feeling insecure (1) something unexpectedly hurt their image and self worth (2) something they were born with hurt their image and self worth, so they deflect by hurting the image and self worth of (3) a person who believes differently than the herd. This is a poignant and good song.
To me it plays out like little kids telling each other stories and spreading rumors. At least that's what I got out of it from how it's worded. When we were little, there were always these weird and often times overly exaggerated stories that would circulate on the playground.
Some good points there!
The kid in the church awkwardly dancing while looking at his parents reminds me so much of me at that age 😂

This isn’t just a hit pop song. It’s an orchestral movement. Listen to the ethereal background vocals how they flow into eternity against the curtain of changing chords.
Such a simple yet profound lesson - everyone is different, everyone unique, every life sacred. At least that's the lyrical side, which pales in comparison to the music. This song is ALL about the music. Masterpiece!
As a 13 year old when this song came out I just completely dismissed it. Now 42 I've realized it's such a timeless classic and takes me back to my early high school days.
You are latest born generation X like me, I'm 41 and then 42 on autumn 🍂 equinox September this year 2022. So i guess i was 13 or 14 when that song was released.
But what does the song mean???
I was 13 also when this came out. We are same age very sentimental from 8th grade
same here 😊👍
About to turn 41 this year myself. I go back to this song and others from back then and remember staying up all night over Christmas break listening to whatever came on MTV.
This song is better than most realize
Not really homie horror song
Wholeheartedly agree 👍
Steven's excellent taste brought me here.
Back in '94 I had a neighbor from the US. We used to hang out together. I saw this band at Ruisrock then.
After 30 years I contacted him, just to discover what the expression of "peaches and coconuts" was all about. Lesson learned.
No one knows our hearts better than certain songs.
Well said! ❤️
C'est mignon !

Wow, what a thing to say!!! I want to remember that, thank you!!!! X

Some Songs just makes me teary eyed without even trying.
This takes me way back to the early 90's
I remember when I first heard this song and it's timeless production
Despite the lyrics not being complex, it's still a very beautiful song.
it just takes me back to the good old days when I was young and happy.
when Playing 16 bit games on an NTSC Tv set felt like the best thing in the world.
Love from Nigeria.
the recording engineer on this song knew wtf they were doing. so crisp and spatial
Hmmm. I dunno. Well, at least I have another reason to listen fifty more times.
Yeah, this song came out before the "loudness war" was in full swing. Music had dynamic range before that happened, lol
Had this on cassette as a kid and couldn’t get enough of the chorus. It’s so simple but that Bass hum is so soothing/catch.
It's pretty crazy how every person feels this song in absolutely different way in its life. Wish your memories will be only the best during listening this song, just as me.
My only regret while watching this video is I could of meet the drummer, but was having an extremely lazy day. Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.
I heard somewhere that the singer thought people wouldn't like his voice because it was too deep. He's absolutely awesome!
I love the deep"mmm mmm mmm mmm"
@@ghostemane6317 This song made it cool to sing in the bass register, if only for a short while.
My husband is 7 1/2 years younger than me and had never heard this song until just the other day when I played it for him and the first thing he said was "wow that guy has an amazing voice!" Thank you, Crash Test Dummies!! Beautifully done!! Damn I miss the 90s!!!!
Absolutely Love his voice!
Well he was wrong people love it and that’s why this song became a hit.
A tad, Lloyd?! A tad?! You drove 1/6 of the way across the country in the WRONG...DIRECTION!!!
Thanks bro I needed the laugh. You have a great day !!!
@@bodhisattva_1 Haha sure thing man. You have a good day as well!
Well it's not gonna do us any good to sit here whining about it, we're in a hole, we're just gonna have to dig ourselves out!
That John Denver guy was full of shit....
@texasgent4694 as a kid I always thought the idea of digging yourself out of a hole was just another dumb thing Lloyd said but actually... literally and figuratively that's how you do it. Hits different between 10 and 36 year old me.
Oh my gosh i have loved this song since the first time i heard it. thank you CRASHTESTDUMMIES and god bless y'all too for this gift.
I feel like crying every time I listen to this song. Beautiful memories and sad memories at the same time. I miss so many things but they will never return to me.
I know that feeling. Nostalgia is such sweet sorrow💔
Miss something it's learning so i hope you can now go forward and enjoy life every day 🥳🥳🥳🥳👍💪✊✌
Music is like a Dolorean 😎
Keep the faith. They will return . Also they never left
Wonderfully said
Totally agree. Thankfully we have this time machine known as UA-cam.
God this music era is something beyond
You're correct in your observation. By the early 90's the music industry was desperate for new sounds, so they were willing to give a broader range of acts a chance at success. It was a wonderful time to be a teenager; so many various musical acts. I'm not sure it will ever happen again... industry has changed.
@@phukuhu7310 Después del invierno nuclear las industrias van a desaparecer, pero los clásicos de la música seguramente serán protegidos como oro.Esta canción merece ser valorada
In the Summer of 1995, I listened to Crash Test Dummies' "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" while driving a 1980 Pontiac Firebird Turbo Trans Am to the 99W Drive-in Theater in Newberg, Oregon, showing a double feature that includes director Brett Leonard's 1995 movie Virtuosity starring Denzel Washington and Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. Awesome song from the 90's! 😊
Nobody knows this song unless you were a fashionised kid of the early 90s grunge maybe lol wow brings back memories to say the least!
This is one of those very unique songs. Very few exist.
I had 6 years old in 1993. This and 74 /75 from The Connells. Both Gave me a lot of beautiful memories
There are many, many unique songs. It's just a matter of taking the time to find them.
Canadians have a LOT of awesome, unique music!
Orinoco Flow also in that playlist. Top-tier unique.

