  • The dos and don'ts of a 4 stroke oil change as explored on this first attempt on a 2005 Yamaha F225. The engine had roughly 850 and had been serviced regularly but by a professional per regular service intervals.

I believe if you tilt the engine up before removing the oil filter, you'll have much less mess.

+Tony Stewart We considered this but thought it would drip all over the boat versus the engine. It does make sense to try to keep the filter upright to reduce spillage. Thanks for the advice

Question, why did you wait 850 hours before changing the oil? Yamaha recommends that it be changed every 100 hours or annually.

+Tony Stewart We did not wait 850 hrs to change the oil. This was our first attempt in changing the oil as the new owners. The engine had been serviced regularly for the first 750 hours and was due for service according to the marine survey at the time of purchase. Our efforts were to show what worked and what did not if you follow directions from the manual. Admittedly we would do a few things differently for sure on the next 100 hrs.
We also changed the lower unit oil and replaced several anodes but this was really easy and has been well documented on UA-cam. Not wanting to make a mistake we let a professional place the water pump impeller.
