I’m not sure if you will see this since this is four years old but i just found your channel a few months ago and I’ve watched every video you post then i found these old ones. It’s funny to see how far you have come and how confident you are now with the choices you have made. I’m living through you two, I’m 62 years old and I wish i would have had the guts to do what you have done. Oh and even back then to now you can see the love and respect you have for each other, you were meant to be. Thanks for sharing your life.
I've been watching y'all for almost 2 years, but this is the first I have watched this video. I absolutely love your story, and your points about time being valuable. Stop talking about it and just do it, is a fantastic phrase.
The American dream.....own a house and work until you’re 65. Retire and.....begin to live finally? I think that dream is changing for a lot of people now. Why not live every day all the time instead of waiting 50 years!
I enjoy what I do, i am 64 and want to continue doing it as long as possible. I really think I live every day and have achieved all the material goods I need.
@@charles-y2z6c Same here. I think the real "American dream" is to pursue a life of doing something you enjoy and having sufficient financial resources to meet your needs. The problem today seems to be that people think they "need" a whole bunch of garbage and they work in jobs/careers that they don't enjoy just to pay for it.
@@benbub123 Exactly, if your dream is to live in remote Alaska off the grid, enjoy it. If your dream is to dig holes, dig the most perfect ones you can with the best shovel you can get, build a mansion on one and be happy that you are doing your dream.

@@drozone3658 best of luck to you too! Check out the Berkeley Spring WV area. How fortunate that you decided this at great time in your life! Did you get started yet? My husband and I “decided” to homestead in our 50s and we had 6 kids at home. As they got older and left, we got older and had less help. And we needed our “day jobs” to pay for everything. Our house is too big and needs upkeep. It takes 5 hours to now then grass here…! Now we’re down to 1 teen at home and so basically it’s all on the two of us. We only have chickens and didn’t even fins garden this year. I hope to downsize and go back to simple living and semi-homesteading to grow and raise more of our own food. But being in our 60s, I’m not hopeful that it will happen.
I am 28 and feel the same way as you all do about time going fast. I have a wife and 3 children and didn’t see them much. I decided to start my own lawn care and landscaping business and I’m very glad I did. I make my schedule and make more money at the same time. And I get to see my family more. People definitely shouldn’t let fear keep them from taking a step in a different direction. It can be the best decision of your life if you approach it right and work hard, as these two do. Thanks for the videos and God bless. Congratulations on the new life.
My husband and I have a house in the Bay Area that we are planning to sell. We both want to be debt free without conventional jobs too. I think what you two are doing is fantastic and I’ve been enjoying your channel. Keep livin’ the dream!
I did the same thing but I didn't get the nerve until 55 but I love it. I'm literally selling everything that is not necessary and moving to the country period.

So inspiring for many for sure. I stayed in Guatemala 3.5 yrs ago when I came for vacation. I'm retired/disabled and was not able to live a self sustained life in USA. I found I could rent a nice apt, eat local produce and still have the ability to socialize and take a variety of classes and workshops to expand my healing and spiritual growth. I applaud your decisions and your drive to thrive on your own terms. I've worked at my own business for nearly 30 years; countless weeks working 100 hours. Now at this stage in my life I just work to have health care, which is more a month than my mortgage. Having cancer has reminded me that life is so short and you should live the way you want to live. So if you don't mind, I will live vicariously through you two.
I loved living in Alaska. Now that I can't see well enough to drive, I stay in the lower 48. I love how you both get the spirit of the place and honor it. Blessings to all you touch.
I’ve been watching your videos for a week or so and realize that type of move requires a special relationship and commitment. It’s also filled with hard work continuously. Being from Napa and now in Texas I have thought many of times moving to Alaska but only made it to the realtor stage. You have shown me so much. Thank you and will follow your adventure.
Definitely. As someone who lives alone and has no desire for marriage, it's an easier choice for me because the decision is all on my shoulders - no one else's. When there's a partner involved, you both have to be "all-in" on this kind of move.
We drove to Anchorage from central BC (in three days) in summer of 2005 to visit friends who now live on Big Lake near Willow. Alaska has got to be the most beautiful place I've ever seen, and Anchorage is a great not so big city that seems to pop up after driving through what looks like a moose refuge for days and days. We look forward to getting back up there in the next year or two with the camper.
So my wife and I are in our 50's, and we just moved last November 2018 to the Yukon from Ontario to do the exact same thing. You are wise beyond your years, doing thins while you are young and healthy. Great channel and content! Keep up the hard but great work.
You guys are such a sweet couple and it says a lot about your commitment to each other as homesteading is a 24/7 lifestyle to sustain even a daily, minimal life. I'm sure a lot more difficult and exhausting than the videos even show, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and stressfulon a marriage. Best wishes for a continued successful and happy journey together!
Anchorage is so beautiful, and really large. I thought it was more like a small city. The Christmas lights and snow makes it look like a fairytale. You two young soul's are just really so sensible. What you have achieved I Salute you both. By the way you both now look in your early 20s. Thank you so much for sharing this information. Typical me, watching this now when it should have been a few years ago doh. Kindest thoughts from Australia xx

