How to add fluid and check your trim and tilt Yamaha Outboard system. If you are having problems with your trim and tilt working; either not going up or down, or low fluid and how to add it or seeing if the relay or switches are working, this video will help you out.
Will mostly work in solving Honda, Etec, Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu and all other trim and tilt systems. - Навчання та стиль
Great info here Captain. I appreciate the time and effort you have put into this clear and informative video. Thumbs up!
Just had my starter tilt trim motor rebuilt for 84$ at a starter shop marina wanted 1400$ dollars to do it ! great video !
You watch these and it gives you the confidence to do it yourself ! Thanks
THANK YOU for posting this video! The trim on my motor was really struggling on the upper end and was getting progressively worse. After iterating through several YT vids, I found yours. Adding fluid fixed the issue. Note that I am NOT a mechanic -- your vid gives a great overview! I ordered parts on Amazon and had my trim/tilt issue fixed in
Thank you so much! I have a 90hp Yamaha on a pontoon boat. That did it... with the screwdriver! Dropped it down with ease. I will later try the hydraulic fluid part. Super video!
THANK YOU! Just just saved me a trip to the shop, a wad of cash and being without my boat till "my turn" came around to get it worked on. Mine is working with just some added fluid and bleeding.
Great tutorial Captain. The soap dispenser idea is brilliant!
Now I know you can fill/replace the fluid in the 50hp. Mine is a 2014 but looks the same. Enjoy your new boat, looks great.
I appreciate your video. Good job Capt.
Well done Cap !!! Thank you so much for sharing. Tight lines.
Great video! Straight to the point!
Tanks for the many tips for Yamaha 50. I have an 1999 model.
👍 Jan
dude you just saved our lives in the middle of the lake on a hot busy day. thumbs up.
You filled it up in the middle of the lake?
Thank you Captain for taking the time to post this. Saved me a lot of money and downtime for my boat.
Thank you for watching!
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! Solid video!
Just watched this video, very plain and informative! Thanks Captain!
Very welcome
thanks for the video, very helpful.
Excellent tutorial and “common sense approach” they don’t make them like that anymore “thumbs up”
Thank you captain drew! Got stuck up! Added fluid and tapped! Worked!
Excellent!
Great show and very well explained thank you very much from Sydney Australia
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome explanations thanks guy
Worked like a charm.
Thanks for the info. I'm in Satellite Beach and just suffered the same thing with the same motor in the banana river. Hopefully it's just low fluid...
Great video, helped me solve my problem
Thanks Captain. Going to have to try that on mine's.
Thank for the helpful video
I had a second person hold the trim motor up while I added fluid. It didn’t take very long to fill it up and began working within minutes
Man! Thanks what a good video
Thanks for the detailed information, our brand new Yamaha has the trim stuck.
Glad it helped
Great help - thanks!
hi thanks its help more to me i want to ask if the green wire for the down can be also put on the negative terminal of the battery..thanks
Flipping the trim wires on the relays is great when you only have one side not working. I like using a test light and checking the outputs on the relays, because it also rules out the switch being the culprit. My motor has both the throttle control trim switch, plus one on the side of the engine. To rule out both switches form the problem solving, I use a test light and check the relay outputs to see if the relay is putting out power. If you hear the click on the relay and the test light does not light up, you more than likely just found your problem, bad relays.
For filling the trim pump, I found that the same filler kit for the seastar hydraulic steering systems have a great little hose and fluid bottle adapter for topping off a trim pump.
Thanks for the hand soap container tip, not a bad idea. I had used an old rain-x container with the flip top nozzle for filling as well.
So I just put in a new relay and the motor will go down but not up. If I flip the wires then it will go up! So the relay is good. When the motor is up is slowly comes down. Could there me a fail safe button causing my relay to not go up?
Great video
Great job, thank you
Great Video! Thank you very much!
Glad you liked it!
You are amazing thanks
Drew, if the relay is bad it won’t work period. So if the motor works but is struggling it’s the pump. Also, just put the trailer on ramps and lower the front so it’s level. It needs to be level to fill correctly. Just my suggestions. Glad you got it fixed though! Good luck
Adam Hartless hey I have a Evinrude xp 150 and my tilt won’t work not even make a sound so I manually lift the motor and I’m able to let it down if I put the green wire to a battery and ground the blue ..... any idea why it’s not working when I use the switch it has 2 switches one at the back of the boat and one on the throttle handle neither one works
@@redboyize like relay or fuses
Thank you!
Thank you for the video.
Thx
My trim ran up for a few seconds than stopped. Won't move at all. You are saying the fluid is the issue for my problem? Is there a sensor that tells the trim motor not to run if fluid is low?
Thank You! This saved my bacon:) !!!!
Question. I have just replaced by tilt motor on my Yamaha 40. Motor runs great, but nothing happens. I have fluid. I opened the hydraulic relief, lowered drive, and closed the relief. I checked the small coupler between the motor and the pump, I guess that could have come off.
