  • Baldur's Gate 3 Rogue vs Ranger - Which BG3 Class Should You Play?
In this Baldur's Gate 3 video, I will be taking a look at the Ranger and Rogue classes and doing a direct comparison to them, this is the first video in a series of videos before launch where we go through different classes, usually two or three classes, and compare them. Helping narrow down for players what class they might want to play.

Have you found any heavy armor in act 1?
One of the advantages of heavy armor proficiency is that you can dump dex, but that is of course not possible, if you need to play 50 hours with medium armor first...
How much of an advantage heavy armor proficiency is for rangers strongly depends on when you find your first decent set

      True.
Pick Folk Hero or Outlander background and Bounty Hunter and Urban Tracker and you can select sleight of hand as one of your skills as Ranger while people without I think Bounty Hunter can't and you will have 8 skills with proficiency that way and proficiency with the disguise kits and thieves' tools and Thieves' Cant passive making you be the team Ranger and Rogue in one.
Now you can put Astarion and Shadowheart on bench and play with other companions.

That Wood Elf pick is hyper optimized, giving you the single greatest amount of level1 proficiencies possible paired with Ranger level 1 picks and a carefully selected Background.

From playing around in the EA it seems that rogues really shine in regards to the action economy, even more than in tabletop 5E. Not only is mobility one of the most important aspects of combat (bonus action dash is huge) but there's a lot of items that grant quite strong bonus effects on dashing. A lightning charge thief build is absurdly strong in the EA and once multiclassing becomes an option it could easily become absurd.

As the game gets closer to launch, you'll probably have to start segregating these videos into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level guides. There's a lot of information in DnD, and it might help people who are coming to the channel know where to start looking.

And OH MY, was I happy with having one in my party! I specced him into archery and I'd take him over Astarion any day. The sheer precision and reliability of the class (especially once he gets double attack) plus the extra benefit of utility spells makes him a perfect low maintenance turret I can always rely on. On the other hand, rogues are great, but they're kind of forced into melee to make use of all their actions, which means you also end up with them getting wailed on by the baddies

Do not sleep on the Thief Rogue. I just finished an *essentially solo Early Access run using my Thief, and having 2 bonus actions makes for amazing stealth and dash opportunities. I could easily maneuver to enemy blind spots to sneak attack them and stealth back into the shadows. You don’t need a high amount of HP or heavy armor if you never get hit!
And if I did get into a tight spot, I could dash 3 times in a single round to gain distance and reset a fight. Even just having a second opportunity to stealth if the first attempt failed was huge!
Strongly considering a Thief for my Dark Urge play through just because of how solo capable it felt.
    * I say “essentially solo” above as the only companion I kept around for my EA run was Gale, and that’s just so I could park him in front of a vendor and instantly send loot to him to sell while my Thief kept murdering.

Its a great concept for a video, since whenever deciding its often that I'm thinking about 2-3 classes, as opposed to broadly researching.
One thing that I think could have been nice to hear more about is how the class interacts with skills. One of the big reasons I've liked Ranger is that it can be quite good at skills I enjoy being proficient in for my main character (Insight, perception, Nature, survival, medicine).
Rogue on the otherhand has more versatility (and of course expertise) in terms of how it can specialise with skills - but isnt as naturally inclined to go for wisdom skills. I think this is kind of what made me lean more towards Ranger in the end.

The advantage with stealth for rangers is only significant if you don't have Shadowheart in your party though. Cause if she's in, your rogue will be nearly invisible with all the bonuses she brings to stealth.

    Long-term 5e user here. Def going 5 Gloomstalker/5 assassin/2 trickery domain. Stealth God incoming💪🏻
The damage out put of hunters mark, extra attack long bow, gloomstalker initial bonus, assassin, and sneak attack is insane.
Adding two levels of trickery domain can always allow advantage on stealth, and a little charisma flare for duplicity. If you're considering the infiltrator roll in your group, try this multiclass out.

Very helpful content. I didn't realize pure rogues are restricted to a single attack regardless of lvl if not dual wielding. Fifth edition I'm not particularly knowledgeable regarding. I was originally not going to multiclass and just go with pure rogue first playthrough but will reconsider carefully that approach. The multiclass ideas you gave were interesting and mechanics explanations communicated well. Your channel and time so do as you please, but just in response to your request for feedback on themes for future videos; perhaps one could be a comparison of the mechanics, effectiveness, and potential multiclassings of the melee combat focused classes (barbarian, monk, paladin, & fighter) if you haven't already made one, in a similar format to this video. 11 days to go approx til full release at time of posting, am so hyped.

Thanks for the video. Very good blend of hinting at multi-classing without going into a class build/guide. A very even balance of sub-arche types presentation without emphasizing one over the other. I felt a slight bias for the Ranger than the Rogue. Not a judgement on my part, just an observation. Could be a bias on my part as I do favor the Ranger. To steal from White Men Can't Jump, I listen to the Rogue but I hear the Ranger. Length was good. What I felt missing was some discussion on late game build differences. I know a lot of PCs will multi-class but maybe just a couple words of what a full build difference would present.

Hmm.I always try to play either Rogue or Ranger so the idea is to multiclass at least one of them. Rogue Thief/Ranger Beastmaster with heavy armor proficiency and dual wielding seems weirdly appealing to me. Or maybe Rogue Thief/Bard College of swords for my sneaky support and charm main character. Another idea is Ranger Beastmaster/Druid Wild shape to embrace my wild nature? Will probably restart the act 1 a couple times untill I decide what feels best for me.

One thing I usually take into account is what I want my party to be, and what classes aren't already taken by other party members. Between these two Ranger isn't taken by a companion and Gloom Stalker is a really strong subclass so that would be my pick between these two. There are some mods already that add the Swashbuckler subclass to Rogues which makes getting sneak attack much easier and has some good flavor for a Face. I'm going to play a Bard or Paladin for sure though, or maybe a multiclass of the two. Having a strong support character really makes things go smoother.

Im curious to see if the Tepest cleric's 6th lvl ability that lets them push a large or smaller creature any time they deal lighting damage works in BG3. This might've convinced me to play Gloomstalker/Assassin multiclass. Specifically 8 Gloomstalker/4 Assassin: after hitting lvl 5 Gloomstalker to get Extra Attack and lvl 2 spells (most notably Pass Without Trace), get your 4 levels of Assassin and pick up that juicy Assassinate feature as well as Expertise/Sneak Attack, then finish leveling in Gloomstalker. Since the split is 8/4 you won't miss any ASIs or Feats, you'll just get your second one slightly late. You don't get lvl 3 spells, but you do insane burst damage on 1st rounds and have a lot of firepower both in and out of stealth.