I'm an old man also 87and have done the same as Jonathan and like to watch you do your own thing. Don't know you personally but love watching you do your thing. Great to go to the city and have fun.
Even tho I lived on the edge of town, on just a normal size lot with a modest 3 bdrm, 2 bath house.... I still had a large garden out back, veggies as well as herbs and several varieties of fruit trees. I canned/ dehydrated/ froze, etc... I made everything from scratch. I had chickens, bee hives, a couple horses, lots of dogs and cats.....and raised 4 kids who were comfortable digging in the dirt out back or off traveling the globe, sometimes by themselves at age 16+....all worked and paid their way through college, getting their master degrees......they are all very “earth conscious” and after watching them flourish in city life... they are all now in their 30’s and are moving towards selling their homes, etc. to do similar to what you two have done. This is where all those childhood skills I taught them will come in handy! 😂 (Makes a mother proud) 😊❤️ In my younger adult days... it was not normal to do all this......and “some” people thought I was “odd”.... I always had a full pantry even stocking up on things like toilet paper, flour, sugar, etc..... (but come COVID time, and with the shortage of food... guess who had plenty and was able to help feed the homeless from my pantry) 😂 NOW... several of those people want me to teach them how to preserve food. 😂😂
You guys are so smart to do what you've done... specially at such a young age. And you shouldn't feel guilty about still doing some of the things you enjoy from your old life. I just really enjoy watching your videos and I envy you both. Thanks for sharing your life...
You guys are naturals at this! I would’ve thought you both grew up in the bush! I admire your lifestyle and we are working towards a simple life also! Praying for continued blessings for you both ♥️♥️
When I was growing up my mom would load us into the car and drive around Anchorage looking at houses, especially the Christmas lights. Also a great way to learn a town and how to get around in it.
Ok..I just love that you bought your coffee at McDonalds instead of Starbucks. You saved about $10 but doing it that way. Speak volumes about how practical you you both are.
Best move you two made, more people need to simplify their lives, and possessions. Just imagine how much better the environment worldwide would be. I live in Australia and the beaches here get hammered by plastic crap, and general rubbish, from fishing boats etc, lots wash up even on little islands way out on the Great Barrier Reef, mainly washed up from Indonesia, it's very sad, our Great reef isn't so great at the moment. We all worldwide need to do our part in changing the way we live, I clean rubbish every time I go to the beach, and I fully respect good people like yourselves. It's a start I guess to undoing our failures and mistakes on our beautiful planet, you just have to look at gorgeous footage of awesome places in the world, like your amazing cinematography that you guys do, it allows others to experience the beauty of the world. Cheers mateys.
I love hearing how you came to this point and figured out what you really were passionate about...I have been thinking more and more about making my life simpler...back to my childhood days which is why I think I have been so drawn to what you are now doing in Alaska. We had goats, chickens, etc. and a huge garden, lots of fruit trees and preserving food, etc. I couldn't have asked for a happier childhood! You two are both amazing!
Your together, nothing else matters. If you’re happy good for you. Enjoy your time together it goes by way to fast. You kids are great together. Love the video’s.