Anything else to try?
You need to have your transom perpendicular to the ground as best you can, lower your jack down as far as possible helps when adding fluid, the guy who replaced the motor you have to make sure you got the motor shaft connected back to the pump shaft, the motor is humming because the motor shaft is in a bind with the pump shaft or it's free to turn and running but not turning the pump shaft.
Fantastic! I tried this the first time, but didn’t do a good job of getting trapped air out. Knocking that cylinder a little and using the soap bottle with the hose from an old brake bleeding kit seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip!
I knocked mine and the magnet inside came loose and started knocking back and fourth.
Captain, do you know any good places to buy these replacement assy's?
Awesome. Thanks Cap.
Will any type of hydraulic fluid work or is there a certain kind recommended? Thx
Thanks well explained
You're welcome
Both of mine started acting up on my 2013 dual 200's. All I get is a clicking noise out of both solenoids. Will try this when I get home.
Let us know if you got it fixed and what was the issues.
Great video! Quick question. What goes out in an electric-drive hydraulic motor that leaks fluid, or has not fluid in it? Does the motor just burn out, or is does something happen to the cylinder?
my motor went out. i could tap the motor and it would kick in for a second or two. when i took the old motor off, some of the trim fluid that was under the motor came out. i replaced the motor and topped off the fluid and now i am all good.
Just saved my life
Thank You ,Thank You
Hey, just noted. If you positive the blue wire to a battery, and hope to get ground through the motor and bracket assembly it did not work in my test. I had to ground the green wire directly. Then to reverse polarity, to push the motor down, I went Green to positive, and Blue to negative.
I could not test my 2 wire new trim motor by grounding the trim motor to the engine block or directly to the battery. I had to do
what you described. If you have a two wire trim motor and you want to test it power the blue and green leads.
Nice job, thanks. So, my Yamaha 200 was on the trailer all winter, and when I took it out of the water months ago, the tilt was fine. But now, I hear the motor whining, but the motor won't move, and it's in the up position for trailering. Same thing, correct? Just try adding the fluid? Perhaps it's an obvious question/answer, but I want to check because I'm very non mechanical and the obvious sometimes isn't so obvious to me.
You can try to add fluid.
I have a tilt motor that is stuck in the up position. Constantly runs unless I press the downward button or turn the battery off . But it will not go down. Any ideas?
Mine clicks but doesn’t move. Gonna try this tmrw and see what happens
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
hello dirty switch by throttle can be opened and cleaned very easy job and low voltage can be a problem , I have lowrence and have a voltage display and low voltage alarm on my depth finder ,, good video .. I had my engine come out of water because switch got saltwater in it and I had to unplug it and use the motor trim to lower the engine
+boashna I use corrosion block on the switches. It helps prevent this.
Mine is stuck and won’t go up and I’m afraid to drive it to get it fixed what do I do
Yup! Always lightly strike the side of your electrical motors to make sure you don't crack those large magnets on the inside to make spots of random polarity or create permanent contact with the inner coil! 👍 guy knows his DC motors lmao
Great point!
Is that a SHO? Mine doesn't have an 18mm nut... I have a cap that unscrews (250 sho). I was told to raise it all the way up.... fill it.... then put the cap back on. Didn't fix my issue and mine is doing the same thing as yours. Sounds like it get very weak when almost max up.... or almost max down. Help!
No mine is the 115 LB
How do you replace the piston seal on this single piston PTT assembly, I was able to remove the cover nut (the one with the 4 holes that hold the seal) But I can not remove the piston or disassemble the interior of unit.
+Justin Joseph By calling your Yamaha Mechanic. That is beyond my scope of doing things. Too much involved there that needs to be precise.
The trim motor will lift my 2014 fx250 Yamaha motor about 15% degrees , motor still will run but not lift engine any higher.we lifted the engine manually and set the pin to hold it up in order to add fluid hoping that was the issue. After unscrewing the #18 nut, fluid started leaking out so it’s apparently full of fluid?I could lover the motor now if I physically lifted the engine enough to disengage the pin, so the motor appears to be working so what now?
Wesley
Sounds like the pump itself has gone bad.
could you hear air in the system when it was low? My yamaha trim just started doing this.
No. Mine I drained, realized it was no longer working. Then replaced it. The seals may be leaking in yours. They do sell rebuild kits. Sometimes cheaper and better to just replace it.
Trim gauge not working on my boat.
No, no, no! That’s a great way to crush your hand when the engine comes down. If you blow a seal, you’ll crush your hand. At the very least you need to block the drive up so if you lose your fluid or the relay fuses (Burned contacts) it can’t continue down to crush your hand.
Putting your hand in that position is stupid and dangerous.
Where do you hook up your ground wire to??? Some where on the engine and the other end hooks up positive side of battery?
black ground on battery to bolt on engine, red on positive battery to green or blue on trim motor
I can't get my trim tab up/down dash instrument gauge to indicate. Changed gauge and I'm getting voltage but but no signal coming from engine. Any ideas what the problem?
