I just take photos for fun and I post the ones that aren’t awful. I don’t care about making masterpieces, I only care about having fun with it.

Thank you. I’m 51 & this is has been a problem my entire life. I didn’t even realize I was stunting myself until I went to art school in my mid 20’s & a couple professors called out my protectionism. It’s easier at times than others to overcome it. It all depends on where my mental state is. Be kind with yourself.

Watching your videos has given me a new outlook. I am a beginner photographer and realise that you have to enjoy taking pictures first and foremost to hone your skills. The great photos will come and learning by taking bad pictures is all part of the process.

Great point here! I suffer from perfectionism all the time. To your point, the last photos with the snow streaks adds an element you could only get at that moment in time, and that is what a photo is… a moment in time, never to be seen just like that ever again. Thanks for the reminder… And as alway, keep snapping…

I swear you read my mind in many of your videos! Actually, I suffer from both perfectionism and procrastination. As beautiful as winter landscapes are, I'm not a big fan of the accompanying cold, so I often tell myself that I'll wait for the weather to warm up a bit. Of course, when it does, the snow melts! What? No snow? I'll wait for better conditions.... And the cycle continues. 🙄 The great thing about your videos is that they almost always make me aware of my own failings and act as a catalyst to improve. Keep up the awesome work! Cheers!

This is the mindset I’m trying my daughter into, she is currently doing a 2 year college course in photography. However most of the “projects” they are getting the students to do are emulating projects from long standing photographers, or editing photos, there is by all accounts nothing to do with exploring their own styles. And when the students are marked on their work it’s also then compared to original artist (which I think is unfair, it would be like comparing non driving son on a pedal go kart to the likes of Lewis Hamilton).

Paralysis by analysis, and sometimes "good enough", is good enough!
The picture of the bridge with the snow streaks was very nice!

Spot on advice! Bad photos and projects are inevitable, but continuing your craft will help you learn and give you some great results 👍

Great advice and I'll say again - not only is your advice clear, concise and spot on, but your photos just keep getting better and better!

I absolutely love your philosophical approach to photography that you present to us here. While learning about technical aspects is very important, I believe that what we can actually benefit from much more and what will help us truly thrive as photographers, are things like this. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Definitely one of my favourite photography channels! 🙏

I am really be inspired by you using current equipment to do photography business. I cancelled my plan to upgrade my camera and lens since I don’t think I need until I can take some good pictures like you.

Thank you for encouraging beginners to not get frustrated with your work when it doesn’t come out right. Except the bad days and it will become good days. I’m shook how photography and training for a marathon are very similar. Both of them you have to work hard at it

Another great video and advice! Photography is about the only thing I’ve taken up that I stick with . I’m never going to be a ‘great’ photographer and earn money from it I simply enjoy the process of photography. Just getting out with a camera or some new gear is great for me. I take so many photos when I’m out that I’m bound to get a few decent ones worth keeping. That’s my theory anyway 🤣 Keep up your great work 👍

I have to say of all the videos I've watched over the last 5 years this one sums me up to perfection. Procrastination and needing the perfect shot makes me wonder if you are a mind reader?! The shot you mentioned of the bridge in the snow was all the better for the snow streaks.

I find I can also do a huge amount in post production that often makes those err.umm shots worthwhile - at least to slap on an Insta story for 24 hours

Wonderful information about perfection as it pertains to photography. I have taken many images that I did not think I would be happy with, but after getting them in Lightroom and working with them, I was glad that I took the time to capture them.
Keep up the good work with your videos Joshua. They are great and very inspiring! 👍📷