Hello. You got to make the most of your life's. I'm 66 and iv lived in the same Valley all my life and never regretted it. Ho and worked in the same Valley. You could say I love it, and still do. When I go hunting it's down to the local shop to buy a cooked Chicken.
Getting rid of that mortgage is key. We're doing the same. We got rid of the bills we could and saved one of our incomes for a year then bought 14 acres of forest in Michigan for 2k an acre in 18'. Spent a few months buying materials to build our cabin, shed, outhouse and well house. Went to part time at work in April and started building, we can now live here fairly comfortable. Your first year garden blows ours away!
We worked for one of the biggest Cruise lines , i am from Bulgaria my husband from Trinidad and Tobago . We retired in 2017 when i was 37 and he was 43 . We live in Trinidad and Tobago , debt free , the only bills we pay are WIFI , electricity and water . The car is fully paid for , the house too , no stress at all . We have a small TAXI buisness , plus a little land that we plant . You gus did the right thing
I have been watching your gardening videos for a long time, one of your recent videos you meantioned that when you lived in Oregon ..., I live in portland OR, I went through all your videos to your earliest video. Found this video, interesting to hear the reason why you moved to Alaska. You both made such a good team work, really like your videos on gardening canning... best wishes to you.
I watched a couple of your resent vids and decided to watch them all from the beginning and really enjoying them. With this vid I keep saying oh me too just different directions. Odd we ended up sharing allot of same experiences in life but went different directions and I just happened onto this channel. Thank you guys for the reminder its a small world after all.
I agree wholeheartedly with realizing your brave decision.I admire your courage and for sure were I young again I follow your example. Your example, I hope, will encourage others. I’m lucky, I visited Anchorage two years ago and I enjoyed and found Alaska very beautiful. Love to visit again, but this I fear will remain another of my dreams... keep save my brave and lovely children. Love you both.
I always wondered how old you are. Caught that. You're doing a wonderful thing. I love following your channel. I hang out with you about every day. Love the Alaska outdoors, love you guys, love that you teach me something every video. Take care
The difference is you don't go through McDonald's drive through or Starbucks every single morning or lunch or both like alot of people do. Nothing wrong with a treat when you have to go to town. Do you have a q&a video or do you plan on making one? Like if you plan on staying in Alaska long term? Or plan on having kids? Or having more farm animals?
Kudos to you guys. All the best. My partner and I worked our asses off in the corporate world but were able to retire at 55 with full pensions....loving the first of every month and everyday is a Friday. Living a great life in a great city....anything we want...and the best health care around. We do get old eventually. Keep on enjoying it.

My son was stationed there he loved every bite of it he was in the Coast Guard for two yrs . He Patrolled the icy waters at night finding the Fisherman that over loaded there boats and they would start sinking the waters were so frigid he said that he felt like his face was going to fall off ! Despite that he said he loved it there ❤️❤️🙏
I have to say I have watched other channels with couples living in Alaska, and I love your the best. You both are authentic, really work hard and live off the land unlike others that proclaim they do but not so much. I would not eat some of the stuff you slaughter and cook LOL but heck I guess we are all spoiled when we can go to a large store to purchase our meats etc. Thank you ..for being you

Me, my husband and my mom moved to Anchorage June 2007 until July 2009. Never had issues with my allergies, air super clean and water too. Very simple life but everything is so expensive. Had goods jobs worked with the Mayor’s office, Chugach Alaska, ASRC Oilfield Company then with UMIAQ. We drove 7 and 1/2 days from Jacksonville, FL to Anchorage, AK...it was a very good experience. Pictures cannot do justice on how pretty Alaska is.🤗🤗🤗

I felt the same way..working 60+ hours a week in an office, at a computer..I just saw my boss being 60 years old and making lots of money being an engineer but doing nothing to enjoy all his hard work.. bought a home in the blue ridge mountains for cash.. moved from Florida. Within a few months of time. Now I work remotely but also enjoy life.. I also love my job with my engineering firm but I also wanted to experience the world and explore . Life is short. Explore your world.