The song actually has a deeper meaning about child abuse. The chorus almost mocks people's inability to recognize that the kids in question make up excuses to cover the abuse. Like when someone is obviously lying and you respond with "hmmm mmm sure."
Listen pearl jam "jeremy"
This is interesting and would be neat but he explains where the "mmm" came from in an interview.
"... birthmarks all over her body. She couldn't quite explain it..."
Hugh Jass how did you figure that out ? It all makes sense now
Except he's said he didn't have words for the chorus and was using the mmm's as place holder for lyrics and they decided to just leave it.
Bless 90s and 80s!!💖 Bless all this fantastic music was born during this period! I always want to cry river how much i miss this time 😢
Me too
This has become one of my favourite songs to drum to. Sooooo much emotion.
The moment when you find a forgotten song from your childhood... pure bliss
your real bright and all kinds ofshiny, oooooo your very curious
Your post sums it up for me....
Absolutely!
I’ve just done same pure bliss!
This just randomly popped into my head. Loved it as a kid.
Can we talk about how insanely underrated this group is
AMEN! 😎👍❤️🙏
mmmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm....mmm mmmmm mmmm mmmmm
How so? I don't hear any instrumental virtuosity, and the singer guy sounds like a jerk, and sings lyrics about nothingness.
@@hugejohnson5011Thanks for posting. Nice objection. Responsible trolling. But, this song is the the shit! Don't make me prove it. I'll be succinct, and own you!!!!!! Cheers. :)
@@davidjoseph3403 "Own me"? Dude, it's not a competitive event. I simply don't care for the song, and can't stand this guy's vocal style, that's all. Nothing deeper to it. It showed up one day in my feed, and until that moment, I had not known any of the CTDs' music. I gave a listen and don't like it. I was aware that they had been popular at one time, but I don't seek out that type of music.
Miss my college friends !! When we listen to this together
Nádhera i po tolika letech ❤❤❤Děkuji
I've always enjoyed the uniqueness of Brad's voice and the entire group's sound!
A perfect song about childhood and outsiders. Accident = external force that defines you, Birthmark= our inherited physical being, Church= inherited family culture. Much like many things in childhood, we are defined by things we cannot control and those things can make us outsiders. To those that are saying this is a "dumb" song, take the mmm mmm moements to be reflective and learn to look for meaning in art rather than expecting the lyrics or characters tell you want it means.
Very well said!
The "Mmm, Mmm" is ignorance and ignoring. The band is from Winnipeg and I grew up there (when this song came out even), this song basically defines what it is like to grow up there. I was an outsider, which made my childhood difficult and I couldn't even form friendships.
Personally I interpret this song to be about trauma, rather than alienation.
First kid's hair goes white after his car crash, reminiscent of an adult's hair going grey faster when highly stressed. Given the rest of the song's explicit depictions of child abuse, it's possible the crash itself was a lie fabricated to hide a particularly hard beating or an attempt of the parents to be rid of him.
Second kid refuses to get changed with the rest of the girls because she doesn't want them to see her "birth marks". She "couldn't quite explain it" because she's lying. The marks are either bruises, burns, or big scars.
Third kid has it worst because he suffers the worst kind of trauma a child can experience: The deprivation of a childhood in the first place. He couldn't quite explain it because he's too young to understand what's actually happening and just goes along with what he's told. He hesitates so much in the video because he does have some idea of the perverse nature of his predicament.
"mmm" is an agreement. It's sarcastic delivery, placement and the facial expression associated is another nod towards the deeper meaning. The chorus always starts after the child attempts to justify their trauma.
The video really makes this more obvious:
First kid's parents are hesitant to see their child re-enacting the crash, but are happy to see he seems to be handling it well. Second kid's parents don't show because only someone who didn't care about their child could hurt her so badly. Also, the purple birth marks support the bruise theory more. Third kid's parents hate that the kid is even part of the play. Despite their disgusting mistreatment of him, they still show because those acts are the result of good intentions. Final thing with the video is how the three suffering kids are the only ones shown bowing, which they do several times. They do this because they're putting on a show of being okay.
Ofc it's just an interpretation, but I'm pretty sure this is the original intention.
@@alihasanaxe4936 I don’t see how you get any abuse from the third verse. The lyrics make it clear that it’s a sort of mental conditioning/brainwashing, which is why they “shook and lurched” all over the church floor in a display of the “Holy Spirit”. There’s really nothing in the third verse to suggest abuse, at all, except for the child being deprived of extracurricular activities outside of church.
@@coryaw95 That _is_ the abuse.
1994. I was doing my exams to finish secondry school. Probably the only time in my life I was happy. This song reminds me of friends, team mates, fun times. All that stopped once I finished education. I just wish I could go back to speak to my younger self of 1994. .... Great voice great song
I was 16 when this song came out...and what i feel is pure nostalgia...it carries the smell of 90's with it..
Reading how much this song means to so many people make me feel less alone
I was a kid when my grandma died and i heard this song for the first time, and the last. The pain was unbearable, and this song to me tasted like pain, grief, tears, broken heart. Never had the courage to listen to it anymore, till today. After 22 years. Cause I'm afraid my husband is sick and that I'm gonna lose him too. In the meantime, 4 years ago, I've lost my mum. No, I'm not ready, I'm scared, maybe it's something that can be cured, but what if? I don't know what brought me here after so many years, but here i am, facing the most traumatic loss i had as a kid, the pain of being bullied my entire life, my mom's death...
Maybe this song is trying to tell me that this pain will not be in vain...i must believe that I'm struggling now to be happy in the end.
🙏🙏🙏
I'me experiencing the same right now, in 2024 with my cat who got hit by a car last week. This song, especially the end will now forever be directly connected to him. 💔