Signal coming from pink wire? I thing it indicates with ohms (resistance) doesnt it?
Do you happen to remember the fluid capacity in this unit? Couldn't find the info in my manual.
Why not use a Lower Unit refill pump - goes directly into the bottle of trim/tilt fluid and has a nice flex tube.
cuz there's no air vent
The screw that's on the side of the trim and tilt that u can turn and manually pull up ur motor! Does that screw need to be tighten back up, before adding trim and tilt fluid?
I am not sure, see if someone else can answer this
Hi my one will not go down what you think might be thanks
Hard to say without more details.
I am having the same issue on my Evinude 93 engine it doesn't wanna go up or down I added fluid to my Trim & Tilt and still won't go up or down.
Juan Dtrinidad I’m having the same problem did you find out the problem, mine won’t even make a sound no noise at all
Never knew that little screw was on the side of the motor to lower it. Had I known, it would have saved me a ton of time on the water. Can't get home with the motor up. Thanks for the info.
Captain C, my current position it all the way down and won’t tilt forward. Shows continuity on blue and green when switch is tried and getting 12.4 ( motor off )
Relay replaced but still clicks. Could it be as simple as fluid ?
Also motor spins when I dismantled it off the mount
Does not sound like fluid. try the fluid and see what happens.
My motor is in the down position and I can not get it go up. I can hear it whining like it wants to move. You it just need trim oil
I just replaced the trim motor on my 150hp Yamaha. To do that I removed the hydrolic piston pin to tilt out the assembly to access the rear bolt. the motor humms but the piston won't go up or down now. What gives.
What was your diagnoses ? Same problem here with 150
Sounds like it needs fluid
The motor switch works on my boat but the gear shift and bow switches don’t work. Any idea what could be going on?
Do you mean the switch on your engine itself works? But the throttle one does not?
Yes. The motor switch works but not the gear shift or the bow switch
So hook the blue wire to positive, then ground which wire ? Green or a different one ?
Not sure about that one. Maybe someone will chime in. I will say that the blue usually means up(sky) and green usually means down(grass)
To go up run the blue cable to posits on battery but first add a second new wire too the negative on battery then connect that to the frame of the engine as a ground.
I got a 1984 115 hp evinrude trim powers up fine then slowly goes down like you let off a hydraulic jack is it a seal or something else
Could be the bushings. Is it the original trim motor?
Drew Cavanaugh yeah as far as I know I bought it in April then that pandemic hit Got a good deal because it was overheating on one side I put water pump and thermostats on it boat and motor 700 clean title on both trailer an boat
My problem is the hydraulic lines the old ones are dry rote and leaking.
Replace them.
Take the blue wire, And ground out the green wire on the - of the battery.
Its the direction of the current that makes the motor go left or right.
Engine goes down:
BLUE -
GREEN +
Engine goes up
Green +
Blue -
you got the same thing for both..that can't be right
Will this fix leak down, mine slowly goes down?
No. If it is leaking most likely needs seals or to be replaced.
If you cannot see evidence of oil leaking ,maybe the down screw is not tight and allowing it to leak down internally.
Brushes stuck NOT bushings!
just park your boat on an incline bow down?
Is this 80hp 4 stroke
50 hp
How do you flush out the old fluid? Siphon??
Yes or drain plug.
Drew Cavanaugh the Fluid in my trim is grey I don’t know what if it’s Yamaha hydraulic/power steering or DEX 2. Service manual calls for dex 2. I want to do a fluid exchange but I’m worried about using dex 2 and having a little bit of the power steering or whatever it is that is in there now. What do you think?
Just cal Yamaha Dealer and ask them. I am not sure.
@@cyrusdavirus007 i took a snap shot of a document but cant find it now on my phone but i think i remember thats all that fluid is (Dex 2) half price at autozone or double for the yamaha labelled bottle
Thanks for the video.. ez-pz
Did you ever find where fluid leaked out from? There should be evidence of a leak somewhere don't you think? Is changing fluid periodically a recommended maintanace?
+Stuart Kidder I do not think it was leaking, or much. Over the years just wear and tear causes so small of a leak that eventually you need to replace the fluid. If your motor is working and you have no issues with up or down or both, then you are fine.
@@Cavanaugh68 Normally its a bad seal or seals that need to be replaced due to they are dry rotted.
😊😊🎉😊😊😢
Why not name every city and state ? In your introduction?
I can do that. Thanks for the suggestion...
Because where I guide at is east of Orlando near Cocoa Daytona and New Smyrna Beach. The Body of water that covers this 60 mile stretch is called the Mosquito Lagoon. I know the area but not every else does, so for a tourist you want to tell them where you are located near Disney. every one on earth knows Disney. From Orlando it is about 45 minutes to Daytona, Cocoa or New Smyrna. We as guides daily use each of these ramps in each of this cities. So some days I launch in Cocoa, the next day I may be fishing in Daytona. So it varies.