Wow... glad I found this video... my husband and I are about 3/5 years older than you two and also from the Bay Area... we didn’t want to pay the ridiculous prices so we moved to Washington and now only one of us needs to work... we still daydream of going further though, getting some land and being off grid/homesteaders.

😂 (Makes a mother proud) 😊❤️
In my younger adult days... it was not normal to do all this......and “some” people thought I was “odd”.... I always had a full pantry even stocking up on things like toilet paper, flour, sugar, etc..... (but come COVID time, and with the shortage of food... guess who had plenty and was able to help feed the homeless from my pantry) 😂
NOW... several of those people want me to teach them how to preserve food.
I still dont know why ppl would spend more than 5 bucks for a cup of coffee including waiting and spending their time in line.
I’m so glad I came back to watch the earlier videos. I learned a lot about you both 👏👏👏
At 10:00, the lucky wishbone is where me and my family from anchorage always went in the summer time when I visited. Their milkshakes are so good!
Alaska has been on my Bucket List for so long.. This just make me want to go that much more.. Thank you for the tour of Anchorage..
Thanks for sharing your stories. You are inspirational. Live small, love big. Debt free isn't free. It's independence. Stay strong.
John Armstrong, thank you!
Good for you - Live your life your way, be safe, be happy and take care of each other.
You are both amazing. Hands down this is the best UA-cam channel I have ever come across. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Your together, nothing else matters. If you’re happy good for you. Enjoy your time together it goes by way to fast. You kids are great together. Love the video’s.
Whatever you do now, feeds your spirit and soul. It's so nice to be young and living the life that you never knew could be so freeing and amazing.
I am so happy for you. Congrats
I suppose having kiddos is outta question at this point ... right?! That thing alone completely changes your life in every possible way.
I have so much respect for you two...living your dreams! You're work ethic is amazing and I love all of your videos! They clearly show you two are a team that love and respect nature in all it's glory! BTW...love the new boat !!!
I love to look back at the first videos. You both have come so far. You are wise to know that time flies by, redeem the time. Make the most of what God gives you.
Hello. You got to make the most of your life's. I'm 66 and iv lived in the same Valley all my life and never regretted it. Ho and worked in the same Valley. You could say I love it, and still do. When I go hunting it's down to the local shop to buy a cooked Chicken.
I just adore this young couple...your videos make me so happy! Ariel is a doll and Eric is a cutie as well😌.
Terry that sounds like an awesome set up, we agree we weren't content with having the mortgage. Glad to hear you made it happen 😀
You’re both wise beyond your years. Personally I think you are at precisely at the best age to start this.
I was wondering. Thank you for the story. love watching by guys!
I watched a couple of your resent vids and decided to watch them all from the beginning and really enjoying them. With this vid I keep saying oh me too just different directions. I grew up in Alaska, moved down to Bay Area, vacation in Oregon. Its Oregon that we would like to retire to.
I love this story ..I have followed you guys for maybe 12 months .. but it’s awesome to get the back story
I always wondered how old you are. Caught that. You're doing a wonderful thing. I love following your channel. I hang out with you about every day. Love the Alaska outdoors, love you guys, love that you teach me something every video. Take care
Very interesting. My mother worked at that JCPenney's in the 1970s. I had a picture taken with the Easter Bunny there when I was a kid.
You doing..the right thing...and you are still kids.....love your videos.
I'm glad you changed it when you said you don't work cause I watch your videos and you both work VRY HARD EVERY DAY friends!!!
I wish I had understood what you know now at your age. I'm 42 and just recently started to value my time. Loved this talk.

