  • I purchased this carburetor last winter for a little project to give me something to do why recovering from surgery, as I really enjoy overhauling carburetors. For some reason I never got to it. I've been cleaning up the garage a little, and wanted it out of my way, so I finally overhauled it.
It's a GM Rochester 2-Jet, an ultra common carburetor used on Chevrolet V8's. This 2-Jet even has the Chevrolet bowtie with "Bay City" in the bowtie. I have overhauled hundreds of these old 2-Jets.... I have never seen one with the bowtie and Bay City in the bowtie. I'm wondering if this carburetor was made in Bay City for the Flint engine plant.
This is a long in-depth video on rebuilding one of these simple Rochester carburetors. If I get a lot of likes and views, I will rebuild other carburetors on video.... including four barrels and other brands like Holly, Autolite, Motorcraft and Carter to name a few.
I often see carburetors in estate sales. I'll start buying them to rebuild and sell, if there is interest in seeing that.
When I was working as a Marine Mechanic, I rebuilt thousands of carburetors, as marine engines used carburetors well into the early 2000's..... Plus all the carburetors I overhauled for old cars and friends carburetors for their cars. I also enjoy overhauling starters, alternators and generators and have done hundreds of them too over the years.
Here is my video on overhauling a Rochester 4-Jet, 4GC; • Rebuilding a Rochester...

Rebuilding Carburetors is a lost art. When I started in the automotive repair business in 1968 I learned how to rebuild carburetors. Some of the people I worked with didn't like to rebuild them. Tune up and Carb repair were something I specialized in. When I quit wrenching in 2000 and went into the management side of the business I was the only guy in the shop who knew how to rebuild them. By the way the owners manual for my 66 Chevy told you how to tap on the carburetor if the float was sticking.

Thank you for such a thorough review. After watching it a couple times (and referring to it a couple more for a gut check during reassembly), I rebuilt the 2GC for my marinized 250 L6. Very nice job!

About to rebuild a ‘84 Isuzu Trooper II carb. I replaced the accelerator pump because the boot was leaking, but now after getting it running it’s clear it needs a rebuild/cleaning. Runs/idles great once it’s warm, but does not want to start and idle cold at all.

It's hard to find good, in depth videos like this, and it is a gift when someone takes the time to make them. Thank you very much

Thank you Howard for another informative video. Don't know how many of those Rochester 2G carbs I have overhauled, but totally enjoyed watching you do it. Thanks again for showing us the lost art of a carb overhaul.

I live in Bay City , Mi. and once worked in the Chevy plant there - currently having my Rochester carb. rebuilt -- thanks for a great detailed video !! You rock !! I have a 1950 Chevy Sports coupe with a 1958 - 283 with 2 barrel ( from the numbers on the block ) came out of a 1958 Corvette !

Carb looks great. Apparently the carbs with Bay City on them were actually produced in the Chevrolet plant there, not by Rochester. That would explain the bowtie. They probably needed more carbs than Rochester could supply, sort of like in 1971 when Chrysler used Rochester 2Jets on some 318 engines instead of the usual Carter 2bbl.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s the Chilton book was my go to! I wish I had utube back then!

Watching you rebuild that carburetor made me realize why I enjoy your videos so much, you always do things the right way. It doesn’t matter if you’re painting or repairing a clock, you just apply logic and experience to do a pretty much perfect job.

Howard, you have been blessed with a lot of talent. Sadly your kind of talent will eventually dwindle away. I enjoyed the video.

👍 Great video Howard, it was interesting info for me since the most I’ve ever replaced was an accelerator pump on a ‘74 Buick 40 years ago.

Howard, what a good video. I really think these carburetors are underappreciated. As I rebuild my 1967 Tempest, I'm seriously thinking of putting my original 2jet back on the 326. Back in 1985 I drove my Tempest from Arizona back to Michigan and going across the Great Plains I was averaging 24 mpg. How can you beat that on an old V8. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration. I very much enjoy your work.

Nice work Howard. Week after next I have a carb like this coming in for rebuild. Looking forward to the job. I haven’t done a Rochester 2 barrel in forever so this is really helpful. I’ve done numerous Holley, 2100 Fords and Edlebrock but these have eluded me. There are very few guys round these parts still doing carbs. Cheers!

Wow, meticulous, raised the bar for me. Mines off of a rescued boat, 300 Buick engine. Thanks for the helpful vid.
