  • We love books! We take a deep-dive (no pun intended) into the ocean-themed tutorial book by Dana Fox to see what fun we can have with this beautiful step-by-step guide to painting a myriad of sea creatures (and other things too!)

I love when you do reviews because you are very thorough! I have almost bought this book or the forest version bunches of times but was unsure about it. Thank you for taking it out for a spin. I suspect that someone didn't do color matching after printing to ensure that all of the colors looked the same in the book as they do in real life. Pretty common but kinda careless. Especially for a book for beginners!

Great video Gem! I like seeing new things. Your little guy came out cute. I do have to admit I was worried in the beginning. But you saved this little cutie! Thank you💖😍

Thank you for doing a book review. Have been interested in this book.
Book reviews open my eyes to books I don't know about in the same way product reviews do.

    Great review :D
I have all the books in this serie, and I love them. I have learned SO much from them. I dont paint in the book, but on watercolor paper on the side. Then I can do it as many times, as I need too.
I think the first one, In the Forest, is best for left handed persons, because in that book the instructions are in the right side and the image on the left.
Thank you for the review :D

I'e actually bought all of the books in this series from the time they started coming out because I was completely new to watercolor. I found it was a GREAT way to get my feet wet! So much so that I kept buying them. I've only recently gotten confident enough with my painting skills to actually paint in the books. I was just tracing them onto watercolor paper so I could have more than one try at them, lol!

This was great! There are so many drawing books that comically skip all of the important steps and go from really rough sketch to masterpiece. Id love to see more book reviews 😊

I have the forest version but I did get the online version and printed the text and transferred the images to better quality watercolour paper to prevent “bleed through“ to other pages

Loved the review super helpful for someone like me who does most (all) their shopping online so can’t assess something until I’ve bought it. Also I probably don’t have enough experience in watercolour yet to asses the paper once it arrived anyway. So yes please more review like this would be great.

Love that you did this review! Book reviews like this are super helpful. And bonus - you reminded me that I have this book! I got it in 2019, when I was just starting watercolor. It is fantastic paper for this sort of practice, and for the price. You get a really good value for the money, and your video has prompted me to get it back out. There are good techniques in it, that a relaxing to practice.

Thank you for the review. Love to see more of these. I have got the forest one. It does not have a colourchart, so I just went through the book and wrote down the colours. The pictures are also on the left hand page instead of the right.

Loved the video and your views on the book. I was given this book for Christmas and was too wary to do any of the projects. I had been stuck on transferring paint to a palette. So showing one of the exercises has made me want to get my paints out.

OMg so happy to see the painting area is on the right side…I love her Forest book but the pictures to paint are on the left and it was a bit challenging. The paper quality for watercolor is great and I even did some with gouache!

I enjoy these videos. It's super difficult for me to try to learn from a computer/ screen. I enjoy being able to flip pages and mark stuff easily. It's actually a huge problem for my son with schooling and I can see why. I have this book and her first 1 ( I can't remember the name of it right now but it's a forest or something like that. I tried the first one when I just started watercoloring. I immediately got frustrated and put the books away and haven't touched them since. This made me want to pull them out agian now that I know more about watercolor and some techniques. Have a great day

Love this content and really interested in this.. put this in my Amazon list now lol. The otter drawing is probably different cus she had to redraw it after doing the original painting. But you did great!! Guessing the editor colour shifted the book slightly. Do more on this!!

Hullo Gem! Wonderful video! I have purchased a few books to learn from over the years. Sakuems has a UA-cam channel and Etsy store! She sells the best watercolor paper books! She has drawing surfaces too! I learned most of my Art basics from books. My Gran did get me started with watercolor painting, but I wanted to add color to my own drawings and books were my only resource! At 10 years old not many classes available to me! No the computer was a sci-fi prop in stories or movies, so the internet was not even a dream when I was starting! Realizing printed books use different colors for mass printing runs so no instruction set will match real world colors or paints. I never worked inside the books, to get the best results I have found transferring the line work to another sheet of paper a must! It does seem like this book may be different supplying watercolor paper in the book? But finished works can be altered by editors! I liked your otter! I hope you do continue this as a teaching series for the Cave! Great for beginners! I have never understood how people are scared or afraid of watercolors! I still love it even after 50 years and I love finding new ways to paint with watercolors! You young lady are a true Gem, Gem! (Yep I started at 10 years old and I turned 60 last year! You never stop learning if you desire to do something better.)

Thanks for doing this review, I was looking at it and a few similar ones yesterday but the reviews were mixed (pretty much all about the paper quality) so it's really helpful to actually see the paper being painted on.

What a cutie! I suspect the colour difference will be down to printing, it's really hard to match switching from the RYB colour palette to the CYMK print one imho. Otherwise, I think it seemed like an easy to follow tutorial and I'd love to see you do more review style videos.

This video is really interesting to me! I'm sure I've had at least one of her books on my wishlist for a while, before I decided to scratch them off and just learn by doing xD but I might still get one of her books at some point, just to improve on my watercolour skills :)
I think the swatches in the book might have been done on 100% cotton paper. I noticed that using cotton paper actually does change the intensity of the colours compared to regular Cold Press watercolour paper. That would explain the difference in colours between her swatches and yours.

Also, U.S. Amazon price for this book is currently $16.29, so even here, it's a really good value. And head's up folks, about her 3rd book in this series: Read the reviews before buying. They are really mixed.