You guys are fantastic love your channel
It's a bonus that you are great vloggers and are able to (I assume) monetize this channel. With 400K+ subs I'd imagine it's a very nice subsidy. Good for you - I think it's great. Love your channel
Loved the Christmas decoration in the city, the snow makes it more festive ...
I know this video is 2 yrs old but I’m watching it again. If you are comfortable discussing it how do you keep money coming in to buy supplies, gas, etc
I love that it took you a while to remember the term “rush hour.”
My husband and I are hoping to take the same route you two have taken. Our current situation is a little different, but we're determined to make it happen! You guys are inspiring me even more!!
May you both stay Blessed and lol warm!!!
you aren't different you just appreciate your time
I love how you walk the walk....great job following your dreams of freedom!
Thank you ..for being you
Great job. I love the trees at the airport in the winter.
Good on you guys,my girl and yours truly bailed out 45 years ago and it was the best decision we ever made. You have to get off the Wheel, only got one life so make the most of it. Time flys when you are having fun
Pictures cannot do justice on how pretty Alaska is.🤗🤗🤗
Appreciate that you include the canines in your travels.
Thankyou both for sharing this so many years ago- I have just seen it. Boy you are both on the money- wasting your life & I agree with everything Jonathan B has said below. One day you are 50 & next minute you are 70. Cheers Denise- Australia
We love this concept. We have now entered our fifties. Our hang up is medical insurance. What do you do for that? That's the missing piece of our puzzle. Paying for health insurance.
Monthly bills. Phone me too. Debut free is such a great feeling.. you two seem so content and happy. Great talk... You put your selfs in a great position to have a long wonderful life. Have a great night you two..!!
Living totally off grid is not for me but I do admire those that make it work for themselves. Good luck.
Ariel: “Two months later we were driving across Canada to come to Alaska!”
Me, using 1/2 hour to get my children to put their shoes on. That’s just their shoes. Not counting the rest of their clothes: 😠😩😒😢
My gosh the lights on the trees covered with snow is spectacular.
I been ther to... and like to Anchorage!!... so simple!
What an awesome back story, I enjoyed this. I'm really impressed with y'all, so young yet so versed. I think Alaska was a great fit. Enjoy and keep on keeping on.
We have always been kind of weird and different...and with our sense of adventure Alaska has been awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
✌😀✌
What a BEAUTIFUL place!
Thanks for sharing your story and motivation for living a simplier life ❤
You two are really impressive with your work ethic and making it happen. Good for you. Yes, Anchorage is beautiful and the water was amazing when I was last there many years ago. Stay safe.
You both have the right idea for sure! Your video content is great, keep it up!!
Good for you both, I’m 55 and retired 5 years ago.
Loved the video! I loved seeing you talk about your background and also the reasons why you picked this lifestyle! Also again loved the road trip vibes! Love going places with you two 😁
10:40 She gave 0 reaction to the BMW joke .....lmfao
Big_A, I thought my lack of a reaction was pretty funny, Eric is always saying stuff like that :)
@@SimpleLivingAlaskaI was laughing for like 5 min ... lol
Yea too funny 😂
with blizzaks, bmw 335xi or 340i x drive are perfect alaska winter cars.
Every time I hear the crunch of frost underfoot it gives me the chills. But it is nowhere near that cold here in the winter than it was when I was a kid 60 years ago. No where near the snow either. We live near Toronto, Canada.
You are sooooo right... and courageous to do so!!! you have to follow your path!!
Those lights at the end are so beautiful!! Love y'alls take on living!
"You can sit around and talk about it all you want or you can just do it right away." I'm so all about you guys!!
Wow... glad I found this video... my husband and I are about 3/5 years older than you two and also from the Bay Area... we didn’t want to pay the ridiculous prices so we moved to Washington and now only one of us needs to work... we still daydream of going further though, getting some land and being off grid/homesteaders.
You are an inspiration and I wish I had known someone like you when I was young. Following the traditional norms is good to a point --- but --- sometimes you wonder what could have been. Have said to my hubby of 45 yrs - let's move to Alaska -- and he has always said ok ,but not now, later. Still stuck here in the bay area and now it's 400 times worse. God Bless you and keep your dream alive and well.
You guys are an inspiration:-)
Brave, hard working and pragmatic
Loving your channel! I'm from Tracy CA, I've also lived in Soldotna AK (near Kenai) and I've been residing in Brisbane Australia for the last 12yrs, life takes you crazy places and in the blink of an eye too! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Stay wild :P
